Learn To Write Arabic

thanks sir

now i know

angle of qalam is changed while writing a word in nastaliq?

Yes it is - and some strokes are written with only a partial width of the qalam while others are just drawn with the tip of it.

I don't know if you can now watch YouTube videos in Pakistan but if you can these videos by Muhammad Akmal are really good. I really like how he builds up the letters step by step. A more advanced calligraphic approach is presented by Naqsh School of Arts.

There are many more videos on Nastaliq on YouTube but they are mostly in Farsi - these two are in Urdu.

Regards,

Salman

That is step 1 in being hooked - just wait till a beautifully formed stroke flows from your pen and you will want that fix over and over again :-)

Whatever little I know of Arabic/Urdu Calligraphy, I learned on my own. It is not easy but doable if one is disciplined in approach and takes the time to study. In the beginning, study is more important than practice as it prevents one from developing bad habits. My studies and practice continues as I find time but it is an enjoyable journey and I love every minute of it.

We are lucky to live in a time when information is easily available. Most of the texts I found were in Arabic but with study, watching videos and practice, one can learn it on their own. Having a teacher speeds things up considerably.

Where in Pakistan are you located? I believe there are more than a few teachers in Lahore and Karachi. I am sure there must be many in other cities too.

What ink is that? Like the shading

on the ink bottle it is written "color drawing ink"

shopkeeper told me that this ink is not suitable for fountain pens

it is to be used with kalam and brushes

i think when writing with kalam the stroke is darker initially and as the ink reserve on the tip of the kalam starts to end it becomes lighter

not sure about it

see this

A poem by Nizar Qabbani, written by my girlfriend using an Arabic Italic custom nib. The translation is written in my own hand.

"The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what's true..." (Carl Sagan)

Lovely words.

And I'm wondering what green FP ink might give me the same color and shading as Silver Ink's drawing ink

I filled a fountain pen with same drawing ink although the shop keeper had said that it is not for fountain pens but only kalams and brushes.

Its working good

but i do not see much variation in shading like it was with kalam

You can try with a broad nib.

Alternately

You can make a kalam with a small branch of tree and a paper cutter.its very easy but care should be taken while handling a paper cutter

does not necessarily needs to be a bamboo

Be careful! Many if these inks contain shellac. Once they dry in the feed, your pen is clogged and useless. Please get it out of your pen immediately and rinse, rinse, rinse to see if you can get it out. There are threads in the repair forum and elsewhere on the board about dealing with the effects of calligraphy ink in FPs.

I appreciate your efforts, but couldn't bear to see a pen ruined.

I think some if the Sailor inks, perhaps the discontinued Epinard will give this color and effect. Perhaps Diamine's Salamander? I'll look in Inky Reviews.

Looks like a Dollar 717i. I have the same pen along with a Dollar قام (qalam). I don't really like the qalam though. I'm surprised that it's supposed to be a school pen – I find that the nib is too broad for that type of writing. It might be that I'm holding it wrong though. I've never used an italic nib before.
