What Happened To Life Time Warranty-?

4 years ago I was given a STARWALKER BLACK MYSTERY FINELINER pen for being the best man at a wedding, a very nice and generous gift.

I have enjoyed the pen but now the screw on cap skips the treads and doesn't tighten correctly. I took it into my Mont Blanc dealer and was surprised that the pen didn't have a life time warrantee. I thought all Mont Blanc's had this type of warrantee. When did this change?

I was shocked to find out they wanted $165 to repair the cap when I truly feel it's a defect in design rather than damage from neglect.

I am wondering when Mont Blanc changed their warrantee policy.

Thank you

Jeremy

Why is this a $165-repair job?

I am guessing they just replace the cap and barrel these days, rather than handing it to a tech to actually repair the existing parts.

YMMV

Hi Jeremy,

Are you sure it's truly the cap that's the problem? If you're sure about this, you can try looking at eBay to find a replacement cap - do a search for "Montblanc parts" and you might find a replacement cap for a lot less. (Of course, watch out for fakes, but I think this is usually more of a problem with whole pens...)

I cannot see how this is a warranty issue, lifetime or not. After four years of twisting the cap on and off the barrel, you've worn the threads to the point they no longer hold. It would have been different if the threads did not hold when the pen was given to you.

$185 does seem steep. It depends upon which parts will be replaced: barrel, cap or both.

I usually view that the pen is guaranteed to be in perfect condition upon initial delivery.

Wear and tear, and my foolish behaviour is not MB's problem.

  • 3 weeks later...

the lifetime warranty was applicable when MB was owned by Dunhill and this was in the 70's-early 80's

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Krone still has lifetime warranties. I happen to like their bling and their nibs are excellent, but don't come in as many sizes as my MBs. I'm getting $175-185 estimates for my repairs as well. My suspicion is they're charging us more for not having boutiques handy.

Does anyone have a link to, or any information on the "certain conditions" ? I am particularly interested in what they have to say about the use of non-Mont Blanc brands of inks

that is partly subject to the law of the country you live in and partly MB policy.

for example: nib exchange within six weeks and in new condition. Bought at an authorized dealer or not. Manufacturing faults within two years (but over her it's you who has to prove after 6 months that it was a manufacturing fault and not your own fault). As far as I know there's nothing special about inks (as long as you care that it's really made for fountain pens).

General rule for all the stories we hear and read over here: it's very different for many people, depending on the person you have been contacting.

btw: a lifetime warranty is forbidden by German law. If MB wishes to do so, they can offer it elsewhere, but I would be very surprised... If there were a lifetime warranty over here such strict rules would apply that it would effectively be ineffective.

I can understand that there is no lifetime warranty, and as far as I knew there wasn't.

I'm a bit mystified why the replacement of cap or barrel wouldn't cost the first level service of $80, and if I was in this position I would concentrate my efforts on asking that question rather than querying a lifetime warranty that doesn't exist

That's interesting, why do they ban lifetime warranties?

Sometimes you're better off just buying another pen for parts

The pen I write with, is the pen I use to sign my name.

Is there a warranty for Graf von Faber-Castell items?

Yes, there is a lifetime warranty. If there is a problem, which falls under the warranty, the instrument will be repaired at no charge. If the item is no longer available and in need of replacement, a comparable replacement will be offered in its place. (See warranty information).

From the GvFC website Q&A.

In civil law the statute of limitations (prescription) is set to 30 years (after that you cannot start any juridicial trial / proceedings / ... anymore - it's similar with crimes).

So: a lifetime warranty gives you a promise, but no one needs to keep that promise. Even if you come after 35 years and tell "I've got a lifetime warranty" the company can send you off and you have no legal way of enforcing your warranty (for which you have paid money). Thus - to prevent fraudulous representations - there's no lifetime warranty.

The right to advertise with lifetime warranty has gradually been granted by courts in the last few years. Still - the statute of limitations / prescription (plus several other restrictions) are still in place, so a lifetime warranty is more or less useless.

Edit: I'm not so sure about the correct legal terms in English... I hope you understand anyway.

Yes, that's what I have written above: It can be offered elsewhere, but I'm pretty sure you won't find that on the German page.

It would be interesting to know how long you are legally entitled to enforce your warranty over there (see post above).
