Who cares about what you think? If you don't like the photos, go to another thread. So damn simple.

Society runs on rules, whether you agree with those rules or not.

You may support people who choose to break rules just for the fun it (or the admiration of others), but I don't.

Your vehement expression of your values does not change mine.

It is that simple.

Taking photos when there is a prohibition is a petty issue. But if we all always followed "the rules," then blacks would still be riding in the back of the bus, among other things.

Guys! A bit of perspective please! I took a couple of pictures on my iphone and was asked not to. End of story. I was told that I could take 'panoramic' pictures of the pen dept. , but not close ups (after I had already snapped a couple). It's hardly crime of the century and NOT worth all this heat in the forum. Please, lets just keep it in perspective - it was a photo of a pen for goodness sake not the internal workings of an atom bomb, and besides the staff had better things to worry about...like serving ultra-rich people with no taste in pens. :headsmack:

Moderator: please consider locking this topic. I PROMISE not to take any more photo's of undressed pens without their parents permission.

You probably missed my next post; "Is it their store and hence their rules? Unless it violates one of your legal rights and/or privileges, Yes."

In case you haven't noticed, there is a CCTV camera in this shop. No one asks people if they want to be taped, do they ? So why should they demand something, especially more from someone who might give them money ?

There are two types of people. Those who comply to everything without even knowing why they do it. These ones are called sheep. They are told to jump off a cliff ? They do it. Autority asked for it !

And the other people, who use their freedom, and do things that are contrary to some stupid or invading rules. Curiously, the second kind of people makes the world change, usually for the better, while the first kind of people... well they exist, not that bad already, heh ?

Sure. And those businesses that refused to serve blacks, hotels that refused to let them enter through the front door, etc., all had legal rights to enforce those prohibitions. And by enforcing those rules, they did not violate the rights of the people against whom they were discriminating.

I'm not arguing over a few photos. I am arguing with your professed willingness to blindly adhere to rules. That kind of uncritical thinking allows tyranny to persist and flourish.

You know absolutely nothing of my history if you think that I am in any manner supporting the history of my country in regards to slavery or radial inequality.

And it is a bit of a stretch to take my argument from complying with a company's policy of "No Photos Allowed" to agreeing with a company's policy of "No Blacks Allowed"!

Actually, there are many more than two types of people in the world.

I am the type that sees the "Jump off the Cliff" sign and says "You first!" :roflmho:

Most fools will die by their own stupid rules and the world will be the better for it.

In the Harrods case, if I had a compulsion to take photos in the stores I frequent would simply not frequent Harrods. They would loose my money, and if enough others also objected to their rule, then they would suffer the fate of all businesses that lack for funding.

Vis-a-vis writing 'honoured (sic)' (olivier78860's post above), would most Americans really fail to understand the British spelling?

I'm not far off publishing a probably-unsuccessful book on Kindle, and I have wondered about including a note about that.

And while I'm on the subject, we also, of course, place primacy in the single inverted comma before the paired.

And I would have placed the word sic in square brackets.

It's when this forum veers off pens and into lectures about "appropriate" behavior that it becomes truly unenjoyable. It's like. Romney/Obama debate. Drop it and move on: it was a couple of friggin pictures at Harrods, which is more akin to a museum than a store.

Only the second best Fudge in London though the lady at Harrods told me where to go to get the best.

I bought a tin of Jubilee Fudge at Harrods. It is unlike any fudge my wife (or I) have seen or had here in the USA. My wife liked it very much, but it's just a different thing than what we'd call fudge.

So, where is the best fudge?

Oh for crying out people, he took a few snapshots in a department store for personal use/to share on a pen newsgroup - I am willing to bet money on the fact that Harrods cares less about that breach of their rules than some people here. It is a little overdone to draw battle-lines in the sand over something as innocuous as this, and to start treating this like the start of the end of modern civilization.

Can we get back to pens please? Did they have the Stallone Skulls pen? God help me, it is hideous but I want one (thank god it is outside my price league).

True bliss: knowing that the guy next to you is suffering more than you are.

I totally agree.

This was my post originally and all I wished to do is share 3 photos from a lunchtime trip to a store. I have to say, the stupidity of the debate that has followed has put me off FPN.

The Chaos...Yes they did. The Montegrappa section of the store was really nicely done and the manager was very friendly. We chatted for ages as I have a Classica and he has a Extra 1930 (in his jacket pocket...nice). Their display was one of the biggest there and in the middle was a Chaos. As you probably know, Montegrappa has historical and current day links to the film industry and this is reflected in their style and range.

Incidentally, I also had a nice chat with one of the Lady's on the MB section talking about the heritage and masters collections and also my desire to get a 149...she offerred to reserve me a 149 if I wished to pop back after I had looked around :puddle: Maybe another day... :roflmho:

The problem for shops like 'Arrods will be in 10-15 years into the future when some of us might have embedded chips and minute fibre-optic cables to our brains and a memory chip. This will mean we can walk about in Harrods without anyone realising we are taking photos through our eyes using the embedded chips and memory chips. A shot in a wink!

To enforce their policy 'Arrods and others will have to ban human beings from their shops!! (wink ...)

I don't understand the close up ban as any of thse pens can be seen in great detail on the Internet ...

Maybe I have not noticed those posts that push political views or are so opinionated in some way.

This particular thread is of course in it's wide remit quite easy to hi-jack, but even then it has not worried me personally too much. I quite enjoy some of the humour - it helps towards making it less possible to be too serious and pompous, not that I would call anyone here pompous, just the possibility of leaning that way.

On the other hand, if you think the debate has been stupid (and maybe it has) then you are entitled to your opinion.

It's just a case of the usual contrarians being contrary for the sake of being contrary - lurk any internet forum long enough and you'll notice the same type that can pull an argument out of even an innocuous three word sentence ("How are you?" "This is nice." "I don't understand" etc.,). (and then there's idiots like me, that just can't help but stupidly point out the obvious, contributing nothing to the overall discussion instead of just remaining silent and watching how things play out - welcome to the brave new world of online discourse! :DDDD)

I'm unsure of his name, but isn't there an Italian fellow (I think that's what he was) that works there? Very pleasant to deal with.

I don't think that they had Onoto there last time I looked, which is a pity; only Yard-O-Led and CS as far as English representation went. I think the only thing I've ever bought there for myself was ink.

As for Harrods in general? No thank you.

God, I love being a pedant.

I joke about this with my wife. I'll ask "Seeing you're such a pedant, you obviously know the true meaning of the word 'pendant'." "Of course."

Well of course my response is part of the joke.

"Indeed. A pendant is a pedant that should be hanged by the neck."

A few plays on words here, but why not?

Just to go off topic a bit more, I've yet to wonder into Harrods. I had better get on with it as I might not have too much time left ...

Is it true that the store is no longer owned by Mr Al Fayed? That will (if true) be a relief to our royals, who thought him a totally unsuitable father in law for one of their ilk. I'd better not comment further or stay off topic any longer ...
