Totally down for this.

I'm Jake. I'm 26 (nearly 27, but also like, nearly 12 sometimes)

I work in the public safety genre of the world, Law Enforcement especially - as a 911 dispatcher. It's a fantastic and stressful job - with some fair bit of downtime (to write letters!) I am recovering from a motor vehicle accident - I was struck by an impaired driver this past May. On a monday morning. 10am. Go figure. Ended up with a clean tibia-fibula break on one side, and a shattered pelvis on the other. AND nerve damage with the pelvis thing. In the foot, of all places. Anywho - I've been spending this time working on my handwriting, and devouring netflix, and HBO.

Things I'm interested in outside of fountain pens - that's a scary question. I'm a collector of hobbies. I play guitar, moderately well. I play Jazz Trumpet, exceptionally well. I love almost all genres of music, I believe in books. I love fantasy especially - but I'm horrifyingly picky and rather hard on authors that don't deliver. I love movies, and will watch practically anything once. I have a particular love for strange, screw with your mind or really make you think kind of flicks. I have a near perfect memory from about 2nd grade to current. I say nearly perfect. I'm not truly eidetic like Sheldon Cooper or Spencer Reid - I can't pull detailed numbers/dates from super-far back. In the last 5 years or so I'm good though. I also have a love for technology. I guess I'm new/old school there - I'm rather gifted at repair/maintenance of computers and printers, and have certifications in cisco networking, microsoft, linux, and comptia. I have written one novella and am working on several more for a kind of single-author anthology - based around a common theme. Personally, I think it's fantastic, which I think means something. I really really like HBO's original series' - Game of Thrones is probably my favorite show ever, but I also really enjoyed the Soprano's, Deadwood, Band of Brothers, and the freaking Leftovers (my new obsession, it's fantastically weird) I also enjoy shooting firearms for recreation. I will never argue politics with anyone because once you start, you've lost. If you like Parks and Recreation, or anything else Nick Offerman does, we'll get along. I play World of Warcraft, it's likely my one vice - deal with it. I collect vinyl records, and enjoy spending days out in the woods. I can think of nothing better than driving around aimlessly on gravel roads for hours.

Just putting myself out there for the first time...I've never done this before, but willing to give it a try.

Stuff I can share my views on and have a discussion about (some are stronger topics for me than others):

- Philosophy and areas associated.

- Social Critique

- Language

- Culture

- Arts (Movies, Drawing, Painting, Sculpture)

- Calligraphy (starting this year)

- Technology

- History

- Literature

- Love

- Creativity and the Creative Spirit

- Science Fiction (Star Wars and Star Trek)

Man and his quest for meaning. And mostly observations from life in general...

I don't watch TV or read newspapers so am mostly out of date on politics and popular stuff.

Languages I can write in: English of course, German (intermediate, still learning). A couple others too.

Drop me a pm if interested...

In a world where there are no eyes the sun would not be light, and in a world where there were no soft skins rocks would not be hard, nor in a world where there were no muscles would they be heavy. Existence is relationship and you're smack in the middle of it.

Hi - I'm LostCity - and I live in Lost City, Oklahoma on a 250 farm. We call it a farm, but the only animals are three crazy dogs, and the crop lends toward weeds and wilderness. While I live in the foothills of the Ozarks I get out and about a good deal, mostly in the US but abroad as often as possible (which is not often enough).

My pen habit began a few decades ago but has accelerated a bit of late. I have a preference for Wahl Eversharp Bantams and glass dipping pens.

I'm a woman who likes fat books, good beer, chocolate, whiskey, fine yarn, yoga, and good writing tools.

PM me if you'd like to exchange letters.

Thanks,
Denise

Apart from now being a 56 year old semi-retired English teacher, not a great deal has changed. I have quite a few great regular correspondents, but the vicissitudes of life/extreme boredom have resulted in others dropping off the epistolary radar and I would be happy to start some new conversations. Location, interests, state of life, etc, do not matter, and don't think English teacher means you get your letter back with corrections!

