Snail Mail Writing List

Titivillus

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I was involved in this list back in 2015. Life got crazy but I am back in the FPN world again. I would love to write on any topic. I have background interests in sports, reading, theology, and politics.

I am married and 32 with one kiddo living in Springfield, MO.

Looking forward to the possibility of writing!

Regards,

David

Anyone here still looking for a penpal? I'd like to have some new ones.  I get a lot of lovely letters from my sister, but very few from my friends, who firmly believe in the electronic and social media which I tend to eschew.  This is generally not from a lack of writing effort on my part, but after consistently receiving few to no replies in print, I did eventually give up trying about 10 years ago.  I'd like to make another attempt, but this time with random yet perhaps highly motivated strangers on the internet. ;)

If you are interested feel free to PM me.  Likewise, if you want a drive-by mailing of your letterbox I am happy to oblige... I'm just not sure if anyone is still searching here after over a month of inactivity.

I'm not a very sporty guy, but I do like pohotography, history, geology (well, I collect minerals) and science very much. I'd like to exchange letters with you, if you want. Also, the Netherlands aren't far away, so letters will arrive preety quickly, I guess. If you're interested, send me a PM.

I have been in and out of the fountain pen hobby for almost ten years - and have also corresponded with a few lovely people I met on here. I would like to breathe new life into my letter writing and I am hoping for two or three people to write with.

I am 43, I live in the Netherlands and have a somewhat onorthodox family life: I live with my wife, her boyfriend, and in total three children (my wife and I have two together). Call it polyamory. If this offends you, please do not get in touch :) I work in education and I love films (see also: Letterboxd), literature and I can talk about almost anything except sports. I would be most interested in writing with people who are politically liberal and reflective. Also would be especially interested to correspond if you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

English and Dutch, no age preferences, I am particularly fond of nice inks and paper. Drop me a line! Also, If we have corresponded in the past but have lost contact, please get in touch if you like so we can pick up where we left off.

Hi, I'm Kari, 46, and  I've been married to the love of my life for 14 years.  I have three rescue dogs and one rescue cat. No kids.   Love to do anything artistic.   I make nail polish,  dye yarn,  do stained glass,  knit,  paint, electrical, make shelving,  etc..   There's not really much I'm afraid to do,  except jump out of a plane.   You'd have to set it on fire first !!! 😃

Outside of that, I owned my own yarn shop from 2019-2021, and am addicted to audiobooks.  I've challenged myself to listen to 300 books a year since 2017, and made it each year, so I'm pretty proud of that.  😃

I like being outside,  but doing chill things,  like going to the lake,  camping,  enjoying the porch swing,  or just pondering the meaning of life...  haha

My dream future would be a tiny home,  with a huge workshop on 50+ wooded acres.  I'd have ducks, sheep, goats, and rabbits and would work on creating a large garden to feed all of us !!! 😃

I used to love writing letters,  and had many penpals of all ages,  but alas,  everyone's gotten busy or lost touch...  there's just something gratifying about getting an actual letter vs a text or Facebook forward....

Hi there!

I'm Helen!  I'm a lady in my mid-40s (it hurts just writing that), and am just getting back into handwriting after too many years of digital communication.  My interests are so varied it is scary!  Right now I am into spinning yarn, knitting, gardening, and enjoying time with my husband and two cats.  I listen to lots of SciFi and Fantasy audiobooks and am actively working on improving my calligraphy which I left on the shelf for upwards of 12 years.  Needless to say, my hand has degraded and needs work!  I am also looking to get into pointed pen.  Someday I will move to Alaska to homestead with my brother and sister in law.  Oh, and I brew beer & make mead.  I'm not very up on current events or movies, but love to chat and tell stories.  I'd love to find a few people to exchange letters with.  Happy mail is the best mail!

Here's to new friends!

~ Helen

Speaking of snail mail, just curious...

are there any 'good' Internet sources? I am a very ecclectic sort of person and have always had problems finding the right match. As a youth, I used pen pal services all the time, and having the right match didn't seem so important then. When I got online some years back, one of my first exploration projects was finding some ink sparring partners. I looked hard. Most of the penpal type pages were for teens. I did find some specialty groups and actually found a person who was a good writing partner for over a year. Unfortunately, it was email writing.

Many of the lists I scoured were mostly non-descript listings with little information. When I meet someone in person, we usually have some sort of common link and, as I said, I'm so ecclectic in my interests, that just writing about the weather or what I want for Christmas doesn't satisfy me at all.

Are there any solid snail-mail-connection sites online?

Hi...  I don't know if you're still looking,  but check out an app called slowly.   It will let you look for pen pals by age, interests,  topics of conversation,  etc....  I've been able to convert two pen pals  to snail mail... my two favorites.  Hope that helps....

