Pay It Forward 2013

UPDATE:

I've received a number of replies for everything except the two "project" items. I'll be letting the winners know in the next day or so and gathering shipping information. If anyone is still interested in the Rapidograph or the Sheaffer pencil, let me know. I'm not making any promises, but I think the Rapidograph might actually function if cleaned out with the ink solvent they make for the ink these pens use. The Sheaffer, in my opinion, is just a parts pen if you're a Sheaffer Snorkel collector who needs to upgrade a barrel or cap. Again, let me know if interested, but I understand if no takers.

Thank you to all who have responded. If anyone out there has about 25 extra Esterbrooks lying around, I can give you the names of people who would like one.....

Dear PIF folks:

Here is another small offering of items that I’m hoping might find a good home where they can be used (It’s not that this isn’t a good home, it’s just that these items aren’t getting any use). Here’s what I’ve got:

A no-name fountain pen, Fine nib marked “Iridium Point Germany”, but I think it’s of Chinese Manufacture. Uses International cartridges (one included). The cap and barrel are brushed stainless with gold clip & trim. I think this pen was wedding guest favor, as the cap is imprinted “Dana and Lorraine, 10/20/96”. The pen looks to be unused, although I did dip it to try it out. It would be a nice starter pen for someone new to fountain pens.

Two mechanical pencils: An Autopoint “Twinpoint” two-sided mechanical pencil. This pencil was made by the Autopoint Company in Chicago years ago; used, but in good working condition. The pencil has the name of a company imprinted on the barrel (very common with Autopoints) and uses 1.1mm lead. The second item is a Bankers mechanical pencil. The pencil is about 5” long, narrow (I would say about the diameter of a Cross Century pen/pencil) and uses .9mm lead. The cap and barrel are a ribbed chrome pattern. Used, but in good working condition.

An Esterbrook SJ fountain pen, grey in color with a 2668 steel nib. The SJ is the shorter model within the Esterbrook J series of pens, measuring 4 ¾ inches capped and just under 6 inches posted. This pen has a new sac installed and is ready to use.

Two “project” items: one is a Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph pen and the other is a Sheaffer pencil from the TM/Snorkel era. Neither is currently working, but for the money( $0), it might be worth seeing if you can get them to work.

To keep my mailing costs within reason, I can only ship to CONUS. I recognize these are somewhat “modest” items compared to some of the other items that have gone through PIF, but I would hope that they go to members who could actually use them. Send me a PM if you are interested.

OK, maybe a little harsh, am changing the restrictions on this one -

- must be active on FPN - at least a few posts and no date limit.

- posting of writing samples no longer a requirement, but if you can, please do, I'd really like to see them,

- re-PIFing no longer a requirement, just hoped for.

Offering up a couple of pens today to someone who is interested in those slightly different writing experiences.

- 2 Indian Eyedroppers -

- a red Usha Fosty Micro with an Arabic Italic nib,

- a navy blue Charter "997" reground to a right oblique by US nibmeister Vivek Narayanan

(special thanks to Maja for gifting these at Christmas)

Also included with the 2 pens will be a pipette for filling and 2 ink samples to fill them with - 5ml each of FPN inks Van Gogh Starry Night Blue and Dumas Tulipe Noir.

As my first 2 PIFs (last year) went to 2 very new FPNers and were consequently never heard from again..... I'd like these to go to someone with a little time in

- an FPN member for at least 6 month, with at least 10 posts,

- have the ability to post writing samples once you've received and inked them, (show us your stuff!)

- follow this PIF up with one of your own.

I'll leave this up for :hmm1: lets say, 5 days. I will random.org the entries on Wednesday morning and announce the winner!

PMs preferred.

Good luck to everyone!!! :P

ps - to clarify, both pens and inks are going to one winner - package deal.

Just to clarify: my PIF will only have one winner, and that person will receive all three of the pens pictured. The hope is that person will get some experience of variation between three very similar pens. Including a loupe should help the winner to investigate the differences between the nibs more easily.

You must be relatively new to FPN, objectively measured as having 100 posts or less. To enter, you must currently live in the USA (to keep my shipping cost low) and tell me about a trip that took you the furthest from home you have ever been. It can be as succinct or as detailed as you like, just as long as you meet both qualifications. You do not have to be a US citizen, just have a mailing address here. Fifteen people have entered so far. The winner will receive all three Hero pens, a loupe, and a sample of Diamine ink.