Kind regards

Timothy

Now 57 and happy to add some new conversations. Please PM if interested. I reply to every letter, I receive.

Kind regards,

Timothy

Edited for typography.[Never quite cracked typing...]

Apparently I never quite cracked multiquoting either, as the original post from 2014 is missing.

So: I am a semi-retired male English teacher in southwest Scotland. I am happy to write on any topics and am especially interested to read about people's countries/ history/geography/current affairs/ politics/ religion/ daily life/ interests, etc. I will have a go at most subjects with varying degrees of competent knowledge and interested ignorance. I was 55 and not semi-retired in the first unmultiquoted post.

Kind regards,

Timothy

New year, new post. As always, I am looking for interesting people to correspond with. I am now 41, still single and without children, still not interested in changing either of those things. Probably not coincidentally, I have a lot of hobbies, chief among them film photography and collecting vintage cameras. I include photos with most of my letters.

I am originally from the San Francisco Bay Area (not from the city itself, though) and like most people, my personal morals are a product of where I was raised. I don't really like to write about politics, but I believe firmly in things like civil rights, the separation of church and state, and the teaching of actual science in public schools. As I now live in my ancestral homeland of south Louisiana (I moved here in 2010), this sometimes makes life challenging.

Other interests are antique stores, cemeteries, Southern Conjure, embroidery and cross stitch, journaling, cooking/baking, papercrafts, road trips, and (of course) reading. PM if interested.

Keepers of private notebooks are a different breed altogether, lonely and resistant rearrangers of things, anxious malcontents, children afflicted apparently at birth with some presentiment of loss. Joan Didion

Hi all!,

My name is Francis and I hail from Southern California in the United States.

I'm fairly new to FPN and fairly new to fountain pens in general. At the moment I have a few lower end models, but I've always enjoyed the act of writing. I hope to get some nice vintage pens soon.

Things I like:

-FOOD!, especially Italian, Japanese...well, really if the food is good, I'll eat it.

-LEGO

-Animals

-Spiders/bugs (I particularly like jumping spiders)

-fountain pens of course!

-guitar

-heavy metal/orchestral music

-a dark sense of humor

-horror

-photography (I'm a professional event photographer though I enjoy photographing some of the things I love, including horror, food, LEGO, and nature.)

If you want to learn more and maybe write letters send me a message :)

Cheers!

Just gotten into fountain pens, but would love to find a penpal or two overseas. Especially penpals from Japan, Germany, Scotland, Ireland, Switzerland, or The U. K. Open to other countries as well, so long as letters can be exchanged in english.

currently using J.Herbin 1670 series inks, Noodlers "Heart of Darkness" and Kon-peki blue in mostly Jinhao pens and a Pilot metro.

Hello from the Great White North. At least it's white until this thing called "The Spring Thaw".

I'm on a quest to improve my cursive which was once reasonable but then I started work as a doc. I'm retired now and what was once legible handwriting is now properly labelled post-apocalyptic chicken scratch. The quest started when I found an inexpensive Sheaffer calligraphy pen in my desk that I didn't put there. It turned out to belong to my daughter who misplaced it about a decade ago. Curious, I soaked it overnight to loosen the well desiccated ink, bought some ink cartridges and hocus-pocus; my handwriting actually looked a bit better!

That was about 18 months ago and now I have a variety of pens, both fountain and dip, more bottles of ink than I care to discuss right now and enough stationery to hand write the great Canadian novel. My wife says I go overboard on things but what does she know?

I'm a bit of a science buff and very much into amateur astronomy. I have a large personal library filled with books on science, philosophy (some of which I've read), psychology, fishing and a few on hunting. I'm an avid fly fisher, fly tier, once avid hunter (way too many fly rods, reels, rifles and shotguns which of course isn't enough) and reader. History, biographies and any interesting aspect of the human condition also piques my curiosity. My interests are both catholic (small 'c') and eclectic.

