Broken Mont Blanc 149

Recommended Posts

I just purchased my second Mont Blanc 149 from a seller with very little knowledge about it.

Long story short, the pen arrived with a broken fill mechanism. The stem that works the piston is broken. Forgive my terminology, but I included pictures to give everyone an idea.

The seller has already partially refunded my money so I'm going to have it fixed rather than send it back.

My question:

Is this something that can be fixed cheaper than simply sending it to Mont Blanc? If so, would anyone recommend where?

I'd appreciate any feedback.

I don't know the exact price in the US but it is generally very cheap to have that fix.

Montblanc charge a flat fee of around $70 for their level 1 service, and for that they change the piston, the grip, the feed, the piston threads and anything else they need to change to make it work and look perfect. Your pen will come back looking like brand new.

If you can find anyone else to do all of that within 4 or 5 weeks with authentic Montblanc parts then go for it.

That's exactly what I had heard in past experience too. The seller already refunded me $70 so I may just go that route.

I'd def go the MB genuine route. I got my 149 back in 10 days from sending it out, brand spanking new.

Not really true. The technician evaluate and replace what deemed necessary. Some times it may include cap or barrel. Most times feed and barrel are included in the cone replacement.

If you want cap and clip, it may cost you another 75 bucks or so.

Or you may get lucky. I had it serviced few times. Clip, if ask it to replace, i will incur another $75. so is the cap, or it becomes level 2 at an extra charge..

Yeah..... I didn't make it clear. I was not under the tier 1 or 2 pricing. I got the "what happened to this, how, why???" pricing. Still, it was a great value (I very literally got a brand new pen) considering the time it took, how courteous they were, and of course the initial price I paid for the first one.

I have never been required to pay for anything more than level 1 pricing when sending my pens to Montblanc UK. I once had everything except the nib, cap and clip changed for £60.

(In fact there have been rare times when I haven't been asked to pay anything :happyberet: )

I had a MB149 serviced recently. Piston was stiff and the cap had a chip. Initial quote was $79, but only for a barrel replacement. I had them re-quote to include my cap and it still was only $79.

Okay, thanks guys. Given that the part probably cost less than $5 to make, I wasn't sure if there was a 3rd party person/company that someone may have recommended. I'll just go ahead and send it down to Texas for them to repair.

$70 service will include all plastic - sacrilege, how could I use that word for a MB, sorry precious resin parts. Metal clip, MB logo cap top and brass pistons would cost extra if broken.

I would recommend MB service.

Enjoy your pens

Have a nice day

But . . . can you get MB service for that fix without losing your solid ebonite feed? If not, where can you?

Hello all. I am bringing this thread back to life because I actually bought this pen from mmahany. I will probably send it in to MB Service and if I do I want the MB level 1 overhaul (cap, barrel, piston, etc). I'm just not sure how to ask for this in my request letter. In other words, I want everything that the tier 1 pricing includes except for possibly the ebonite feed. But it's not like I would be crushed if they replaced it. Any ideas on how to request this without it spilling over into tier 2 pricing?

Hi,

Please send to Montblanc repair center in Texas and write a note in it asking for cosmetic repair & overhaul( please do explain the needed buffing, blemishes and other requirements). You will get a quote from Montblanc before they proceed. Please do remember that anything to do with nib there is an extra charge.

There is also a phone number and you can call the customer service to verify and the expected time frame.

Hi Christy,

I have a question. When I sent my year 2000 149 in for a nib swap from M to OBB it cost me £215. Which I believe is level 3. Now then as the pen was virtually unused they only changed the nib and the feed and something about a spindle from memory but surely it deserves the grip etc being replaced for that money?

It's my understanding that nib replacements e.g M to OBB fall outside of the initial 6 week period does not fall under the tiered repair charge scheme.

Edited for spelling.
