Snail Mail Writing List

Hi Guys

I guess I need to write a description of what I am like and what I am looking for but it is quite simple - I am looking for someone female to write to, preferably someone who wants to write back!

Check out my profile for the 'about me' bit, if anyone out there is interested in corresponding via snail mail (and occasionally email) then drop me a PM and lets get started :)

Hello. I would love to write some letters as well. :)

I've never really had any penpals, but I would definitely like to start. If anything else, it would give my fountain pens more use than they're getting right now by coming to work with me.

To introduce myself -- my name is Max, I'm a 19 year old college drop-out living in my hometown of Toronto, Canada working as a sort of "file monkey" for a fairly large North American life insurance company while I wait to go back to a different college in September.

I guess I would say that in a way I am a typical "average guy." I love everything cars, guns (although I do not own any, 'cause Canada), beer, steaks... As well as fountain pens (of course), history, and practically anything to do with computers and tech. I also love to read, and try to always be reading a novel if I have the time (although I will often decide to game with some buddies instead of going off reading). I don't really follow sports at all (unless you count some motorsports), so I guess I'm not that typical. I also love to watch many TV shows, as well as movies. In a way I would say that I am a little confused politically -- I'm generally quite liberal, although there are some things on which I think I have "conservative" views(?). I'm not much for religion, so that would not really be a big topic of conversation.

Well, that's me sort of "in a nutshell," if anyone is interested feel free to PM or email me for details. :)

I had initially steered clear of this because I get busy and was afraid I wouldn't follow through. But I've been writing to Tawanda, and having a great time doing so. (Whether she thinks my letters are rubbish is another matter *altogether*). So, I'd like to join in. PM me if you want a letter.

A little about me. I like lots of different pens (vintage and modern, flex and nail, even some stylos!) and lots of different inks (it's the whole Gemini thing, don't ya' know). I do seem to have a particular fixation for orange... :hmm1: I like to travel when I can - lately it's been the Far East (for work - mostly Taiwan several times, but also Singapore, and South Korea, with personal trips to Cambodia and Vietnam recently), though a recent trip to the Azores (also for work, Terceira, with a side trip to Sao Jorge) was completely delightful, and I fully intend to go back the first chance I get (Corvo and Flores this time, or Pico with a climb up the volcano if I can get back in shape).

I'm likely to be on the rambling spectrum of things, letter-content-wise (as you can tell), but I will probably be entertaining, at the very least. (In that "who is this nutter?!" kind of way). I accumulate/collect books (though generally not super-fragile/precious ones, since, similar to using all my pens, I like to read them). As an example of my schizoid tastes in books (similar to my pen/ink tastes), I have a first US edition (1915), second printing of A Boy's Will by Robert Frost (beaten up and incribed with the owner's name, "user" grade, if you will, but it makes me *SO* happy to hold it...) sitting next to a 1959 eighth printing of Howl and other poems by Allen Ginsberg (with Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese and Kahlil Gibran's Sand and Foam lurking behind). I blame my father entirely for this, as he collects books as well. I *do* have everything Simon Winchester has ever written, though. So does my Dad (we agree on that!) :D And lest you think my letters will be entirely cerebral, note that I am in San Antonio, Texas. There is a very real risk of receiving rants about skunks, armadillos, urban deer, and the fact that it's too hot and it hasn't rained...

And yes, I do indeed like eating peanuts with chopsticks (as you can see from my signature). And those special, special people who have bothered to visit my member profile know that I also have seven kinds of mustard in my refrigerator (though I've recently gotten a tip from a fellow FPN member to try Herlocher's dipping mustard, which would bring it to eight). Mustard is *very* important...

Oh, and I like dancing bunnies. :bunny01:

A lot.

:bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01:

Sooooo... If this little introduction makes you want to run screaming, well then, move along to the next post. If it sounds remotely amusing, PM me and I'll write you a letter. And never forget - you can always use letters as good firestarters or wadded up as packing when shipping pens... :P

(Edit: So where do I get those cute little thingies people put in their sig lines saying they're in the letter exchange? Presuming anyone wants me to write, of course.... )

I wouldn't be a frequent writer, but once every few weeks would be great.

I'm into the outdoors, gardening, fishing, poetry (reading and writing), learning, cooking/eating good food, and of course using and collecting fountain pens.