So, even if you're vegan and a card-carrying member of PETA, we can still exchange snail-mail. After all, right now it's much too cold outside to get worked up over differences of opinion. If we all had the same ideas, how boring would that be?

Ink has something in common with both money and manure. It's only useful if it's spread around.

The last time I'll take up space here, I promise :D

I have sent off many letters over the past weeks but there are some pen pals I am not sure if have given up on me or not, if I owe them an answer or the other way around, have letters gone lost in transit or I don't know. So much time has passed and that is on me.

I just wanted to say, if any of my pen pals haven't heard from me in a while, and want to hear from me again, let me know on a message and I will write ASAP as I am back in the game!

- and I do not want to let any one of you go if I don't have to <3

That's it, take care! :) :) :)

Do you still need more pen pals? :P

My name is Jeff (such an exotic name I know ;) ) and I'm currently 29 years of age, about to turn 30 this month (January).

I just recently went back to school to start a new life and make up for large mistakes made when I was younger. I just finished my first of 7 quarters towards my associates degree in network administration. I could be called a computer geek and it would be pretty accurate. I love technology and computers, but I also love the "ways of the past" for lack of a better way to put it. Respect, courtesy, and the traditions of the past. Too many people growing up now have lost such simple things like holding a door for someone, respecting your elders, giving up your seat when there are none to women or elderly, simple things that in the past would have been seen as common sense.

I got into fountain pens when I went back to school and realized my handwriting was pretty bad. I started trying to improve it and eventually stumbled on reading about fountain pens and the happened to see a cheap Pilot Plumix at the store in my school and decided to purchase it. I was instantly intrigued and started looking up more about fountain pens and writing with them. Then I eventually bought a Pilot Metropolitan and my first ever bottle of ink (Private Reserve Electric DC Blue) and I have been hooked ever since. I don't have much money since I'm in school and unemployed so the fountain pens I have bought since getting into the hobby have all been cheap Chinese pens, which admittedly I really like for some reason. I'm sure if I could afford it I would buy more robust pens but for now money dictates I stay with cheap pens.

Some quick things about me and interests:

  • Currently a student studying for my associates in Network Administration.
  • I am very much into technology, especially computer networking, hardware & software. (I also enjoy pc gaming, mainly games with great stories)
  • Have a love for almost anything with a motor and wheels. Many of my previous jobs were automotive repair.
  • I love the outdoors and nature in general. Walking through the woods and really taking in your surroundings is deeply relaxing. I really enjoy fishing, though not so much hunting.
  • I believe in oldschool ideals that seem to be lost today and paying it forward.
  • My two best friends happen to have tails and like to bark at almost anything. I love dogs and have a female Minpin/terrier mix named Bear and a male dachshund /Chihuahua mix named Rocko.
  • I might be addicted to coffee and I think it's the only thing that keeps me awake.
  • I love learning new things and I'm constantly looking up random things to learn.
  • Astronomy & the possibility of life outside our little spec in the universe is something I like to ponder on late at night.
  • Ancient civilizations and mythology fascinate me.
  • I am new to fountain pens but I'm already addicted. I love the personal nature of handwriting, whether cursive or print. I am on computers all day but a typed message just doesn't have the same soul as a handwritten one.

Being so involved with technology I don't get many chances to write by hand as you can imagine. So I was thinking that this would be a great way to have more chances to do so while also meeting new people and sharing stories. I've never done anything like this before but it sounds interesting and I wouldn't mind giving it a shot.

I'm open to any penpals male or female, young or old.

It has been so long since I've been here but I happily have retained two penpals! I am open to more and my interests have changed a bit since.

I am female, 45+, unmarried, no children. I work full-time as an admin in a multi-international financial services company. Don't let this stop you from talking about your kids! I have a nephew who has worked as a line cook in some of the best restaurants in New York City!