My reasons for all of this are: (1) to reward someone for getting out of their comfort zone and going on a journey, (2) to hear some travel tales because it's been a long time since I got to use my passport, (3) to help out someone who is trying to learn about fountain pens, and (4) to give a nod to Goulet Pens for making me a happy customer and for all the free resources they have made available. I can't tell you how much time I've spent watching Brian and Rachel review pens and inks, not to mention all the precise information they provide to ease the experience of buying blindly over the internet, so it's time to pay it forward.

Thank you to everyone who has entered so far. I am currently renewing my passport to hopefully travel abroad this summer, and it's energizing to read about the places you've been.

If you have not yet entered, and you qualify, see the link in my signature for details and pictures.

Happy writing!

This is The Hill Pen. I have had it since 1992 and it is not getting the love it deserves from me. It is matt black with a bling stone in the cap. It is a cartridge pen taking standard international cartridges. You could put a converter in. The cap posts with a definite click, locking it to the back of the barrel.

This is open to anyone, anywhere. PM me if you would like this pen and I will assign a number to each applicant and use a random number generator to select the recipient in one week on 2nd March.

Here's another PIF for newer FPN members.

Three Hero 616 pens (two standard, one jumbo/doctor). They were inked a couple times, and the nibs have been smoothed. I have already flushed them, so they will arrive empty. You will need bottled ink. If you don't already have a bottle of ink, I recommend buying from GouletPens.com (not affiliated, just a big fan and satisfied customer).

Here is my write-up of Shaughn's P25:

And chiaroscuro's Pilot Petit1:

http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt9/DoA-Neo/Pilot-Petit1.jpg

These have been delayed due to school, work, and the three publications I write/edit for. I will be doing this at some point for Renfield's Baoer 8 Horses and tomgartin's Hero 616s, both of which I am super excited to receive!

Edit: On a side note, what image uploading service should I use? I don't have much more space on my personal wiki. Also, is there an optimal resolution for the FPN? This is the first time I have uploaded pictures here, and it didn't let me link from postimage, which is my usual go-to.

It is better to do it via the "upload" tab at the top of the page. It is at the end of the line "Forums, Classifieds, etc, etc"

Alc, I can't use the upload on the top bar as I'm not a gold member yet. Otherwise, that seems like a great feature! Sorry for getting us off topic; I'll figure something out, you all go about your PIF business.

Tgipiff. Thank goodness it's pay it forward friday.

I have three sets...so there can be three winners

Each set is a notebook (size a5 64pg) and a disposable fountain pen.

The notebooks have a plastic cover and a retro flower design. (They are from dasios...)

There are three pens one black varsity, a blue varsity, and a black.

Due to shipping costs....conus only.

And I wanna read your best, clean-ish, joke.....top three win...extra points if I can see it in your handwriting. (If the joke is from your kid please let me know so I can keep that in mind durning judging.

I am new to the world of fountain pens...and I have just discovered that my handwriting may needs to be kicked up a notch and I need a few ideas of fonts people are really writing in.

Bumpping ...

The bic and the notebook it is attached to are claimed....but there are still two of them. This really is a lurker special,...a joke (singular) is the entry fee although more are ok too. Make an account and send me a pm. I know there are lurkers...only six posts ago I was one of them.

Varsity pens can be refilled (apparently you pull on the nib..and drop more in...thus called an eyedropper conversion I believe)

Wiser...members with more experience...your welcome to put your name in the hat too.

How to enter: I'm going to try something a bit more fun this time. I'm a photographer (and general art lover) and would love to know your favorite photographer. PM me with their name (feel free to add why if you would like to). If someone names one of my top 5 favorite photographers, they will win the package. If more than one person picks one of my top 5 I will use random.org to draw between them. If nobody picks any of them I will use random.org to choose between everyone who entered. I will draw Monday (the 25th) afternoon.

What's in it?

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8377/8492198865_03b354b69e.jpg

1 - One Clairefontaine 1951 notebook. Color will be whatever I have on hand at the time, probably black.

2 - One Pilot 78G Broad stub. You can choose the body color, I have have black, red and green on hand.

3 - Write Now, the Getty-Dubay Program for Handwriting Success - This is a great book on italic handwriting, slightly used but still in good condition.

4 - 3 ink samples from my (small) collection. I'll send you a list you can choose from, or I'll surprise you if you'd like!

That's it! PM away!

Drawing time!

Top 5

Laura Letinsky

The Parkeharrisons

James Nachtwey

Edward Burtynsky

William Eggleston

Nobody picked any of my top ten, but a few mentioned Cartier-Bresson or Weston who are very close to my to ten, so I gave them an extra number in the drawing. And the winner is...
