Pelikan M200 Vs Pelikan M400

Having briefly owned an M200 and an M400 I was surprised to note that I enjoyed using the M200 far more. I've owned a few M200s and I think the quality control on the nibs is probably not as good as the 400...but ones the tines were aligned properly all of my M200s are very, very smooth writers. The factory italics are butter...smoother than the stub I had ground by a well renowned nibmeister.

The steel nib's springiness makes it a more enjoyable ride than the gold nail. Add to that the fact that I can own an assortment of M200 nibs for less than the price of one M400 nib and I'm sold.

I returned my M400, not because I was disappointed with it in any way...but because it just didn't seem worth the money over the 200. I tried an M800 and felt it was a far superior pen: the nib was slightly springy AND smooth, the size was larger (obviously), and the brass piston hardware gave it heft. Love that pen. It's on the list!
