I am much happier with this rosewood veneered box now I have given it a quick coat of dark wax to even out the colour.

I dont know wether to seal it or french polish it.

I'm thinking, actually, of a 2 shelf box....15 pens per shelf.....or three shelves of ten each....I'll have to look and start sketching it out.

What size pens are you planning to store.

For normal size pens I allow 15mm per pen then 5mm for a seperator so your shelf/tray would be 300mm 2ft long.

I use 10mm oak for trays and at least 20mm for the sides of the box 10mm for clearence all round so the outside size of the box would be around 370mm.

I prefer to use trays like these

The small pen trays hold 16 pens the large tray for oversize pens holds 9 pens.

I hope that helps you work out the size of box you need to store your pens if you need any more information let me know.

I have a lot of esterbrooks, and lots of smaller vintage pens. But then I also have bigger pens like my mb146, and my monteverde invincia. Have 5 or 6 pelikans,

I'd say my largest are the MB, monteverde, parsons essential, sailor 1911, and the nakaya that's on the way

To quote from jaws "you are going to need a bigger boat" for boat read box :roflmho:

Decide which pens are going in each tray make the slots to accomodate the biggest pen.

Take the largest pen wrap a piece of paper around it including the clip fix with tape and then remove the pen and measure the inside diameter of the paper this gives you the internal size of your tray.

large and oversize pens can be trickey especially as I dont have any to use as samples I use 15mm plastic waterpipe and make cardboard tubes for other sizes.

Hope this information helps.

I thought I already had one writing slope dilemma the name does not seem to fit anymore.

I had thought of letting it go but there is a lot of good stuff there.what do you think?

You don't need to keep posting in that thread if it has passed its usefulness. There is definitely a lot of good stuff there, and will be kept in FPN's archive for future reference. By the way, I don't think I actually commented on your fuchsia leather - I like it a lot  Have you made anything with it yet?

I have been asked to make a pair of princess style boxes one light and one dark so I came up with these.

The dark box is fumed oak and will have a suede lining

The light box is a burr but I cannot remember what wood it is

I really enjoy making the little boxes as they dont take a lot of time to make although i still need to cut them and make interiors.

Another day then

lol - I had to look up "fumed oak" to find out what in the world that might be - according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is:

oak given a weathered appearance by exposure to fumes of ammonia
(Does that mean we are prematurely aging our pens every time we use a water and ammonia solution to flush them out? :P )

Both of those woods look very nice, Michael. I look forward to seeing future photos of the boxes as you work on them.

I have refined the princess box a little further by adding a small piece of suede between the base and lid this stops the lid from opening too far.

Fumed oak exterior with indigo suede interior.

No locks or catches just rare earth magnets hidden beneath the veneer/

Maybe, Writing Slope Restoration. I was trying to think of something with a little aliteration, but could only think of Writing Slope Saving and I think the R,S,R pattern sounds better than the R,S,S. I don't know, I have it followed, so no matter what you change it to I will still be able to find it.

Keep up the amazing work! I will definitely be looking back at a lot of this when I attempt to make my first pen box.

Hi PensMakeMemories I like the username by the way.

I went with bigger boxes for new boxes as I wanted to keep the writing slopes topic for restorations looks like i might have a couple of orders for writing slopes so new boxes may have to wait.

I started this while I was waiting for the glue to go off on the writing slope I am working on as I had the clamps out for the writing slope I prepared a top and bottom in 6mm marine plywood.

When it is dry I will trim everything to size and sand it ready for veneering maybe later today.

Thanks for looking

Hi Michael, do you just glue the pieces together, or do you glue and nail? Thanks!
