Pelikan 600 Nib -- Too Small For Its Body?

I have one 600 with two nibs. I really find the size and girth of the 600 to be the most pleasant for me and the most practical. The 1000 is way too large for serious writing, the 800 is a good size but a little bulky, the 215 and 200 are just too small, but the 600 fits just right. But the nib size seems to be out of proportion with the size of the body. It's the same size nib that goes on the 2XX series so I can understand why it would seem so small, but did Pelikan ever make a nib for the 600 that was larger in size? I just feel like the two don't go together (the nib and body).

And maybe I'm being picky, but this seems to be the case for the 800 as well. The nib just seems too short for the body. But it seems that the nibs for the 1000 and the 215 match in proportion their respective pen bodies. And I would think that with the thinner shoulders, the nibs would look longer, but it just doesn't seem to be the case. Are these the only nibs that were ever available for these pens in terms of size?

I no longer own any fountain pens... Now they own me.

Hi

Are you sure they aren't M400 nibs, as to my eyes the M600 nib is slightly larger and doesn't look out of proportion to the pen (whereas the M400 nib does seem a little small in the M600).

I'm also thinking that maybe the 600 and 800 nibs are just narrower at the shoulders than the 215 nib and therefore appear smaller relative to the body.

To be honest with you guys, I kind of felt that way when I first bought the Pelikan 600 (from a place in Asia). So I bought an extra nib in another point size (extra fine) from a well-known American shop and that's the nib that's on the pen right now (and it matches identically to the 600 nib I got originally with the pen). It could still be possible that both stores gave me the wrong nib.

Hi,

I see what you mean by it seeming narrower, I'll have to take a closer look at mine and see how thye actually compare.

I know what you mean. I have the M640 Polar Lights and the nib seems a tad bit small for the pen. In fact, I am using an M600 nib on an M200 today, and it seems like it fits in.

Adding: my M400 nib is smaller than my M600 nib in the M200. If the M600 had a larger nib, it would cost more. Also, the M640 nib looks all rhodium plated, and costs about $270 US to buy. It's still small, but would hate to think of the price if the M640 nib were larger.

It's purely visual appearances. The pen writes great even though I'm not crazy about the size of the nib. But it's like one of those things that I'm constantly aware of. I think that the 600 nib is a HAIR taller than my 215 nib, but the 215 is obviously wider, and I think that could give it the appearance that it's larger. If I didn't have two different inks in the pens right now, I'd switch up the nibs just to see if it's maybe my imagination or if maybe I'm just unhappy with the nib looks on the 600.

The nib on your M600 appears to be the correct size. When I first got it, the nib didn't seem much larger than that of the M200 I lost and sought to replace with the M600. I understand your sentiment, though...

The Pelikan nib interchangeability chart from richardspens.com might be useful. I'm attaching an image since getting to it at the moment requires some extra navigation:

There's more info under the image on his site, regarding interchangeability. The M700 nib will fit an M600 pen, and looks to have broader shoulders, but then it's missing the nice swirly pattern... The M800 nib won't fit a smaller pen.

If All of Richard's image is to scale and I'd be surprised if it wasn't, it's interesting to me that between the 400 and 600 there is a noticeable (not huge, but noticeable) increase in length with the 600 but NOT Any corresponding increase in nib width. The 800 nib is of course, noticeably wider than the 600 so it's not like Pel doesn't pay attention to that too.

Perhaps a bit wider on the 600 would even the proportions up some.

I've never noticed this before with my 600 until mentioned here. I am very happy

with the size of the M600 myself. No other size Pel works for me at all.

Yeah I just asked my wife too to take a look at the two nibs (the 215 and the 600) and after inspecting for a couple of seconds, she said the 600 is skinnier but taller than the 215. It doesn't affect the pen in any way, still writes great, and I love my 600. But at least I'm not the only one to see it lol.
