Can you spot the mistake

:bonk: :crybaby: :crybaby:

Tomorrow is another day

hope it helps someone smile

Doesn't seem like you are off by far. If you carve out a bit in each end, your pen will just end up sitting more stable in the box, and you will make it fit. Or you could make a round hole, fitting the bottom of the pen perfectly, in one end, and a groove in the other, so that you put the pen into the hole at an angle, and slide it downwards.

Lots of ways to improvise to make this box work. Just consider the possibilities. It looks like a great box, and it should be easy to adjust it.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Pil I never did get round to updating that story that box has found a new home as it was.

I am in the process of making a new box for that very pen.

So keep watching

Regards

Michael

This is the dark princess box I was going to leave it until next week but I could not resist giving it a little light sanding.

This rosewood veneer is beautiful there is no wax or any other finish on this box a few more hours of sanding and it will be ready for cutting in half.

Thanks for looking

I am curious. Doing it this way, surely means that your veneer over the cut edges of the joint will be visible when the box is closed. How will you hide the 0.7mm depth of veneer on either side?

On my writing slope, I went a hard way and made the carcase as two separate open boxes (should have cut just one box), then I veneered the inside and edges, then applied the external veneer. That way, when shut the internal (mahogany) veneer didn't show on the outside at all. If there is a clever trick to avoid some of the labour, I'd love to hear it.

Regards,

Richard.

I don't know if it is clever but there are two ways to get around edges

Here after installing the magnets I applied a very thin layer of glue and a lot of pressure top and bottom with cling flim in between to stop them sticking to each other.

The edges of the veneer are sanded with fine wet and dry paper and the joint almost disappears the only line you might see is the glue

The other solution I use on bigger boxes is edging it is thin pieces of wood 3mm x 1mm corners are planed down and edging applied I will add some pictures tomorrow they are on the writing slope thread some where. The edging should be the same colour as the veneer or a contrast apply the veneer when it is dry then sand and sand.

If that does not help I will post pictures when I am doing it.

Any more questions please ask

Michael

Never thought of folding the veneer over the edge. Obvious really.

Regards,

Richard.

Sorry Richard might have lead you up the wrong path there.

The veneer is not folded the two pieces of veneer are the same wood even if you look at the edge.

When you apply the veneer to the inside edges it needs to overlap the vertical veneer.

I will dust the snow off my workbench outside and cut this box so I can show you what I mean.

Michael.

  • 1 month later...

I am sorry it has been so long since I updated this thread.

My New years resolution was to complete the projects that I have out standing before I take on or buy anymore.

That means there are 6 or 7 little boxes at least 8 writing slopes and an as yet undisclosed number of cutlery boxes hidden in the garage. then there are a few fountain pens waiting to be restored.

It would appear that my wife s resolution is to make me find homes for the said boxes :(

I have to start somewhere so the dark princess box is first on my list I tried cutting this with my new pull saw unfortunatley It did not cut straight (saw not me) fortunatley I received a bench mounted sander for Christmas so I have been able to rescue this box.

If no one puts their hand up for the dark princess box, may I please have it?

Thank you, Michael!
