A link with an old German book (1893) with lots of ink receips you might want to add to Open Ink.

I've updated the link under Books. Thanks!

It has been really fascinating to see how this began by reading the early posts... though I couldn't bring myself to go through all 7 pages just before bed. Can't wait to check out the website! I'm just a beginner but making my own dip ink might be something I'd try and I'm not even concerned about permanence etc... more on how ink is made.

I'll keep poking around as time goes on. I have a fascination with early illuminated manuscript dyes (but not much knowledge).

I like this topic, and I could see the website is on and nicely filled already.

I didn't read all messages, but I thought that it would be a recipe "engine" where "ingredients" - like basic inks - are used to be mixed to create a new shade. And also that would allow to search for resulting colour and properties with "preview" like colour code and/or picture sample.

I'm a professional web developer and could spare some of my time for this project if you think that kind of feature could be useful.

Also, I have in mind a solution that would fit in the actual project.

I am the current admin for the site... and would love to do more with it, but we lost steam. One of the people that started it all started making ink for profit, and we have been stalled since then... Contact me through the private messaging, and I will get you on board!

I think there is nothing wrong with the ppl involved receiving some profits when ink is sold. You could produce open source ink, sell it, and pay yourself to try to cover the invested hours of work. I would not have time to mix my ink.

Everything is impermanent.

For what it is worth, the open ink webpage will be going down in August. There were several problems. We had some technical problems. I hosted the open-ink page for several years, and I have enjoyed the experience. There were some neat ideas exchanged, and I hope the conversation continues, it just can't continue on my dime. Hosting costs are increasing, and I am too busy to maintain the site.

I feel that this project could have gone somewhere, but that the intentions were not always pure. I feel that this was a marketing ploy to get the some of the most experienced people involving fountain pens and ink to give up everything they know. I have no intention of naming names, but I do think the behavior is shameful.

I don't mean to moan and complain. I'm just disappointed, and I hate to give up the ghost.

I will try to copy all the content to this forum before the site goes down.

Sorry to hear that. I wish more would have contributed and it could have turned into what it was meant to be. Thanks for keeping it going as long as you have.

I have not had much time to experiment with making ink, I still have the dyes and other materials just sitting in the shelves. It's nice that you had the pages up for this long.

Such a shame! Although I understand your reasoning.

I don't think my earlier reply ever reached the board. For what it's worth I have a hosting package with quite a few slots left available. That doesn't cover the cost of renewing the domain itself (which comes to what, a few bucks a year? sure a few of us could stump for that) it does allow the actual hosting to carry on if you'd be willing.

What code did you use for the site -- something like joomla, wordpress, mediawiki...? Anything relatively conventional is possible on my hosting account. As long as we're not into umpty-GBs of traffic a month it shouldn't pose a problem.

Let me know. Would be a shame to see this sort of resource come to an end.

I'll host but wouldn't be the best moderator – I am not an ink-maker but simply hate to see a body of FP knowledge drop off the web.

Will a moderator please step forward? :)

I don't know anything about ink making, but the project looks interesting. If it isn't possible to copy the old page to a new host as is, I would like to offer a helping hand in coding/designing the new one.

I'll name names, I'm pretty sure the finger is pointing at me. I apologize if I came across this way. It really was just a fun idea and then life got in the way, and I didn't have time to contribute. Nor did I have time to read what people were contributing until tonight. It wasn't supposed to be marketing, it was supposed to be fun.

Most of what I regret is that I didn't have time to contribute more. I also regret that I haven't had time to develop better ink recipes, etc. I teach full time now, and run my historic inks and art supplies business, and have 2 kids and a wife.

But, if you feel like you were tricked, and that feeling is towards me, don't feel that way, you weren't, I just lost time.

So where can we buy open source ink? Will the open source ink website sell prepared bottles? :)

Everything is impermanent.
