Yep. I find it a very useful and intuitive program to use for applications and projects like this one. You can work with just a handful of size specifications (here the wood thickness and width of the flooring that would be used), easily manipulate the geometry, and measure everything exactly when you're done. And it's free

Very nice. I would imagine you used something else to render the lighting, material effects, and trees? Or

is that a feature of the professional version of Sketchup?

 

On topic: My friend says she'll have the rack done by today. I'll take photos and edit them into this post after I pick it up this afternoon.

Perfect size for my current collection with a little room for expansion, and it is a good size for my desk.

Indeed she did.

 

I'm in my first year at college studying to be a mechanical engineer, so I guess I could be considered a designer in training . I've had a knack for and interest in designing things since my first LEGO brick sets as a kid, however .

 

My friend is a senior in high school and has some experience with wood working from both personal projects as well as from jobs (I presume related to construction) that I think she said her father has had her help with.

 

A few months ago I "converted" her to using fountain pens as an expansion to her already present enthusiasm for office supplies (kind of how I started out.) I got her a Pilot Varsity and a bottle of Pelikan Brilliant Black with a syringe to start, and she just got herself a green Platinum Preppy and a bottle of Pelikan Brilliant Green (green being her favorite color.) I told her about a pen I was looking at getting for myself (a Nemosine Singularity) and she said she'd get it for me as a birthday gift she still "owed" me - which I thought was very kind of her.

 

Today when I picked up the ink rack from her house she told me she'd give the pen to me for Christmas, and, since it wasn't going to be a surprise for me, I told her I would give her a Jade Noodler's Ahab (I received in a recent trade) to her for Christmas.

I use Maxwell Render for lights and rendering. Materials and trees are all Sketchup.

 

 

Nice wood display rack. Like the way it went from concept to final product.

One day I will have a lot of inks to display but I'm a beginner. As I have beginner inks and only three inkwells, I will take a better picture later.

No, actually the "casket" is a smallish box with a curved lid (if you ever took any art history or architecture classes, think "barrel vault" for the shape of the lid). I think that it's made of some sort of heavy-weight cardboard or paperboard (according to a friend of mine, whose ex-boyfriend is Canadian, there's actually a difference between those two terms). The box is covered with some sort of fuzzy purple and gold fabric. I got it in a Yankee swap gift exchange at something I was at last winter; it originally contained bags of loose leaf tea and a package of homemade candied orange peel, which was just a bonus -- I wanted the box! And so did a fair number of other people -- it was one of the more popular items to steal.

Of course it has long since outgrown the ink stash (and was always too short to put a vial sample tray into). Right now it's got a few bottles of ink (mostly small ones, like Pharmacist's IG inks), leftover Parker cartridges and some emptied ones, plus some random paraphernalia like extra nibs and silicone grease.

I suppose that until i find the ideal storage unit, I could always use the rather larger box that it was put in before wrapping. I saved it as "well it's too nice a box to just throw out" and it's been sitting on the coffee table in the living room since January. I don't think everything will go it it, but I think it might be tall enough for the larger Noodler's bottles, or at least the two ink vial trays if I stack them. I think (looking at it without actually measuring it) that it's about 10-12" square by about 5-6" high.

And it only has a little masking tape on the lid, so it looks okay (it's a pretty sort of silver gray color).

I love the glass fronted book case. When my collection of ink grows a bit more I may have to displace some books and put my ink on display. For now it is contained in my 19th century Japanese clerk's/storekeeper's box that seems like it was made for the job. It is portable and goes well with the rest of the Japanese art in my office. I am quickly running out of room in it however and must either stop buying ink or find another container. Here are a few pics:

Thank you! It had been one of the windows in my old house. When previous owners (2 owners ago) added on another small room, they left the window. LOL As it was, it was useless, so I decided to transform it into my ink display. I've nearly run out of room, though, so I'm seriously considering transforming another window.
