Thanks! I always enjoy making video posts. It lets you get more personal with your replies, so when someone needs pen help, I would make a video instead of posting words as well.

That was such a cool way of showing your pen by video. You make it sound like it is no big deal but your generosity is appreciated. I continue being amazes at people's generosity here. What a great community.

You find the greatest people in the FPN community!

In my life, I've got some close friends that are MUCH more generous than me. For example, that pen was red and I gave it away to someone who wanted it more than me, and a few hours after shipping it, a friend of mine gave me a free Vanishing Point from his collection with three types of nibs. It is also red. Talk about karma huh?

I've known him for 10+ years, and we're REALLY close. He's given me thousands (and I mean thousands) of dollars worth of FP's in the last two months because of it :P

But to answer your question, medical school. Or a hospital.

Alright, I'd like to pass on this small set of things to a student, I know it's not much, but being a student myself it is all I can spare. Apologies for the bad photo!

The fun stuff:

There is a red (not pink, like it looks in the photo!) Lamy Safari, medium nib, that comes with a blue cart and a plastic pouch, eight extra Lamy Blue carts (I found more after I took the pic), a Clairefontaine 1951 A6 notebook with a black cover, and a Dixon Ticonderoga HB pencil. All of it is new, but the Lamy packaging is a bit beat up.

The not so fun stuff:

I'm only able to post this within the UK, and please only enter if you have never had a Safari or if you have not got a fountain pen, and you are in education (anything from primary school to university). You can enter on behalf of someone else who meets these criteria, as long as you personally don't have the means to purchase these for that someone else.

To put your name in for these, please click on my profile and click "send me an email" - its easier for me to keep track of what's what that way. Don't forget to mention your FPN username, and I'd also like it if you could tell me what pen you use for your everyday writing at school or wherever.

And good luck!

ETA: I'll be leaving this open until midnight GMT on the 4th of February, and picking the winner on the 5th.

Okay, after packing the stuff into, well, a package, I weighed it and checked international postage costs. Long story short, they are much cheaper than I had thought for something this bulky and so I'm opening this up worldwide if anyone else would like to email me.

-not really now not any more-

Thanks for posting this info. As one of those potential international recipients, I'm glad - PIFs are often restricted because of the perceived high costs of international postage, while in reality, and for pens, those costs are really only marginally higher than national postage in for instance the USA.

It becomes much different of course when journals are involved... the weight of paper is really a problem there...

NOTICE: (hmmm sounded rather official lol)

I will stop receiving applicants for the MB 149 PIF at 7pm tonight. All applicants will have a number assigned based on where their name is on my list. I will total up all applicants and enter the total number of applicants into the Random dot org generator which will give me a winner. I will announce the winner Friday morning. Best of Luck to all of you who have applied. Thank You.

2 Rotring Core Fountain Pens - gone

Neil Martinsen-Burrell has started a Google Plus community for fountain pen addicts. I don't think it is meant to compete with FPN but rather be something for all the Google Plus users. I tried to bootstrap FPN's PiF idea over there to get things rolling for the fountain pen newbies on Plus. It has been a couple of weeks with no takers so I'm posting the link to a blog page with my pens here. The details and requirements are in the blog post so have a look. I've got some goodies that I'll probably throw into the package prior to sealing it up just to sweeten the deal.

----------------------------

These pens have been claimed.

I've always thought the contoured grip section on the Rotring Core make it an ideal student pen. I've been contacted by two people looking for fountain pens to provide for students. One is bound for Alberta and the other is off to Indiana. Thanks FPN for the opportunity to give.

Roger! Just found a box to ship it in. Would be able to send it out on Saturday if the winner's able to pass me his/her add by Saturday morning (CET!). Otherwise, Monday it shall be.

The MB 149's in good shape! I just tried dismantling it that day to REALLY clean it, and managed to remove the nib section. There was so much ink deposited there! Managed to clean that out, but a little of the pink sealant is poking out. Don't think it'll matter much though.

Now, I need to get some shut eye before my Programming test tomorrow afternoon. Oh how I hate exam periods. :gaah:

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

@Astronymus I could use cornstarch... Or i could distill it and make it very concentrated.

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27
I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I'm looking to repair some cheap pens that are starving for ink yet filled, and eventually get new nibs; and development of repair skills (an even longer learning curve than my art studies - lol). I haven't been here for ages... do I take it that private sales are no longer allowed? Also used to be a great place to sell and buy some great pens

      Lol…
    • JungleJim 1 Sept 1:55
Perhaps it's like saying Beetlejuice 3 times to get that person to appear, though with @Sailor Kenshin you only have to say it twice?

I have no ties or relationship. Just a very happy customer. He is a very experienced Montblanc expert.

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.
    • Seney724 26 Aug 18:16

Hello, could someone recommend a reliable venue: on line or brick and mortar in Fairfax, VA or Long Island, NY to purchase the soft parts and a converter to restore my dad's Sheaffer Legacy? please. Thanks a mill.

Back to FPN after 14 years. First thing I noticed is that I could not see a FS forum. What has changed? 🤔

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

I have a Conway Stewart Trafalgar set. It was previously owned by actor Russell Crowe and includes a letter from him. Can anyone help me with assessing its value?
