Amazon And Noodler's Inks

Recommended Posts

So I was browsing amazon for Noodler's ink (was looking for highlighter ink) and nearly fell off of my chair. I've bought quite a few bottles off of amazon (love amazon prime) but the prices were ridiculous. A standard bottle of Noodler's (non bulletproof) is over $16 (prime shipping) when it used to be $12.50. A bottle of bad belted kingfisher is $29.99! http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0033BWC4A/ref=mp_s_a_15?pi=SL75&qid=1346773072&sr=8-15

Is the price of Noodler's ink going up or are there just greedy people selling on amazon? I'm not looking for recommendations on where to buy or anything like that, just curious as to people's thoughts.

I'd noticed that too. :(

I was real sad that a couple of days ago, I didn't jump on the 4.5 ounce of HoD since it was down to $15.00 (with pen) and now it's back up to $21.00.

I was APPALLED by the Bad Belted Kingfisher!

I hadn't looked at the trends yet, but I hope the ink prices stabilize.

You have to check frequently, the prices vary a lot. Could be due to different sellers, or specials they may be having. You can get some pretty good (or bad) deals.

No offense, but why are you even shopping for Noodler's inks on Amazon? Why not just buy them from the Goulets or from isellpens? (Or, for the exclusive colors, at the places that sell them?)

I'm not sure about the OP, but I had Amazon money to use. :) I will be putting that aside and buying my ink from Goulet, instead. I'd prefer to help out these store fronts anywho, and their prices are normal. :)

I will probably jump on the Heart of Darkness bottle at $15.00 if I see it again on Amazon though. :D

I shop at the goulets. I use amazon because I have prime shipping (2-day free shipping) and it was cost effective to buy a single bottle at $12.50 and not have to pay for shipping. To me it isn't worth buying one bottle of ink (if I don't absolutely need it) and pay shipping from the goulets or other retailers. I'd rather save it for a larger order as to not constantly pay shipping. To each his own. I've never had a problem with ink from amazon before- Noodler's ink is Noodler's ink. I was just curious to see if there was going to be a price hike (which I've read that nathan is against.)

I've noticed a fluctuation in the prices on amazon before, but never this big of a gap. Thanks for all of the input everyone!

Thanks for all who support us! I do want to state for the record, Noodler's ink prices are NOT going up. I cannot speak for why the Amazon sellers price things the way they do. But rest assured, Nathan has NO plans to raise the prices on his inks or pens.

I've also looked at Amazon but wonder just how long the ink has been sitting on the shelf and what the conditions are for the warehouse. I love Amazon Prime but there are just some things that I'd rather buy from a reputable dealer.

For a couple of bucks more, I know that I'm getting relatively fresh inventory from a place like Goulet.

Thanks Rachel! That was one of my primary concerns with the prices being that high.

It's just a different seller with different pricing. I would start stocking up if there was a price increase soon.

I'm not sure how the prime shipping works but I'm sure some idiot sellers incorporated the shipping into the purchase price and offered free shipping.

$12.50 is pretty amazing for the bucket of ink they offer. I wouldn't be surprised if they cost $16.50 within the next 5 years.

The prices on Amazon vary a LOT day to day. I bought a 32gb minihdsc card on there for $29.99 one day, went a few days later to buy another and it was $49.99, the next week they got more stock in and it dropped back to $29.99. This happens often with books, movies, etc I've got on my wishlist as well.

Last year, when I started my last bottle of Noodler's Eel

blue, I started looking for more. A lot of suppliers were

out of stock, so I got a bottle of Eel Turquoise. Nice.

A few sellers had the Eel Blue. Prices approached $20.

I love the free market. I did not buy.

Last month, I caught Goulet's inventory of Noodler's Eel

Blue @ $12.50 . I bought a half dozen bottles. I didn't

know that I could get 5% discount.

For what it's worth -- and a little bit off-topic -- I swore off using Amazon Prime and my Amazon points for ink after I received a bottle of Iroshizuku packaged only in one of the sleeves they used to mail a book. No padding. No nothing. Fortunately the bottle was fine, though the box was crunched.

This was fulfilled by Amazon. Individual vendors on Amazon would probably do a better job of packing. All the same, I'm sticking with unbreakable items when using Amazon fulfillment. I'll happily pay the Goulets' shipping charge in exchange for their thorough packaging to ensure that my ink and pretty boxes arrive in perfect condition.

Speaking from experience, it's not at all uncommon to see Amazon sellers get into some pretty heavy price wars. I know that there were several instances where we (Pear Tree) were the lowest price on HoD, and I couldn't box it up quick enough. We were at one point selling at least 6 bottles a day when we had it priced at around $16. When another seller caught wind of it, though, the price war ensured and we traded low prices back and forth for at least 3 days. There was one day where the price got as low as $13 a bottle! We weren't making any money, but at that point it was probably an ego thing. :)

Bottom line? Although it sucks for retailers, you can score some absolutely stupid deals by waiting until two sellers get into a price war. Happy shopping, kids!

I have seen Art for Life/greenman508 hike prices as stock gets low. That store is currently selling Noodler's demonstrator rollerballs for more than they have ever been sold for, probably because they are one of the few who still have any in stock.

And wow skippy, do they package thoroughly! I just put in two orders with them, and both arrived packed suitable for space flight. No kidding. In fact, one was so perfectly and generously padded that I had trouble getting all the packing material back into the box after removing my items, which were already in their own boxes to begin with! It was worlds away from stuffing my barenekkid purchases into a padded envelope and calling it a day, which is what I'm used to from other retailers. I was extremely impressed... and that's not easy to do.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and just hazard a guess they don't get too many returns. :)

+1 on Prime!

I agree with some of the others though - with things that have some/any sort of lifetime (re. Ink) I'll suck it up and pay shipping from the Goulets. I've only ever purchased a Lamy Safari from Amazon because it was to be a gift and I needed it soon!

Plus by using Goulets for ink purchases - I buy less often!!!

On a related note, the handful of Noodler's Ahabs listed at ebay are all $32+.
