Which Inks Are You Using Today?

Jacques Herbin 1670 Bleu Ocean in my Pilot Parallel 6mm on my Graphic Journal gilt edged, cream, lined paper.

I think 75% of my fountain pen use is just me working things out in my journal. Deadly dull to any reader, but it spares those around me from quite a lot of egocentric prattle. (Not all, as you can plainly see.) At least it looks pretty.

Today it's been:

Some unknown, diluted/reconstituted ink in one of the Parker 45s I picked up recently -- likely Quink Blue.

Akkerman Ijzer-Galnoten, in one of the Parker Vectors.

Sailor Jentle Sky High (old version) in the new Sailor Pro-Gear Slim Purple Cosmos -- but I'm wondering if the ink is a little *too* wet for the zoom nib, because I'm not getting a lot of line variation unless I hold the pen almost perpendicular to the paper, or write upside down....

ETA: Adding another one to the list -- Noodler's Heart of Darkness, in the Cobalt Creaper.

Today was an office work day, so mostly Souboku. Hoping to spend some time being creative this evening and that will probably be Syo-ro or yodokai.

Yet another Sarah.

Last night was Yama-dori, which I hadn't used in forever. Haven't decided on tonight's yet.

Tonight I'm using the very last of my El Lawrence sample and the very last of my Whaleman's Sepia Sample... and anything else that's in the pens.

My ink finally cleared customs today. 11 DAYS in customs!!! If I'm very, very lucky, and the ink gods smile upon me, it might arrive in the post box tomorrow. I'm excited about my bottle of Noodler's Manjiro Nakahama Whaleman's Sepia. I loved the sample! I'm going to give all my pens a good clean and fill them up just as soon as it arrives.

The plan for tonight is to write until all my pens, but one, are empty. The one being an emergency, back up pen.

Let us know if you find a pen that Whaleman's Sepia works in. Because I couldn't get the ink to flow to save my life. Quite disappointing, since it's a really interesting color -- at least my sample of it was....

I'm finding my sample of Whaleman a bit wet. It's better with water added, but then it feathers a bit.

I have hope that the stuff in the bottle will be dryer.

At least I think I have the right word. Wet - flows out of the pen quickly and makes the line thicker? Dry - comes out of the pen hesitantly?

OMG Ponies! Thanks Northstar!

Todays ink is my first fill of my new Jacques Herbin 1798 Cornaline dEgypte. Im not normally that into orange ink, but Im a completest collector by nature and Ive already got the rest of the set. Its not logical or practical. I get that.

Ive inked it in my Pilot Parallel 6mm hoping to give it a maximum chance to shine. Good shading, nice sheen, subtle sparkle (I think the feed catches about half the metallic particles) and a muddy kinda vintage orange color. Unless I save all my letters for Halloween, this ink isnt in danger of being used up anytime soon.

My ink arrived. I can't believe how long it got stuck in customs... but I should have expected it. I forgot that our duty-free limit is $20 Canadian when shopping from the USA. I think they inspected the ink because it wasn't as full as normal and there's a bit of dry ink on the outside of the bottle. Very good of customs to make sure my ink was safe... but a whole pen's worth of ink to sample... suspicious?

But IT IS HERE!

Two bottles of Black Swan in English and a giant bottle of Nakahama. I swapped out the nib in the Charlie pen for an extra fine. Filled it with Nakahama and now I'm waiting for the feed to saturate. I wonder if it's ready?

Thursday night, I took Lamy Petrol to work but ended up not using it so I used it last night.

Noodlers Purple Heart, an American Eel ink thats exclusive to Goulet Pens. Its in my Montblanc Bordeaux 146 with a medium nib. I like my pens to match my ink. I like this ink quite a bit more on cream than white paper. The color is a bit meh, but the flow and smoothness are lovely. This very vanilla pen seems to barely sip ink and goes for miles between fills, so Id better like this ink.

Am I the only one who has trouble wasting ink? I always feel the need to write the reservoir totally empty before changing ink. God knows why, with 200 bottles, its not like Im going to run out in my lifetime.

Lamy blue, Pelikan royal blue, Pelikan blue-black and, most unexpectedly, R&K Scabiosa - my local stationery store swapped their line of Standardgraph inks out for Rohrer & Klingner and J. Herbin while I wasn't looking, which was a delightful surprise. Never cared much for the latter after I ran into a bunch of varied and interesting issues, but having R&K inks easily available is an inky dream come true.

As for the ink - pen match-ups:

Lamy blue in a new pastel blue Lamy Safari; F nib.

Pelikan royal blue in a White Tortoiseshell M 400; F nib.

Pelikan blue-black in a Mentmore Autoflow buttonfiller (M nib), a Geha 780 (F nib, presumably), and a Sheaffer Imperial (M nib).

R&K Scabiosa in a Jinhao x450 with a nice crisp Italic nib and also a dip pen using a Zebra G nib.

I haven't used Lamy blue much since grade school, and while the aforementioned grade school left me with a grudge against blue inks in general, I noticed that I still vastly prefer Lamy blue over Pelikan blue.

Pelikan blue-black is my standard ink and an all-time favorite, but Scabiosa, from my very limited trials so far, seems just about as good, and it's nice to have a somewhat more colorful alternative.

That looks just awesome. Magic with fountain pen and ink.

Today I have my pens (MB 149, 146, M200 and Custom 912 FA) filled with

Montblanc: Midnight Blue, Burgundy Red, and Corn Poppy Red.

Oh forgot, and MB Royal Blue in the FA

Your PFM make we want to take my Legacy Heritage around the block. Love the Sheaffer inlaid nibs.

Majiro Nakaham Whaleman's sepia today... and probably every day for a long time.

I'm that way too. But I write a lot so it's easy to go through a couple of regular converter fills a day these days. I'm loving how much ink an eyedropper can hold!

(edit to add: sorry, the image got a bit pixilated somehow. I have to make it smaller to post here and I don't know a good way to do that yet. But it gives you the general idea of how the ink is behaving. Also, it would probably help if I had lined paper underneath that sheet. Something for next time.)

After a couple of leaks, I gave up on eyedroppers. Ive since read that a little silicone grease solves this problem. What do you use?

Today, my Pelikan M1000 with customized italic OB3 Nib is filled with R&K Alt Goldgrun ink. Writes like silk on silk. I love this ink, sadly my journals cream paper hides most of the shading.

I'm just getting to know eyedroppers. I'm using a couple of charlies and some preppy pens for keeping in my bag and at work. For the preppy I'm using both silicone and an o-ring. The charlie didn't come with an o-ring, so I'm just coating it with silicone every fifth or so fill. I don't know if this is the right way, but so far it's working... except on one highlighter pen, but that might be the ink.

Speaking of ink. I'm going to try to get through the last of my El Lawrence sample tonight. Had a bit of a hard day so I don't know how much writing I can get done.
