Do The Fins On The Feed Have A Function?

My Waterman Hemisphere has them while my Lamy Studio doesn't. The question has always puzzled me too; I guess they're just decorative. Nice to finally figure out why!

If you had no fins the ink could flow across the whole width of the feed. The fins tone down this flow and act as reservoirs for the nib to draw ink from.

Do not let old pens lay around in a drawer, get them working and give them to a new fountain pen user.

Not to resurrect an old thread, but after reading through this entire post I am just amazed that so many people don't know what the fins under the nib are really for.

Yes, they might stop some leakage by capturing ink, and they might be decorative on some models, but for crying out loud doesn't anyone know what they are really for???

They are for dissipating heat from the friction that is caused when we write to fast!  Just like a Harley engine!  Sheesh!  Gotta show some folks the obvious!  Notice the similarities. Yup heat dissipaters for sure!

No need to thank me, it's something I do everyday at some point.

Nonsense. The Harley's fins are for collecting oil which flows freely from the head gasket. Eventually it works its way back into the sump and you don't have any problem taking it on a plane as long as you keep it nib up.

Are the push rods part of the filling mechanism?
