Snail Mail Writing List

Hi all,

I'm female, 64, a retired database administrator. I'm looking for a new pen pal or two. I had five at one time and they dwindled down to one. It would be nice to have a couple more. Please see my profile for more information.

Hello,

I'm also looking for one or two pen pals to practice my writing, use up my ink, and for the camaraderie.  I'm female, 40s, based in Texas.  My profile is up to date.

@Nimmireth We have at least Claire in common.  Would you be interested?

Hi.

I'm 43, male, live in Portugal with my wife and daughter.
I'm quite an avid reader with wide ranging tastes but my preferences go to the classics, history, mythology, fantasy and science fiction. I'm currently going through the first volumes of Livy's History of Rome.
As with literature, my tastes in music are quite varied and I enjoy music going from the classical to heavy metal.
I enjoy travelling, skiing and mountain trekking.
I'd be happy to have one or two penpals. If you're interested, please DM me.

Hello everyone.

I am looking for more pen pals to experience the joys of broadening my horizons with new ideas and different perspectives - and maybe a little to justify the stash of ink I will never get through - but I can try!

I'm a 65 year old female who is recently retired and trying to decide how to design a new lifestyle. No children, no partner - looking for platonic friendships.

I live on an island off the west coast of Canada and there is a lot of natural beauty here, so I do enjoy my time outside - in the forest, by the sea, or in my garden - which is mostly au naturel because the critters won't have it any other way. I also have a parrot buddy - she's an old lady bird now - and we are very close.  I appreciate critical thinking, creativity, history, different perspectives, the simple things in life - and I'm sure we'll find something to chat about.

My background is in IT and I also have dabbled in a lot of things as I really enjoy learning. I am also a creative person and will soon start a good quality oil painting course, after many years of being a dabbler.

Not seeking any particular age or gender - just folks who like to chat about this and that, and share perspectives about where they are in life, being ok with the differences and also our shared human experience - just to make life a bit richer and also to make the simple things better - like having something show up in the mail box that brings a smile.

best wishes, thanks for stopping by, and shoot me a DM if interested,

Cynthia

(Yes, this is a repost - it seems I put my original post in the wrong spot somehow... find the forum new/reply choice a bit unclear sometimes.)

Hello,

I'm a 33 year old male from NYC. I am a painter and my main hobby is researching the decorative arts of France in the 18th century. I love antiques, history, nature, and good films amongst other things.  I updated my profile for anyone who wises to look.

I picked up my first fountain pen during the pandemic and began studying calligraphy. I had dabbled with dip pens when I was young, but finally committed these past 4 years.

My letter writing style is correlated with my 18th century research - English Roundhand, wax seals, etc and it would be an added bonus to meet someone who shares this aesthetic sensibility. I much prefer to discuss the arts. Outside of this I do enjoy waxing philosophical.

Hi there,

I'd love some traditional snail mail pen pals.

My name is Chris, I'm 39 and I live in Dorset, UK. I work full time, and try and fit in both rest and play where I can

I'm slightly late to appreciating my fountain pen. It was the first pen I learned to write with (the Parker Jotter) and albeit, I've never lost my love for them, I can honestly admit I have regarded it with the admiration it deserves until very recently.

Please feel free to DM me 😊

For some reason, I can't update my profile, so here it goes :)

Please send me a message when you would like to exchange snail mail addresses!

Some info about me:

For work, I am an IT specialist, working at IBM Netherlands (currently in hybrid cloud integration, if anyone is interested).

I was born in 1968, which now makes me 56 years old.

I used to be a vintage Sheaffer collector in the 1990s and early 2000s, but my interests moved away from fountain pens some twenty years ago. However, it's time to get into real pens, ink and paper again!

Apart from that, my main hobby is jazz music; I play saxophone and clarinet in a number of jazz orchestras. We enjoy long weekend walks as well, and I am a hobby photographer.

We live close to Utrecht; my wife, myself, and our cat (our children have flown out).

If you want to know more, I'd love to hear from you (preferably on paper).

Thanks!

Hi,

I’m interested in sharing snail mail letters.
My name is Phil, I’m 58, and live in the UK near the Lake District National Park.
I’m a newcomer to the world of fountain pens, though I have had a low key obsession with stationary since childhood… I can see more pens joining my sole Pelikan M205…

My interests are wide a varied. My lifelong passion is the spirituality of religions, including rejected religions, such as early/Judaic Christianity. Also historic occultism (not as a practitioner, but in the sense of studying historic occult thought).

I enjoy hiking, am married, have a pet cat, and other previous hobbies include: amateur rocketry, tai chi, wargaming, chess, taiko, rock climbing, playing music, advaita Vedanta, cookery…

If any of that sounds interesting, I’d love to hear from you, any age, sex, gender identity, nationality, race, shoe size. All good.

Greetings,

I'm looking for more pen pals as I have a lot of free time right now. I'm in my 30s with a chronic illness so I spend mostly at my home except for rare FP events like the Hub.

I've been in the hobby for over a decade since I started in HS and I kept up with new brands and releases up until 2-3 years ago but I still think about stationery often. My favorite pen is the platinum century #3776 and I like Sailor inks along with Tsubame notebooks. Also, I used to collect blank notebooks but I hit the point I had way more paper than I needed for my daily journals. Also, I used to have more FP but I sold them to pay for essentials I loved discussing both vintage and modern types.

My other hobbies are reading, writing, Figures, games, FFXIV, anime/manga, nail polish, indie perfumes, and cats I have none but they are adorable.

Let me know if you're interested in exchanging letters too.