Hi, I'm Marlene.

I'm 43 and I love being in my 40s. It's so freeing not to have to give a (bleep) what anyone thinks of me or what I do/look like anymore. I've lost a little over 100 pounds, but I lost the weight mostly for my health. My dad died of heart failure and I don't want to do the same if I can help it.

I have a wonderful husband who has been working from home full time since Covid hit. I love having him home with me. I am disabled enough that working is very challenging for me so I choose to stay home for my own mental health. I also have two cats who I think of as my children.

I knit, and design and sell my own patterns. Not very many, but I'll take it! I read constantly; last year I read about a book a day. Mostly fantasy, but I like a good military science fiction series too. I read mostly books available through Kindle Unlimited because my habit would break the bank otherwise! Lol, books are expensive when you read as fast as I do.

I dabble in writing fiction. I'm good at it, but I lack the willpower to stick to a schedule and really do it. Maybe I can take one of my notebooks and use it for a book, since I'm trying to work on my handwriting and I have all this ink and new pens I need to use!

I'm interested in a wide variety of topics, too many to really list here, but don't know a lot about any of them. My life is pretty boring, and my handwriting is legible but awful (it's a work in progress). I'd love someone to write to.

Hello!

My name is Justin. I'm a 31 year old male living in Clarksville, Tn. I have masters degree in clinical mental health counseling, though I am not currently practicing.  I have a wonderful wife who just came out the other end of her battle with breast cancer, and a beautiful 4 year old daughter. I also have a fresh book of stamps, a nice sturdy desk, and a burning desire to justify buying a wax seal, so this thread is exactly what i was looking for.

A little about myself. I am a huge fan of science fiction, both books and movies or tv shows. I enjoy, cameras, watches, cars, and of course pens. I am not overly sports oriented, but I do play slow pitch softball for my church. I would be happy to write about any topic, although you may need to forgive my ignorance or pardon my delay while I research a topic.

If I sound like someone you would like to correspond with I promise to use pretty inks, nice paper, and respond every time :), hope to hear from someone soon!

Good Morning, Y'all,

My name is Michael. I am a 36 year old working and living in Houston Texas. My degrees are in philosophy and comparative literature (focusing on the American and British Romantics). Somehow, I wound up working in an engineering field in project management.

My interests are camping, reading, writing, bookbinding, game development, pickleball and tennis, and of course, pens! My favorite genres to read are Science Fiction and Fantasy, though I'm all over the board and read broadly. I love folk, country, blues, jazz, funk, classical, and heavy metal music. The last concert I saw was Dragonforce (they rocked.) My favorite poet is William Blake or Edward Field, my favorite serious author is Herman Melville, my favorite (alleged) philosopher is Ludwig Wittgenstein, and my favorite comic was Transmetropolitan. I play chess weekly, and weakly, and video games a couple times a year.

I'm looking to exchange letters on any topics that strike your interest, from philosophy to modern funk ensembles doing covers of classic pop and rock songs, literature (or prose masquerading as literature, trash is good for the soul after all), or no topic at all to give myself an excuse to ramble on the half-thoughts of the day and enjoy the surface patterns of your own thoughts.

Best,

Boris here. I am itching to write letters to someone, so I don't know. Hmm, a biography, huh? Let's go!

I am Boris, and while I am an infrequent, I would like to write letters. I have several fountain pens, with five of them having names. Those five are in a small group I call "Cult of Boris." I am not in school, though I do want to go to community college to improve my writing, but classes are online, and I don't know how I'd be able to do the online classes. I do have a job. Hooray! Hmm, interests.

I like to joke, and I like movies despite not watching them, and I do like video games despite not playing much. I don't often read and have some books collecting dust. I do like stuffed animals as well. Oh! I do like cats and wish I could adopt some. Duckies and chickies too! I do watch television sometimes, and I do like music as well. I'm not sure what to put here.

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

lamarax, thank you for a well-informed response! I've been worried that FountainPenHospital in NYC would suffer...

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 17:03
Hello @Jeffrey Sher, pen club information can be found in the Pen Clubs, Meetings, and Events sub forum. If you use Google site search you can find information specific to Israel.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:33
      Guess who loses
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I'm looking to repair some cheap pens that are starving for ink yet filled, and eventually get new nibs; and development of repair skills (an even longer learning curve than my art studies - lol). Every hobby needs a hobby, eh ...

    • JungleJim 1 Sept 1:55
Perhaps it's like saying Beetlejuice 3 times to get that person to appear, though with @Sailor Kenshin you only have to say it twice?

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
    • RegDiggins 23 July 12:40
Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen
