Which Inks Are You Using Today?

My two favorite inks for winter:  Kyo-Iro Soft Snow of Ohara (in my Sailor 1911S Wicked Witch of the West M) and J Herbin Amethyste de l'Oural (in my Shaeffer Viewpoints calligraphy F from the 1990s).

Soft Snow is a good match for the color of the Sailor pen, a misty, blue-leaning purple.

Amethyste de l'Oural I use in winter because it is ostensibly a shimmer ink, but even in my broadest nib and on Tomoe River, I never see shimmer.   It's just a nice purple ink.

I also still have a tiny bit of Pilot Black remaining in my Pilot XF desk pen.  I look forward to exhausting the fill.  The only reason I have been using Pilot Black is that my previous cartridge broke, and the only other Pilot cartridge I had in the house was the one that came with my daughter's Pilot Metropolitan.  I am one of those people who never discard partial fills out of mere boredom, so I have been working through the ink that came in the cartridge before refilling it.

I have always liked Diamine Ancient Copper mostly for its nominal color, but today I am using it for the first time on slick (Tomoe River) paper, with a somewhat wet, broad nib, and I am finding that it has some beautiful shading! I suppose most folks who know Ancient Copper know already that it can shade a lot, but its shading potential is a new discovery for me.

It's like discovering a new quality in an old friend.

Just ordered a bottle of Ancient Copper - reading this makes me more excited than ever to receive it! :)

Ancient Copper is one of my favorite inks.

The ink is to me a lovely color, and it normally behaves well, but as some have pointed out in these pages, I have also observed rarely the tendency of Ancient Copper to crust over a bit in pens that aren’t well sealed or otherwise tend to dry out. It might also be a batch-related or ambient environment thing, because the ink from my bottle in my desk in the the US has never given me a problem even after a couple of months of storage, while ink out of the bottle in my German desk has crusted over a couple times after the (same) pen has lain idle for a few weeks (the pen in question is a Lamy Studio that in general tends to dry out faster than average when not in regular use).

The crusty stuff re-dissolves and cleans up pretty easily, but the dried crud is sort of ugly when it appears, and is a bit alarming  when experienced for the first time (only happened to me twice in almost three years).

I have otherwise never had an issue with the ink, and as the name implies, it will form several coppery shades of somewhat reddish brown, from a dark brown-black bronze-like color to bright red-orange-brown similar to pure copper.

enjoy it!

As a new member of FPN, it's beyond wonderful to hear folks talk as enthusiastically about pens and inks as you do about this one! What a lovely thing when we find a pen or ink that really clicks and that gives us joy to use. :D

I'm sure I can handle the occasional crusting - a small price to pay for a beautiful ink!

Today it's been (at least so far):

1. Iroshizuku Yama-budo, in my Christmas present pen -- Pilot Decimo (dark blue, stub nib).

2. diluted Noodler's Heart of Darkness, in the Noodler's Konrad (Poseidon Pearl, flex nib).

3. Noodler's Baltimore Canyon Blue, in the TSWBI 580-AL (pink, B nib).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

It seems we are on the same page with respect to Diamine Ancient Copper. Please come back after you have had a chance to try it and let us know what you think!

However, as one spends more time here on FPN, one sometimes finds that the pen, ink, paper that sing to him or her like a symphony orchestra, are like fingernails on a chalkboard to someone else (and some others even like the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard). It is part of the charm here. There are lots of tastes and almost always something new to learn.

Krishna Monsoon Sky, which is NOT behaving nicely for me. I can't decide if the problem is ink, nib (don't think it's the nib) paper or feed, but I'm not happy about it - it's the loveliest colour and I wanted it to be a perfect match. I need to do some elimination and really don't have time right now.

Graf von Faber-Castell Gulf Blue in a Retro 51xGoldspot Blue Lagoon Ombré with a 1.1 stub nib. Both were Christmas gifts. I’m enjoying them a lot.

Diamine Winter Miracle. Actually used a complete fill over the last week and did a refill.  No flushing.  Montblanc’s are fine not having a flush every fill. 🥰

Finally got the converter from Pen Boutique for a new-to-me Waterman C/F (thank you, slow post office).

Just loaded it up with Serenity Blue - it seemed appropriate - and it writes like a dream.

Indeed. I've always enjoyed the Kobe inks, 50 ml bottle, and affordable price. Though it seems they're harder to find how. Vanness used to be always stocked and now they're out of everything. Don't know if that's just a manufacturing or shipping issue, or something else, as the Kobe shop in Japan lists all their inks for the standard ¥1980.

Kobe #9 is my favorite ink.

The Maido shop in San Francisco usually carries some of the Kobe inks.  I haven't been there lately, so I don't know what their stock is now.
