J. Herbin Bleu Nuit

Recommended Posts

Congratulations on Review 100 Sandy1! I am especially appreciative of the subject and timeliness of post 100, as I've been on the Bleu Nuit fence since joining FPN. This did it: I'm adding a bottle to my next online order.

Hi,

Thank-you!

If I'd been sitting on a fence for over four years, my bottom would be quite numb! ;)

Another great review, Sandy and I'm definitely going to have to try this one.

Hi,

Even more inky enabling!

This another subtle ink: less likely to appeal to those with a preference for the more vibrant saturated inks. HBlN may be especially desirable to those who also like MB Royal Blue.

Well, I've ordered some this evening so we'll see pretty soon. I will be able to comment on the re-formulated Diamine Blue-Black too, in a little while. All being well with the world.

Hi,

I look forward to reading of your experience with Bleu Nuit.

Off-Topic: I was not aware that Diamine reformulated their BlBk, so the new version would also be of interest.

I would imagine the Herbin will be with me early next week. Also, I think you've seen my comparison of the Diamine Blue-Blacks as well.

My daughter graduated in architecture with a first-class degree (that's roughly equivalent to Highest Honors) this spring, and I gave her a vintage Aurora 88 pen/pencil set because Marcello Nizzoli was one of a group of Italian avant-garde architects she'd written an important essay about. I invited her to pick out an ink to go with the pen, and J. Herbin Bleu nuit was her choice. She's now using pen and ink very regularly and loves to tell people about them. Her uses back up Sandy1 all the way!

Terrific review, as always. Keep 'em coming!

Hi,

How very generous to gift such a classic pen!

Clearly your daughter has inherently excellent taste in ink! ;)

Please pass along my congratulations to her on achieving a degree with distinction.

I like the colour of the ink and it's flow properties. Only thing I noticed was that it seemed to change colour more than other inks after it had dried for a day or so.

When I get my bottle, I'll have a look at it and Diamine Midnight which I think pales slightly after a day or so and becomes a really nice mid-dark blue. Really worthy of using in conjunction with the new R2 reformulated Blue-Black.

Another great review, Sandy1, thanks for this one and the other 99!

Like others, keep 'em comin'....

Bleu Nuit is one of my go to inks the past 2 years...never let me down yet....

Now, if you can just get JHerbin to change their stupid bottle design (ie, make it vertically oriented, instead of low and squat...), it would be perfect!

Hi,

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I haven't seen a noteworthy change of colour / density over 'a day or so'.

The Written Samples were prepared on a pen-by-pen basis over perhaps two weeks, so it seems likely that I'd've noticed something similar to your experience, especially as I use a range of papers of various characteristics. (Scanning was done about ten days subsequent to completion of the inky work.)

From my experience, most dye-based inks take a no more than few minutes to settle onto the page, and any change is minor; though others, such as Diamine China Blue, are known to change considerably after a day or so. Still others, such as the Washable Blues and Waterman's Mysterious Blue (ex-BlBk), will change over a longer time span.

(The inks containing iron-gall are another case entirely.)

Please let us know if you experience the colour shift on any specific papers. 'Before' and 'After' images would also be much appreciated.

Hi,

You're welcome! And thanks for the kind words!!

I share your opinion of the ink's reliability.

Ah - the notoriously dysfunctional bottle! My work-around is to buy the 100ml size! ;)

I don't have it loaded into any pens as of now. Plus I'm not too sure about posting pictures here either. Might be a while.

Thanks for the suggestion, S1.....

My workaround is to pour it from the JHerbin bottle into an empty MB ink bottle....holds about 2 JHerbin bottles worth of ink...and is easy to fill with them...

Congrats !

As usual I'm impressed by the quality of your reviews.

Only error is 'Reine des Bandits de Largeur de Bande' seems to be a bad google translation, in french, it would be 'Reine des voleurs de bande passante' ;)

(had to make this negative comment as I'm jealous of your review).

I ordered Scabiosa after reading your review.

Hi,

:W2FPN: - as a Member!

Many thanks for the congratulations!

Thanks also for your efforts to improve/expand my French language vocabulary beyond mots utile; I do not consider that to be a "negative comment" in the least. :)

Please let us know of your experience with Scabiosa . . .

Congratulations on 100 ink reviews, and thank you for this latest one. I've long found your reviews to be among the most informative, and I think unbiased, on FPN. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. I'm hopeful of many more!

As to Herbin Bleu Nuit, it was one of the earlier ink acquisitions I made. It's been a favorite all along. The ink performs very well in any pen I load with it, from a Lamy 2000 with EF nib to a gigantic Indian ebonite ED pen with a B nib. It's basically a "can't miss" ink, as long as you're onboard with the color. That, too, I find quite pleasing.

Hi,

You're welcome!

Thanks for your kind thoughts!!

HBlN is one of my inks that I reach for when I want to try a somewhat off-beat pen & paper combo - it seems to handle pretty much what I choose to use too.

I do prefer the wider nibs to show-off the ink: Lots of subtle ink on the page, yes?

  • 4 years later...

That's another great review Sandy. I think I'll go out and get a bottle at lunch time. The Pilot Blue Black will have to move into second place in the queue.