So, my first interest is Food! However, in 2015, I started a paleo diet. I am greatly enjoying the health benefits! While I am not 100% paleo, I am happy spending more time in the kitchen again and preparing many of my own meals. My nephew is happy to learn about what variations I'm using to cook or bake.

Next are Pens! I have a collection of both modern and vintage pens though I have been using the modern pens more of late. I prefer italics and I get my pens ground at pen shows. This would explain why I'm using modern pens these days! I will include inks and paper interests here as well.

My workout is training in a boxing gym 3 times a week. I used to box/kickbox some years ago but stopped. I came back to it 2 years ago. I missed it and still love it. I'm glad I'm still in good condition.

Other interests:

- Aging and what you're doing and/or philosophies on life

- Languages - I studied and spoke at different levels French, Spanish, Dutch, Mandarin Chinese. Not fluent in any, but I would not mind exchanging simple phrases/thoughts in these languages!

- Movies - action (martial arts, crime dramas), science fiction (star wars, star trek), international films

- I journal everyday.

I'm sure other interests will come to me.

If you'd like to exchange mail, please PM me!

Hello all,

I've posted here before but it seems that a few pen pals have fallen off the radar so looking to get another couple! My name is Kirk Langdon, I'm from Newfoundland, Canada but am living and working in Alberta, Canada. My interests include but are not limited to: Fountain pens, ink, paper, (recently) trying out dip pens and calligraphy, handwriting improvement, history, philosophy, theology, traditional wet shaving, coffee etc., but am willing to chat about anything really. Give me a shout if you'd like to get some paper in the mail that isn't a bill!

Folks:

I'm interested in sharing the written word with other enthusiasts.

I'm in my mid-50's, have traveled quite a bit, lived in most corners of the US, worked in Australia for several years, and grew up in a house on an island that was five miles over dirt roads to the nearest blacktop, and another five miles to the nearest town (population 1800). While I've lived in cities large and small most of my adult life, I renew my sense of self and the world by spending as much time as I can in wide open spaces, deep forests, and mountain tops.

My interests and hobbies are all over the map:

* ancient history, languages and culture, both around the Mediterranean and Asia

* physics - both on the small scale and the cosmic scale

* philosophy

* science and speculative fiction

* classical literature from all cultures

* the natural world and natural sciences

* arts, in all forms

I've been writing in one way or another since I was a teenager, and began my fascination with letters, languages, alphabets and other forms of communication when I first encountered JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit as a kid, since Tolkien was a philologist and created several languages to bring even more life to his worlds. While I spend most of my workday staring at and working on a computer display, writing with pen and paper (and sometimes stylus and clay) is much more fulfilling and enjoyable.

Thanks, and hope to hear from some of you soon,

Bryce

Hello ALL

I have wide range of interest and have a heavy left and right brain. I would love to receive mail. We can speak on mostly anything.. pipes to pens, whiskey to milkshakes, splitting logs to water color painting, designing substations to writing a decent haiku. The more the merrier. I'm interested too, but in low numbers.

24 y/o male

Married

My primary interests are creative writing (bachelor's in English with a creative writing option), and medieval stuff.

For the most part I'm open to whatever though.

I've Never had a pen pal or anything before, so I'll need to learn the ropes.

Edit: On a budget so unfortunately domestic U.S. only for now. : (

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

lamarax, thank you for a well-informed response! I've been worried that FountainPenHospital in NYC would suffer...

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍

@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27
I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I'm looking to repair some cheap pens that are starving for ink yet filled, and eventually get new nibs; and development of repair skills (an even longer learning curve than my art studies - lol). Every hobby needs a hobby, eh ...

    • JungleJim 1 Sept 1:55
Perhaps it's like saying Beetlejuice 3 times to get that person to appear, though with @Sailor Kenshin you only have to say it twice?

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...
    • OldFatDog 26 July 19:41
I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
    • RegDiggins 23 July 12:40
Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen
