I learned a new word today: Bodice-ripper.

I would be interested to read your tale.

Ruth and I used to know a guy that had his wife make his tyes. The guy wore one made of urban camo when he didn't want to be noticed; of course he was well over 6 ft tall and over 300 lbs with a big beard so hiding behind a tye didn't work.

Tell me, does that combo have an eraser?

Honestly - really - including the pencil part - I think that is a gorgeous pen......

From reading the original post, I had some thought: But why the title for this thread???

Though at first I thought that end was meant as a phone dialler (granddads story for the young'uns: in the old days telephones had a revolving disk with holes in it. A hole for each cypher. You had to turn that disk and the telephone would know which cypher you chose. For people who were a lot on the phone you had some pens with a metal end to use instead of your fingers, to prevent sore fingers- end of story)

It's close, but just plain wrong.

If I could just get the red out...maybe a bath in Visine.

Also makes me wonder how that red cap lip was colored.

Some of us young'uns remember rotary phones, that's the only type of phone that worked at my grandmother's house for years... until the phone companies finally started installing equipment out in rural Kansas that would support tone dialing.

We had a rotary phone....

Don't take the red out! If it bugs you that much, I have a Yellow Arnold combo (toothpick size) and a Wearever combo in a orangeish-red color... I'll send them both... :vbg:

I think that this is maybe the ugliest (and also maybe strangest) genuine fountain pen I have seen. It is an eye-dropper filler that I reviewed a while back, is almost impossible to hold in a writing position, and is a terrible writer - but I just had to get it when I saw it because it was so bizarre. It is called the Kyukyodo Mascot. For those who are truly masochistic, the review is here http://www.fountainp...yukyodo-mascot/

Now this is courage! Wow, by far the most beautiful/ugly (strike through what's relevant for you) pens here on FPN! I hope that this thread keeps on going for a loooooong time. Thanks for sharing.

Blotto I must thank you! I found this pen at an antique store and had to buy it. Does it look familiar? (just without the cap) I have been trying to identify it for nearly a year. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! I think its a bit nicer in black.

Much better in black, but as it stands difficult to identify the maker.

These combo instruments came into vogue in the 1930's. The more expensive models, like yours and the ugly

New Banker went through the trouble of offering an eraser, while cheaper pens like these from the

Southern Pen Co. did not.

Some were quite spiffy, like this GP Overlay from Eclipse.

There is at least one good thread I can recall on these pens that may offer you more insight. Try a search for Combos.

Enjoyable conversation, but between hula girls, rotary phones and combos we're getting off topic.

Where are the Uglys? (And no, the Southerns don't qualify. They're only homely. )

I have loved the Titanic dearly and have studied it extensively, which is why I was disgusted by this pen when I saw it (Both emotionally and visually). The good old ship deserves better. And Titanic DNA... really? Let all those poor souls rest....I'd be too tempted to try an use it for plumbing or something

All of the Romain Jerome stuff I could never see myself ever liking.

I think i'll take the plumbing pipes instead...

Sorry, I shouldn't be so harsh, but someone had to say it

Blotto I actually find that pen quite lovely. Unless it is some kind of very weird lighting, I can see why the red was chosen from an artist's standpoint. Throughout the barrel and cap there is a reddish streak and so the red band and knob were to highlight the least prominent of the colours present in the material. Now I've a really great solution for you - if you truly find that pen ugly - you're more then welcome to send it my way.

Yeah, yeah, I know, not a chance. :ltcapd:

Never saw him with that one, but back when I worked at JoAnn Fabrics years ago, I *did* try real hard to sell him some fabric that looked like red and white picnic tablecloth with big (3" long) black ants on it.... He said he needed to wear a tie at work (he worked the city as an engineer) but saw no reason for it not to be stupid fabric. Sadly, he declined on that fabric on the grounds that "the print was too big", even though it was definitely along the lines of what he was going for.

I'm sure the pattern could have been laid out on the fabric such that there was only one ant showing -- but in the widest part of the tie....

Aww, I don't think it's that ugly. I have a way worse pen than that.sick.gif

I'd rather spend my money on pens instead of shoes and handbags.

Wasn't there an Ebay auction a while back for a beat up piece of copper tubing with a bic refill shoved into it?

IIRC it was beaten with an ugly stick and called art....