Send a message if you want to exchange the random letter.

the pen is the window into the writer's soul

Hi, folks! I joined this forum a few days, and encouraging me to write before I visited the different sections, until I came to this section and I could not resist being part of this.

My name is Ricardo, Peru, 38 years old, married (I wonder if I've updated my profile) and until recently I have resumed my interest in fountain pens. I like writing (duh!) and would be great if I could correspond with friends from other countries.

PM me if you're interested!

P.S. My English is not quite good so my answer to your letter may take a while to be answered.

I've always wanted a penpal who can write in Hebrew. Anyone fit that criteria (anywhere you live) that wants to try corresponding in Hebrew with me? I am a PhD student in physics at Rutgers and enjoy talking about pretty much anything.

If you're interested in exchanging letters with a 35 year old Texan who is interested in history, firearms, mechanical watches, military aircraft, spacecraft, and other eclectic interests, let me know. I just recently became interested in fountain pens, and I think it would be interesting to hear about day to day life pretty much anywhere but the U.S. PM me your address if you are interested. Have a good one!

Happily sliding down the slippery slope of fountain pen acquisition disorder.

I'm in! I write letters to friends from back home, but they tend to not reply very fast. So I would love to give this a shot.

My name is Michael Ward, I am a 28 year old Canadian, living in California. I have been writing with fountain pens for some time now. I'd say 98% of my writing is done with vintage flex, dip quills, or now my Noodler's creeper. I look to be about 20 years old or so, but have been obsessed with "older" things my entire life. I am a hip hop and tap dancer (tours, movies, music videos, tv shows, etc...) by profession, but also have a custom shoe business/clothing line that I run out my my apartment. I consider myself a collector of hobbies, and am known for learning/studying new things all the time.

Hah, I feel like I'm writing a bio for e-harmony or something. If you feel like getting some random letters about whatever I happen to be up to, or have been studying lately, send me a PM. I'd like to think I wouldn't disappoint.

I recently wrote a handwritten letter to my 6th grade teacher (she found an old poem of mine, it turned out to be the worst limerick ever, but that is for another thread). And, though I had to write it twice, because after I wrote it, I thought, "I have a $30 pen, that should look better than that."

It was fun to do...so I'll bite...

Hi there! Just joined. Are the forums no longer active?
    • Mercian 19 Apr 20:51
@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.
    • Claes 17 Apr 8:19
      @bhavini A glass nibbed pen

@Jeffrey Sher it looks like this user used to be the organizer of the club https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/profile/8343-hj1/ perhaps you could send him a direct message, although his profile says he hasn't been on the site since 2021.

CANNOT FIND A LINK to pen club israel. what is eth website please
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 22:48
@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

lamarax, thank you for a well-informed response! I've been worried that FountainPenHospital in NYC would suffer...
    • bhavini 15 Apr 18:28
What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 17:03
Hello @Jeffrey Sher, pen club information can be found in the Pen Clubs, Meetings, and Events sub forum. If you use Google site search you can find information specific to Israel.
    • Jeffrey Sher 14 Apr 8:25
Shalom just joined . I have been collection fountain pens for many years. I believe there is a club in Israel that meets monthly. please let me have details. .

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:33
      Guess who loses
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

    • lamarax 2 Mar 20:38
Oh well. In case of failure you can always wring the paper to have a nice -albeit somewhat stale- cup of coffee back.
    • T.D. Rabbit 2 Mar 10:20
@Astronymus I could use cornstarch... Or i could distill it and make it very concentrated.
    • T.D. Rabbit 2 Mar 10:20
@lamarax That's what I used! (In reply to black coffee).. But the milk might not be good at all for paper.

    • lamarax 17 Feb 18:05
Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.
    • Astronymus 17 Feb 16:19
YOu might need to thicken the coffee with something. I admit I have no idea with what. But I'm pretty sure it would work.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I'm looking to repair some cheap pens that are starving for ink yet filled, and eventually get new nibs; and development of repair skills (an even longer learning curve than my art studies - lol). Every hobby needs a hobby, eh ...

    • JungleJim 1 Sept 1:55
Perhaps it's like saying Beetlejuice 3 times to get that person to appear, though with @Sailor Kenshin you only have to say it twice?

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
    • RegDiggins 23 July 12:40
Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen
