Uh... spend less on pens in 2007? What kind of a stupid resolution was THAT? I couldn't resist... Waterman Man Night & Day in gold overlay on black, so you see these very thin black stripes showing through the gold...

Unfortunately is has a VERY broad B nib & has to fly off for a nib exchange. Does anyone else have a Man? I didn't even know this particular model existed until I accidentally ran across it on sale on the internet.

Hi Petra,

I have a Man 100 sized Patrician in coral red. An absolutely stunning pen! It's bigger than the night & day type you purchased, which I believe is based on the smaller Man 200 model. I have mine in M nib and it's a pure joy to use - smooth as anything and beautifully made. Waterman must have been insane to have stopped making this pen.

Petra,

By coincidence, I got the Silver version in the mail yesterday. I don't usually get involved with modern Watermans, but these are quite nice. Here's a pic of mine:

Like yours, mine has the very broad "L" nib and writes a huge, wet line. Over at Pentrace on the Market Board, DocNib is offering some NOS Waterman nibs and sections for sale that would fit your pen. You might want to take a look. He may have posted them here on FPN also, but I didn't check.

Congrats and enjoy your new pen.

I'm lucky to have the Man 200 Night & Day in silver as an FP with a dryish F nib and in gold as an RB. They are substantial and beautifull. The gold version is really stunning, it looks very precious. :)9

The Man 200 Night & Days were a kind of Special Edition in the 90s.

oooh, the silver looks great too! Lucky us! :) If I can't get a nib exchange from Waterman, I think I'll send mine off for italic or stub customization.

I saw the Exception w/ Platinum at the Ohio pen pen show, it was just stunning, so I think when I'm ready for the "night" it'll be that one... (oops -- I mean, NO, no more pens for me for a long while!)

Enjoy your pen!

How weird is that?

I decided to pull out my Waterman Night and Day (i generally do not polish silver patina), and it looks somehow...different... from yours :roflmho:

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello,

I have a LeMan 200 (black resin), from the early 1990's. I picked it up a few weeks back after it sat, unused, for probably ten years or so. I did not even think to check the cartridge or converter inside, but just lightly drew it across a piece of white paper. It almost immediately started writing beautifully, and continues to do so after much use each day and after a couple of refillings with different types of ink. The pen is simply amazing, and unbelievably smooth (medium nib)! I, too, lament that Waterman stopped making this line of pen (both 100 and 200 series), which has inspired me (and my daughter, as well) to take up the art of fine writing once again. It seems to me that the LeMan series might have achieved the iconic status that Waterman seems to lack, perhaps due to its habit of cycling through its "flagship" pen lines every decade or so.

Cheers

David,

What's that funny-looking silver bar with a circle at the end doing on the barrel?

There is nothing wrong in changing pen models, but the Man should certainly have stayed. In fairness, it did look a little old fashioned, and the Edson is a much more modern looking pen, as is the new Exception.

I agree the Man does have the look of a certain era... I'm looking at myWaterman pens-in-a-row: the CF models, Man, Carene, Edson and Exception and even my little Ici et La & Lady Charlotte -- and I really enjoy being able to see the relationships and design development of these pens.

I didn't set out to collect Waterman pens -- it's just that every time I got one, I was impressed with the quality, reliability and good looks. And even though the Serenite is not my cup of tea, I like it too!

I'm really looking forward to seeing what's next!

Petra,

I have been bitten by the same bug. Years ago, I had mostly Mont Blancs, then got the above-mentioned Waterman LeMan 200, and have since acquired another LeMan and a couple of Carene models. The LeMans and Carenes are so very different, yet they work so well and bring a smile to my face every time I use them. They make writing a joy, and, having had such good fortune with the brand (and in light of the wide variety of model types), I will probably just keep getting them.

It certainly does not work for everyone, but something about the heft conveyed by the brass linings conveys a feeling of solidity, high quality and presence.
