Snail Mail Writing List

Titivillus

Recommended Posts

I've entertained the idea of finding a pen pal for quite awhile and never follow through. Today is new pen day for me, so I'm motivated to create some reasons to use it (Vanishing Point). I became interested in fountain pens a few years ago, but as a kid I always had a love for pens, paper, and writing. I'm male, 31 years old, married with four (yep, four!) cats and a puppy. We live in Texas. I'm originally from upstate NY, and after I graduated with my degree in English, I moved to Texas to pursue a Master's degree. That fizzled out, and now I work in procurement. My hobbies include pens and writing (obviously), astronomy, photography, running (though currently injured), reading, and mountain biking. I'm not religious and I'm situated on the left of the political spectrum. Although I'm not religious, I'm fascinated by religion and am open to discussion. Same goes for politics - open to discussion. But I won't steer any discussions in that direction unless there's mutual interest.

If interested in corresponding, let me know!

I've been using basic start ftn pens for about 3 years and I'm learning each day, but I am still very much a newbie. This is my first year participating in InCoWriMo- it's the perfect reason to use all my lovely ink. I've managed to keep up so far, but I am quickly running out of people to write!

I'm a huge paper and ink nerd. I attended to an art high school then studied photography in college. I love all things paper-related- snail mail, postcards, scrapbooking, planning, etc. It's only natural that I fell into fountain pens and ink. But 2017 was a terrible year for me mail-wise; I somehow lost three pen pals. I wrote several one-way letters before I just decided to give up.

My other hobbies include fiber arts (knit/crochet/sewing), photography, cooking (and eating), the occasional video game (time is much harder to come by as an adult), being a netflix bum, and travel/exploring new places.

I'm currently unemployed by choice- I left a career of 7 years to study a new skill and hopefully change industries.

I'd love to have more people to write to, especially since I enjoy sending postcards when I travel.

Mr. Pink here needs at least one more pen-pal if he expects to ever use up his stock of ink in the next 48 years. That I don't own a cell phone should tell you nearly everything you need to know about me.

Just so you know, if you do take me on, I write very regularly.

Male or Female is just fine.

I understand that this form is basically about members corresponding with each other, but like many others who don't have a lot of time for correspondents I just wanna pass along that there are several very reputable sites that offer the opportunity for people such as our shelves, and anyone else actually, to correspond with people that are incarcerated, almost all of whom would be very glad to have another voice to communicate with. And while there are issues of reputability, at least in terms of who the individual is that you're communicating with, (but then this could be true of anyone you meet anywhere)I will say that there is a potential for really doing someone some good just by offering them another source of communication, along with giving you a chance to practice your handwriting.

Just add an F at the beginning, and any Art stinks.

I'm a 26 years old woman from Northern-East Italy.

I come from a rural, big family and I live in the countryside.

I've recently graduated from a Master's degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures. I'm a huge nerd, I love superhero movies and television shows, science-fiction, fantasy, Westerns, music from dubstep to gothic choir, too many authors to count, ink comparisons, typography, sight-seeing, architecture, and, truly, I have many interests. I'm sure we'll find something to write about.

If you don't feel disparaged by the age gap, consider writing to me!

Hi you probably have more pen pals than you want now. In the slim chance that you don't I would love to correspond with you. I'm a fellow left leaning Texan which as you know is a very rare breed. I love art, literature, philosophy, stupid puns, absurd humor and just about everything that makes us human.

Love all, trust a few, do harm to none. Shakespeare

I'm middle-aged, sarcastic, cynical, messy and disorganized. I am married but have no children. I'm down-to-earth and pretty opinionated, though not confrontational about it; I refrain from political, religious, and most 'hot button' debates unless you're sitting in my living room ;)

I enjoy fiber art pursuits, such as spinning, weaving, knitting, lacemaking, crazy quilting, embroidery... pretty much anything involving fiber, yarn, fabric, or thread. I love animals, but I'm especially biased toward the fiber producing kind - sheep, goats, llama, alpaca and such. :) I love (and have several) dogs and cats as well. I don't read as much as I used to (in the stone age, Before Internet) but I try to compensate by listening to audiobooks while doing other things. A few of my favorite authors are Jonathan Kellerman, Jim Butcher (Dresden series!), and James Patterson. I read mostly fiction in the thriller/mystery genre, although a few sci-fi and fantasy things have wandered onto my radar of late. I have the attention span of a gnat most of the time, and generally have numerous projects going on at any particular moment.

I've had a thing for paper and pens since I can remember! I am learning Copperplate, albeit very slowly (with long breaks between attempts), and I love fountain pens and dip pens. I've recently started experimenting with making my own (very amateurish) ink for dip pens, just for fun. I'd like to learn Italic and Foundational calligraphy... and Humanist... and... hmm, so many choices! I'm also working on establishing a style of everyday handwriting that I like better than the random-cursive-mixed-with-print-lettercase-be-damned mess I currently default to. It's legible, but it ain't pretty.

I live in the southeast United States but would love to talk to folks from other countries. I have to say I'm not terribly punctual when it comes to letters, but I get there eventually. I'd like to communicate with open-minded, non-judgemental people with a good sense of humor :)

Looking for a way to put my pens into use. And making some new friends from over the world would be a wonderful opportunity, wouldn't it?

According to my friends I have a strong opinion in a sarcastic an humurous way of, let's say, almost everything. Which does not mean that I'm not open to other opinions or discussions.

Willing to write about daily life; and actually about everyting as long as for instance politics and religion are not to fanatic.

Current interests: fountain pens and inks, music (very broad interest but with a preference for the (electrical) guitar), enjoying a good meal and drink (Whisky), taking the motorcycle for an evening ride, running, trying to get the most out of my life on a daily basis.

Long term relationschip but no children.

Mother tongue: Dutch, fluent in French en (let's hope so) English and once upon a time there was supposed to be German...

If someone is interested, I'm looking forward to get in touch...

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 22:48
@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

lamarax, thank you for a well-informed response! I've been worried that FountainPenHospital in NYC would suffer...
    • bhavini 15 Apr 18:28
What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 17:03
Hello @Jeffrey Sher, pen club information can be found in the Pen Clubs, Meetings, and Events sub forum. If you use Google site search you can find information specific to Israel.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

    • lamarax 2 Mar 20:38
Oh well. In case of failure you can always wring the paper to have a nice -albeit somewhat stale- cup of coffee back.
    • T.D. Rabbit 2 Mar 10:20
@Astronymus I could use cornstarch... Or i could distill it and make it very concentrated.
    • T.D. Rabbit 2 Mar 10:20
@lamarax That's what I used! (In reply to black coffee).. But the milk might not be good at all for paper.

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

    • FineFinerFinest 24 Oct 8:52
No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27
I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I'm looking to repair some cheap pens that are starving for ink yet filled, and eventually get new nibs; and development of repair skills (an even longer learning curve than my art studies - lol). Hello, could someone recommend a reliable venue: on line or brick and mortar in Fairfax, VA or Long Island, NY to purchase the soft parts and a converter to restore my dad's Sheaffer Legacy? please. Thanks a mill.

Back to FPN after 14 years. First thing I noticed is that I could not see a FS forum. What has changed? 🤔

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

I have a Conway Stewart Trafalgar set. It was previously owned by actor Russell Crowe and includes a letter from him. Can anyone help me with assessing its value?
