Snail Mail Writing List

Hello from NC!

I’m new and looking for a couple of pen pals to justify my growing pen and ink collection and perhaps share samples with. Do you like washi? 🤣

I’ve never handwritten letters to strangers, but, I’d like to try it out.

I’m very happy to discuss music, movies, the arts, daily life, food, photography, pets/animals (I have two cats, fish, and my pond out back is likely harboring a few hundred tadpoles), and, naturally all things FP related. I’m not terribly interested or versed in sports.

In my late 30s and have a intermediate grasp of German, and have recently also started studying Japanese (very, very beginner level). My husband claims I was muttering German in my sleep this morning and this made me quite proud of myself to be dreaming in another language.

Looking for lighthearted correspondences. I love laughing.

Hello there!  Your comment about dreaming in German made me laugh. When I was in High School French and dreamed in French it made me quite proud of myself too. If you are interested in corresponding (not in French!), PM me your address. I am in Colorado.

I wonder if anyone would care to correspond with me?

My name is Daniel, I'm a 22 year old writer and antiquarian from Great Britain.

My interests are many so I'll list just a few:

- Horology (my humble watch collection spans the last 300 years of watch making)
- Horticulture (I'm two years into bonsai)
- Literature (Lovecraft to Larkin, Wells to Wilde and many more besides)
- Classical music ( Wagner, Bruckner, R. Strauss...)
- History (too many topics to list)

And obviously fountain pens!

So if any of those have piqued your interest and you'd like to strike up a conversation, I'd love to hear from you in my PMs!

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum and have only recently revisited fountain pens. Needless to say I now have way more pens, inks and paper than I "need". I tried writing some snail mail to my physical friends but they just thought of it as cute and are not interested in writing back.

I would like to have some people to exchange correspondence with. As a background, I am 35 years old, work in medical research, have a lovely wife and 1 year old daughter, along with a 5 year old dog who thinks he's human, and we all live in southern MN.

Besides my obvious hobby for pens and stationery, I like biking (not that I get to do much with a baby now), reading novels or history books, listening to history, stationery or current news podcasts while performing boring tasks such as mowing the lawn or driving, and both my wife and I enjoy cooking.

I would like to refrain from any political and religious talk with whomever is interested in exchanging mail with me, as these two topics are the fastest way to sour relationships.

I really don't care where in the world my pen pal is located, as long as the letters I send arrive and we can communicate either in English or Spanish.

Send a PM if you are interested. Thank you!

Hello everyone!

I'm new to the forum and like everyone else here, I am looking for an excuse to use my pens more.

Im Anthony, I'm 28 and I live in Australia, and I'm the gay atheist they warned you about! I am a kind and complex person who has interests in Psychology - I have 2 degrees in psychology and I'm currently writing my thesis for my 3rd.| Reading - I am an avid fan of reading. I enjoy fantasy, and dystopian novels above all others. Raymond E Feist is undoubtebly my favourite author. Although presently I am enjoying Brandon Sanderson. | People in general - I love finding out what drives an individual, what fuels them with fire! People are never more powerful than when they are discussing their passions

I also enjoy the theatre, ballet, opera, tea, attempting to recreate tiktok recipes, and drinking more wine than I have any business drinking.

I'd love to find someone to correspond with, then I'll be having more than just eBay orders arrive in my letterbox!

Send me a PM :)

Hello! I'm Clare. I'm 37, I live in London. I've love a correspondent to play chess with (I dunno, it's just more fun on a postcard), someone who's just a bit better than I am (I am terrible) and maybe have a bit of a back and forth about life and culture all that good stuff. I like novels, poetry, cinema, current affairs, modern art, internet culture, falling unwisely in love and several hundred other things. Please DM me if you fancy it!

Hi all!

I'm also new to the forums, and am looking to get more use out of my many pens (and justify my magpie tendencies!).

I'm 31 and live in Australia; I'm a secondary teacher (mainly Psychology / English / Humanities), and love to read, listen to music, complete puzzles, and learn languages (currently Arabic and Japanese).

I'm a big fan of fantasy novels, as well as historical fiction and non-fiction; I'm currently re-reading some of my favourite Bernard Cornwall books, and am definitely counting the hours until school holidays start so I can read some more! I'm also generally on the quest for more knowledge, and am forever finding new things to study. I'll start my Masters in a few weeks, so hopefully that will sort me out for awhile!

My husband and I had plans to move to Japan permanently last year, but that clearly has not gone to plan! Will hopefully be able to revisist that desire when things settle (fingers crossed), but in the meantime I'm kind of glad I didn't have to figure out moving the cats for a little while longer!

I'd love to correspond with anyone willing - it's always exciting to have something non bill-related in the mail!

Please send me a PM if you're keen!

Hello,

I am so happy to see so many young people wanting to write letters.  I teach ELA in middle school, have two sight hounds from Spain, love to sew (with a machine, I can't hand sew), read a lot, and at the getting older age of 58, would love to correspond about daily life, books, music, sci fi, mystery novels, leftist politics, education, dogs, poetry, gardening, fountain pens, bikes...anything!  Any excuse to write and socialize.  Show off your inks and tell me all about your pens.

Send me a message if you would like to correspond.

Hello All,

I have recently returned to FPN, and back into the fountain pen collecting.  I thought writing and using my stash of pen and inks would be better served corresponding with PenPals, as I have taken an early retirement.   I have also started a bit of amateur pen repairs and learning as I go.  I am open to talking about anything from your dogs, cats, kids, favorite music, whatever comes to mind.  Also, I love to see doodles, and everyone’s handwriting is interesting to me.  If you would like to correspond please send me a message.  I am open to PenPal’s all over the world.

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.
    • Claes 17 Apr 8:19

    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 22:48
@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

lamarax, thank you for a well-informed response! I've been worried that FountainPenHospital in NYC would suffer...
    • bhavini 15 Apr 18:28
What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 17:03
Hello @Jeffrey Sher, pen club information can be found in the Pen Clubs, Meetings, and Events sub forum. If you use Google site search you can find information specific to Israel.

    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:58
It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:33
      Guess who loses
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

    • lamarax 2 Mar 20:38
Oh well. In case of failure you can always wring the paper to have a nice -albeit somewhat stale- cup of coffee back.
    • T.D. Rabbit 2 Mar 10:20
@Astronymus I could use cornstarch... Or i could distill it and make it very concentrated.
    • T.D. Rabbit 2 Mar 10:20

    • lamarax 17 Feb 18:05
Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.
    • Astronymus 17 Feb 16:19
YOu might need to thicken the coffee with something. I admit I have no idea with what. But I'm pretty sure it would work.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27
I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

I haven't been here for ages... do I take it that private sales are no longer allowed? Also used to be a great place to sell and buy some great pens

      Lol…
    • JungleJim 1 Sept 1:55
Perhaps it's like saying Beetlejuice 3 times to get that person to appear, though with @Sailor Kenshin you only have to say it twice?

I have no ties or relationship. Just a very happy customer. He is a very experienced Montblanc expert.

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.

Hello, could someone recommend a reliable venue: on line or brick and mortar in Fairfax, VA or Long Island, NY to purchase the soft parts and a converter to restore my dad's Sheaffer Legacy? please. Thanks a mill.

Back to FPN after 14 years. First thing I noticed is that I could not see a FS forum. What has changed? 🤔

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

I have a Conway Stewart Trafalgar set. It was previously owned by actor Russell Crowe and includes a letter from him. Can anyone help me with assessing its value?
