I really don't know if the rules apply to small items, but after the way the Australian authorites got up tight about dirt on our shoes when we went on holiday I wouldn't be so sure...

Regards,

Richard

It does apply to small items. A friend emigrated to Australia and she took a pencil box which contained a pencil made from a twig. She was given a choice of paying $300 to have it irradiated or having it confiscated and burned.

I have looked at their website and they dont allow anything with bark my box will come in the solid wood with plywood and veneer.

I am sure that Fuchsia Princess will be along soon to keep us right.

I might include a description of its construction in the packaging.

I thought you all might like to know the Dark princess box made it in one piece to Australia and the lady was most pleased.

In the process of making this box I actually made two the second box has a couple of minor blemishes which I should be able to sort.

I am experimenting with a different method for creating the pen slots using molding rather than dowel.

I think I might use light green leather to line this box.

It is not perfect but will be very nice when finished.

It is looking for a home if you are interested please let me know.

Thanks for looking

Hi Michael,

I actually like the look of the wood. It would be a shame to cover it all up, although I understand you want it protect the pens from scratches.

I really like your idea of using molding instead of dowels to make the pen slots/cradles, Michael. I may "appropriate" that idea for my next project, if you don't mind - and depending upon how you get along with gluing in the lining. Light green leather sounds lovely. I await your next photos detailing your progress. :)

I am sure you will find a good home for the box - wish I could say "Mine" but I already have more storage than I have pens, and that's even without the Ryman's box you are modifying for me, so I will be good and let some other lucky person say "Mine!"

How beautiful. I would love something just like that

:notworthy1:

Thanks for the support Ruth.

I left this box on my desl for a day or so and then thought it needs to be finished.

So here we go

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8173/7948159752_98fac7eb3d_z.jpg

IMG_1923 by my0771, on Flickr

As I dont have a band or table saw I had to cut the box by hand it was very hard to do as the box is quite small.

I have some rare earth magnets which have been fitted into the edge of the box these edges were then veneered with walnut.

IMG_1915 by my0771, on Flickr

In this picture you can see a spare magnet sitting on top of the fitted one which is now hidden by the veneer.

The interior is a piece of leather with a piece of dowel glued to each side which will be glued in place when the finish has been applied.

I need to find a set of hinges for this box sand it and apply a finish and it is done.

Oh and then find a pen that is 12.5 cm (5 in)long to put in it :roflmho:

The two pen box is comming along as well.

Thanks for looking

Looks like a nice piece or work. Congratulations. Just wish you had chosen a different title to the thread. Can't get that song out of my head........little boxes on the hillside and they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same. 1962 - wow - that's 50 years ago.

Well, that is a great song. the version I know is by Pete Seeger, and he sings it so very well!

Thanks Kate

I have not made any single boxes for a little while the box pictured above now lives in Canada.

I do have this box which is the same inside but it has been veneered in burr walnut and birdseye maple.

How did you manage to get hinges that are high enough to accommodate the thickness of the leather, Michael?

http://i1027.photobucket.com/albums/y331/fuchsiaprincess/Fuchsiaprincess_0001.jpg http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/036/2/2/Narnia_Flag_by_Narnia14.gif

Well spotted fuchsiaprincess they are called barrel hinges.

They are trickey to fit the holes have to be spot on.

In this case the holes were too far apart so I had a gap I was going to put leather in the slots then veneer the edges but I liked the leather so I went with it.

I have made a new insert it still needs trimming.
