New Omas Ogiva Celluloid...

colex

Recommended Posts

Indeed. Out with the "OMAS" lettering bling (new paragon?) and back with the (understated!) rings / (not so understated) greek key on the cap. If they'd re-issue pens with the same features as Colex's Nos. 2 & 6, I'd be very happy (and very out of pocket). Or maybe a non-faceted greek key.

By the way -- my scarlet has arrived earlier this week (EF nib) -- very nice indeed. I have to admit that until I've had a close look at it, I hadn't realised that it's a numbered edition.

  • 1 month later...

I picked up my Ogiva Wild shortly before Christmas, and I thought when handling it that it seemed quite large/long -- longer than what I remembered about my old Ogivas. Had a bit of time today to verify that my hips hand don't lie. :D

The new celluloid Ogiva Wild is the longest Omas Ogiva I've ever seen and held:

  • Ogiva Wild (2012): 15.1 cm
  • Ogiva Demo blue (2012): 14.7 cm
  • Ogiva Resin original 3 band design (1980s - early 1990 production*): 14.7 cm (*1980s first version bordeaux, 1990s black, MOMA)
  • Ogiva Autunno (2004): 14.2 cm

The original 2004 Autunno followed the trend set by the faceted models: the celluloid pens were always a bit shorter (around 5 mm) than the corresponding resin models. The Novelli Ogivas (assuming the other colors are like the Wild) reverse that trend; they're longer than the old-style resin Ogivas.

My Ogiva Black Lucens (2012) also measures at 15.1cm long, the same length as the Ogiva Wild (2012).

The older Omas AM87 briarwood pen (which I presume was based on the Ogiva model) is 14.8cm. So it does seem that the new batch of Novelli Ogivas are all slightly longer than the older ones.

The briarwoods are basically overlays on the resin pens.

"Slightly longer"? It's a centimeter longer than the 2004 celluloid Ogiva Autunno.

How you know this sort of stuff is beyond me...but are you saying that the briarwood paragon LEs were made by putting a veneer of sorts over a regular paragon body? How do you know this?

First, I was speaking of the Ogiva Briarwoods, not the recent Paragon woods. The only briarwood old-style Paragon that I know of it the Columbus LE. I don't know about the recent Paragons woods.

As far as the old style pens are concerned, how I know this stuff -- I ask or have been told. I've been told by store owners who've visited the factory and/or seen presentations on the manufacturing of the briarwoods and also the T2s (which are also thin layers of Ti over resin bodies).

You can also see this by inspecting the of the cap -- you'll see the plastic of regular resin cap. Further, I know people who's briarwoods caps have cracked or have been damaged -- guess what? The caps still don't leak.

Also if you think about it, it wouldn't be such a great idea for ink to be contact with wood on the inside of the barrel even if treated. Old-style Ogivas and faceted pens don't have inner liners, unlike say the new Paragon, so the ink is in direct contact with the ink. Omas would have had to have designed/developed a separate construction for the briarwoods and T2, but they didn't with the old style pens.

That sort of inner liner came later with the new Paragon, which by the way had problems early in the production. Again, I don't know about these new style Paragon woods. I have no interest in the pens. If you want to know, write Omas and ask them.

[i admit, I wasn't expecting to see it, let alone at the price I paid. I'll still be way ahead even after getting the rings redone. LOL, and they'll be better than the original. :D

Oh by the way, the original LE Extra Lucens, even though it's a piston filler, was based on the senior size vintage faceted Extra Lucens. So like the vintage pen there is no "step" in the barrel, and it matches closely the dimensions of the vintage pen. So it's actually shorter (and slightly smaller in diameter) than a modern celluloid Paragon. It's actually shorter than the Galileo, which is shorter than other celluloid Paragons.
