Very nice! I'm liking the white one, and I second the suggestion for some non-transparent options.

Some great names have been suggested. I'm partial to Alpha and Neo.

Or maybe Gateway.

The White one is a hit with me too, it looks great. My only concern is the step from the barrel to the section.

I'd be in line to buy this one too! I like the way the TWSBI looks but the price is way out of my range. This is a great alternative. :)

I like the names Carbon or matrix as a play on the other TWSBI lines.

Next pen on the project run down is this "economic model", code PP017

Target is to create a pen of retail price between US$25-30; a price that can be more attractive to new fountain pen user, high school student...

Consoliate many plastic barrel parts into one, use less or smaller metal parts to save the cost. It end up with 4 new plastic parts; Cap, Inner Cap, Barrel, and Screw End Plug.

Our RD done this design in two days work. Yor are welcome to comment or give suggestion. You can start by giving it a good name.

Sorry that I don't know how to insert photo anymore?? and Skitch is no longer useable as before

How can I request to increase my upload quota??

I prefer the TWSBI Diamond 540 with the stub nib but I haven't been successful in getting one yet. They aren't available in the UK and while I was in the US everyone was out of stock and waiting for new stock to come in.

To add photos you need to delete all of your old ones in Classifieds or posts and threads to make enough space then add them as attachments at the bottom of your original post.

Nice design. :)

In my eyes it definitely belongs to the diamond family so I would call it TWSBI Diamond 270 (=540/2) or Diamond 1080 (=540x2) or another number that makes (or doesn't make) sense.

I for one am not a big fan of the pen. I'll explain why, not because I don't like it, but because I have a lot a respect for what Speedy is doing.

If the pen is designed for beginners, I am not so sure that the piston is a "must be". As a student, c/c seems more convenient, and if a college student is aiming at a higher end, piston filler pen, there is the 540. A student FP can survive only if it's widley commissoned by schools where the use of a FP is still mandatory (or a very big market, obviously). but that's how Lamy and Pelikan makes most of their coney (and Caran d'Ache with their BP in Switzerland). I am not sure a school will ever commissoned a pitons filler: too messy.

My second comment is toward the step and the grip. I dont remember any beginner's pen or student's pen with such a step, mostly because, unless students are teached the tripod grip, it's very likely to be annoying, or even leading to small hurtings. This is esp. true since your grip is not shaped to encourage the tripod grip.

Finaly, I question the twist cap. I understand that most pen afficionaos do prefer twist caps, and this is great to give an option. But then again, in taking notes, it's pretty impotant to be able to use the pen readily, and there, the clic cap is a better bet IMHO. And bear n mind that it's unlikly that students interessted by such a pen will use it for years and years (I don't have my first, or second Pelikano). Clip cap are very nice mst of the time, and my old Maestro, after 20ish yeras, is just begining to be not so secure...

I hope you are not hurt by my comment. I just hope that a comment from "the other side of TWSBI" will help you leading your project to the end you aim for.

How about the TWSBI "Etude"?

Etude means "study" in French and in music refers to short musical pieces designed for practice to improve musical skill.

I love the pen, Speedy! This was the type of innovation and product sensibility that inspired me to interview TWSBI (http://penanddesign.blogspot.com/2012/08/pen-interview-philip-wang-of-twsbi.html), and has kept me waiting anxiously for the Mini

But Speedy, I have a concern: the metal band on the cap of the TWSBI pens seems to have nickel - which makes my hand rage with rash (I have a nickel allergy.) Is this a concern you plan to remedy with the release of the Mini, or this pen? Furthermore, can this pen post well? I figure that students and first-time FP users would appreciate a cap (as would I, among others.) I also have a name to suggest, though. How about the TWSBI Xie? The Write!

I'd love to have the metal parts on a TWSBI replaced with non-nickel parts, or to even be able to own a custom TWSBI without such additions. Either way though, as long as this pen is released in a demo and smoke demo, I think I'll be buying one. I look forward to hearing of its production timeframe.

I have a slightly weird idea that I have decided to share anyway.

You specify a high school student but I would be interested in buying something like this for my much younger nephews. One thing you could do to make the pen better for that age range is a locking piston. For example, if the center of the end cap had a hole in it and the end of the piston rod had a threaded hole in the end of it, a small screw could be inserted to lock the piston in place. This would prevent accidental (or not so accidental) ink fights.

Update on 2010/10/06

Base on feedback we received in these two days, we update the design as below

1. Cancel the metal rings in section and screw cap area, to prevent possible corrosion in the future. The one on screw cap is due to balance to the front...

2. Change the end cap design, so the cap can be posted. O-ring on end of the barrel to hold the cap when post..

Speedy,

While the new revision gives a bit more functionality, IMHO the overall look makes it seem $5 cheaper than the original design.

No, I am not going to list my pens here.

I agree with Seele. For some reason, this revised version makes it look cheaper. I can't put my finger on exactly why, but it does.

I agree, there's just something about the revision that doesn't sit right with me. The previous version seemed like it had more pleasing, cleaner lines. This seems to have more angles, especially on the new posting bit. I think the different material used in the end makes it look like cheap plastic. Perhaps making it all one uniform material, like it was before?

Speedy this is great news.

Both designs are beautiful. The band at the end of the barrel gives distinction, I also think it is better. If after some years it corrodes, well just buy another.

I love the idea that TWSBI came back to the track of the econo/value pen. Personally I would buy several indifferent colours (don't dismiss the ruby demonstrator, pure red).

One thing I recommend you should minimise is the step. One way could be to increase the section diameter as much as you can make it fit in the cap.

Love the idea, congratulations.

I agree. I've just received 2 540's that I love - stunning pens and great value. I think the original design for this pen was far superior and I was really looking forward to it. I wouldn't buy this one as I think it looks cheap.

Existing metal ring on grip zone of our fountain pens will be replaced by stainless steel in the future.

Related to the Name; since this is a Student pen, why not call it a Twsbi Prom, in dedication for when a student graduates with a a party at the end of the Sr. School year! thumbup.gif