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow

Hey all - UK male actor here, looking for pen pals to write to.  Love libraries, books, travel/adventure and films.  I am part of the ROAC and Postcrossing communities and also do a little wax sealing etc.  I just like old things I suppose...

If anyone is interested in coffee-shop penned, coffee-fuelled, slow writing, drop me a line.

Hi there!

27M here, based in US, with my wife and our two cats. Only started using Fountain Pens about 3 years ago, and fell out of the hobby for about a year after going in too deep too quickly. But now getting back into it!

Currently working in tech, but have continued to be intrigued by History and Philosophy so I have been slowly getting into philosophy really as of the last year.

I love learning new things, and having healthy discussions about any topic!

I’m a big fan of Running, watching Baseball, reading (recently I have been bouncing around Philosophy and Brandon Sanderson), spending time out in nature, Fountain Pens, Inks, general stationery (have way too much of it - if that’s even possible), Magic the gathering, and D&D.

Happy to connect and discuss any topics!

- LM

Good evening!

I am hoping to find a penpal or two.

I just turned 61. After nearly 21 years of living in the UK, I moved back to the USA a couple of years ago. It's wonderful being back around my family.

I love using my fountain pens (and am sadly addicted to ink....), reading, writing, music, spirituality, theatre. I am up for discussing anything.

I loved the pen shows in the UK and I am looking forward to finding a pen show for me to attend on this side of the ocean.

if you are up for another penpal, please feel free to PM me!

Afternoon all,

Some time ago I used to have some penpals, however work / family life etc meant that we eventually lost communication.

I have a bit more time on my hands now, so would like to start writing again. Especially now that my fountain pen and ink collection has grown, and they don't always see as much use as I'd like.

I'm near 30 and from the UK. Happy to post internationally or domestically. Hobby wise is gaming, a little photography although far less than I like, reading and travelling. Open to other topics though.

Hi everyone,

I used to correspond with a few people but life decided to throw a spanner in the works and I was unable to enjoy my pens for several years. But I’m back and looking for someone to pester delight with my letters. 🙂

I’m female, mid 40s, living in a village with my wonderful partner. I love Vinyl Cafe (Canadian radio show, if you know, you know and love), colours, jazz, photography, old black and white films, interior design, trees and Snoopy.

Drop me a line if you’re interested!

It is coming up to February, a time I usually love sending letters via Incowrimo. However, as my posts there are invisible, I need to find other ways to get my fix. So, if anyone fancies a letter from the UK, with nice postage applied, feel free to message with your postal address, and 5 not-serious (not all about stationery either) questions to get the ball rolling.

There are many charities which welcome letter “donations”, one-off letters (you will not receive a reply) which volunteers write and will be forwarded to people dealing with various illnesses, or people in prison, or people who are generally socially isolated for a number of reasons.

There is one organisation which is actually a free penpal matching service which connects those who are in need of social connection with someone who will correspond with them, so instead of writing a one-off letter, you can build a correspondence relationship with the recipient.

Description from their website:

https://omega.uk.net/letterbox/

Letterbox (formerly A Letter from Louise) is a free penpal befriending service for socially isolated and lonely people. Our clients are carefully matched to volunteer befrienders, with whom they exchange supportive, friendly letters. They share stories about their lives, families and interests.

I will start a new thread today on the subject of donating letters to charities and in the first post I will list the organisations I have found here in the UK. I will update that initial post with other organisations around the world if anyone would like to add details to the thread.

Hi there! Just joined. Are the forums no longer active?
    • Mercian 19 Apr 20:51
@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.
    • Claes 17 Apr 8:19

    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 22:48
@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

lamarax, thank you for a well-informed response! I've been worried that FountainPenHospital in NYC would suffer...
    • bhavini 15 Apr 18:28
What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 17:03
Hello @Jeffrey Sher, pen club information can be found in the Pen Clubs, Meetings, and Events sub forum. If you use Google site search you can find information specific to Israel.
    • Jeffrey Sher 14 Apr 8:25

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:33
      Guess who loses
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??
    • Penguincollector 30 Mar 15:07

@lamarax I am horrified... And slightly intrigued. But mostly just scared.
    • lamarax 2 Mar 20:38
Oh well. In case of failure you can always wring the paper to have a nice -albeit somewhat stale- cup of coffee back.
    • T.D. Rabbit 2 Mar 10:20
@Astronymus I could use cornstarch... Or i could distill it and make it very concentrated.
    • T.D. Rabbit 2 Mar 10:20
@lamarax That's what I used! (In reply to black coffee).. But the milk might not be good at all for paper.

Looking to sell huge lot of pretty much every Man 200 made - FP, BP, MP, one or two RBs. Does anyone have a suggestion for a bulk purhase house? Thanks - and hope this doesn't violate any rules.
    • lamarax 17 Feb 18:05
Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.
    • Astronymus 17 Feb 16:19
YOu might need to thicken the coffee with something. I admit I have no idea with what. But I'm pretty sure it would work.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27
I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I'm looking to repair some cheap pens that are starving for ink yet filled, and eventually get new nibs; and development of repair skills (an even longer learning curve than my art studies - lol). Perhaps it's like saying Beetlejuice 3 times to get that person to appear, though with @Sailor Kenshin you only have to say it twice?

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.

Hello, could someone recommend a reliable venue: on line or brick and mortar in Fairfax, VA or Long Island, NY to purchase the soft parts and a converter to restore my dad's Sheaffer Legacy? please. Thanks a mill.

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

I have a Conway Stewart Trafalgar set. It was previously owned by actor Russell Crowe and includes a letter from him. Can anyone help me with assessing its value?
