Montblanc 149 - Special Edition And Limited Edition Prices

Hi

I'm a huge montblanc fan and i really like the montblanc 149 fountain pen. The normal version seems abit too plain for my liking. The special edition and limited edition look really nice. So im thinking of purchasing one of these. Im not a collector, so i intend on using both of the pens as my daily writer. Would someone be kind enough to tell me roughly how much both of these pens usually sell for? How much would i be looking to pay for both of these pens? All the ones ive seen are brand new and unused. Im looking these pens in used condition, with or without the original boxes. Is their a significant price difference between used and new?

Thanks

Could you please indicate exactly which pens you are interested in.

Hi Mosh2k_7,

I agree with Pen Nut: give us a little more to go on. AFAIK, I haven't seen too many 149 SEs and LEs beyond those from MB's 75 and 100 anniversaries, as well as those issued for charity (e.g., Signature for Hope). Are these what you're referring to?

Now as far as finding used/new prices, you can look at a couple of sources:

- eBay (use the Advanced Search > check "Completed Listings" and look for results in green, which show you how much the winning bid was for)

- our own FPN classifieds (there are always a few 149s passing through here)

- the "Historical Sales" forum on FPN, which lists all prior classifieds up until last year (I think?) and is a good reference for historical prices

Lastly, depending on where you are located (US or Europe), you could also try contacting either FPN members Bryant, Archimark or penboard.de who are pen dealers and could likely source your desired 149 for you.

HTH!

Thank you for the replies. I apologise for not providing more information. These are the two pens that im interested in:

MONTBLANC 149 - special anniversary edition (pictures taken from google images) - pen has gold trim and normal white star

MONTBLANC 149 - limited 1924 edition (pictures taken from google images) - pen has rose gold trim and mother of pearl star

Im located in england. Ive seen plently of these pens for sale, but are nearly always brand new and are usually intended for collecting purposes. So personally it would not be ideal for me to buy these brand new sealed pens because once i start using them the price drops. Also i really wanted to bid on the wilmore montblanc auction that was held, but it was in america and the thought of having to pay 20% VAT and duty on the total price of the pens didnt seem very appealing to me :(

(i do not own these photos, just shown them for reference)

Thanks

First, you have excellent taste. MB 149 SE and LE are most beautiful 149s ever made by Montblanc. Now having said that there is a huge price difference between the two. You can pick up a nice used SE in excellent condition for around $1000USD and SE for around $2000USD. Now these are ball park figures so you might pay little more or less. If you are patient and wait for one on Ebay, I think you can pick one up for a great price. I have neither of these pens but do have LE MB 146 that I picked up couple of years ago on Ebay for around $700USD. Good luck with your hunt.

Thanks :) i know the huge price difference but its totally worth it. Theirs something about the MOP star that draws you in. I'm going to go for that version because i know if i get the regular version (none MOP star) i wont be happy. Lol

How the heck did the montblanc 149 - limited edition 1924 rose gold pen sold for sold $1250 in the wilmore auction? Thats an absolute bargain for anyone in the usa.

I was extremely lucky on my last vacation to find one of the 1924 LE pens still sealed for $999. My wife saw it before I did and it was on the counter to buy by the time I got to that section of the case. It was quite possibly the best deal we got on the trip. It is a great looking pen and for now is still in the box. I have to many others in the rotation right now but it will come out soon.

Wow yikes.gif Thats a hell of a deal. Was it the 149 you brought? I can get one brand new for $1700. Its not sealed, but the pen is brand new. Comes with original box. Is it worth it?

did you get it?

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Unfortunately I decided to take my chance at bidding for the pen instead. The auction started at $1500. I placed a bid of $1700 in the last few seconds of the auction, but someone outbidded me! Really annoyed about that!
