1970's Waterman Fountain Pen

Jack Burton

Recommended Posts

Hi, I wonder if subscribers could identify the following fountain pen that my Grandfather bought me as a school boy in the 1970's and subsequently lost; it had sentimetal value and I would like to replace it?

Waterman Fountan Pen

Polished chrome barrel and cap (both had flat ends as far as I can recall)

The screw in part was black (plastic)

The nib was steel

The shape of the barrel was straight, but it was not round - it had 'flat sides'; a polygon shape; can't remember how many sides

The closest I've come is the Graduate model, however this is smooth polished chrome.

Any ideas appreciated?

Thanks, Jack

Hi, welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell.

Are you sure the nib was steel?

Was the nib semi inset?

Was just the section polygonal?

Jar, thanks for the response....and the answers to your questions are:

Are you sure the nib was steel? No

Was the nib semi inset? No

Was just the section polygonal? The barrel and cap were straight with the polygon shape all the way down

The Waterman Graduate looks like it except its shape is circular, in fact in this picture the graduate seems to be the shape I mention, except having bought this one, its not.

I'm afraid its not the concord, nice looking pen. Reminds me of the carene I bought, that was a nice writer too.

Framebaer, you're right....just need a name. Strangely enough it was'nt very expensive - I just mourn the loss.

Thanks

Then try looking at Vintage Waterman Pens and see if you find something that looks like it.

Jar,

Thanks for your suggestion, it was after checking that + other images & sites that I saw the forum and signed up. I found the threads really interesting.

I own a number of fountain pens of various types including a Duofold prototype & an Edson. The next purchase is, besides the Waterman I'm trying to trace, likely to be a Yard-O-Led Astoria or Yard-O-Led Corinthian (probably both).

Try contacting Max Davis directly through email or skype. He's one of the good guys and sure knows more about Waterman pens than I ever will, but the only 70's faceted Waterman I know of was the Concord.

There was also a model called the Torsade which had a small facetted body and cap but the facets were twisted down the body. (a loss I pine and greive for.)

Minimax447, you little beauty!

Yes that's the one; I've found a photo attached, which is gold coloured, mine was chrome. Now I just need to source it. I notice one was sold via FPN in 2009.

Searching............Thanks,

Jack

Glad to help. I'm after one myself at the moment to replace one that is broken and another that was lost. I have a couple in sight and will let you know if one or the other becomes available.

Hi,

Excuse me for butting in, but I've searched the forum for hours already trying to find a hint to ID my pen.

I have a chrome Waterman very like this one except the facets are not twisted but straight. The end of the barrel tapers very slightly.

On the nib, which I think is steel, it says only Waterman (with a strange form W) and FRANCE underneath.

It was given me by a friend who told me he had bought it in 1975.

The pictures of the Concord on the vintage waterman website do not look at all like my pen - it looks like the one Jack Burton showed in his post just above, except that the facets are straight. Would that be a Torsade too?

I have a picture:

Definitely not. The word "Torsade" means twisted. There is a pen called the Facette and this will be it.

Do you have a photograph - the Torsade is closest in looks to the pen I have, even with the twisted facets. I did a google image search but the Facets that's turned up are all Parkers, and look very different.

It turns up images of pens that are similar, but there are differences. For example the one that has almost the same shape, that is called Facette by the poster (on a spanish language FP forum, (http://estilograficas.mforos.com/1176626/9995574-mis-tres-nuevas-waterman-3er-intento/) is not, as far as I can make out, facetted. In the same thread another person shows a Graduate, which is facetted like mine, but the clip is not solid but has the distinctive Waterman shape. And so on.

So mine is probably a little earlier in the series, given that my friend had bought his in 1975, I think here in Curaçao.

Thanks for helping me clear that up a little.

  • 5 months later...

Just wondering if your Pen is the Waterman long Facette?. The facets are 5.25cm on the pen and 5cm long on the cap.

Yes, I think you're right. Those are the measurements on my pen. Thanks very much for clearing that up. Do you know where I might find more info about that model?
