Oh my goodness! I started using fountain pens a few weeks ago and just came across this thread....Michael those boxes are amazing! Thank you so much for posting your progress with each box, it adds so much more depth to them. Makes me want to try my hand at it...maybe in a few years when I have more time  For now I look forward to your next piece of art :D

I ordered a new batch of veneer last week.

Rather than use one piece to cover the top and a separate piece around the edges I decided to join two pieces together

I then identified which points on each piece I wanted to match up and cut the edges rather than trying to match up the pieces when gluing up I stuck the pieces together with masking tape.

I laid the box on the veneer and put a line of masking tape around the edges of the box using a knife and a ruler I cut out the top and four sides of the box.

I looked at it several times, but I don't see anything wrong with it. To me it is beautiful. Not sure how it would be like in the "flesh" so to speak, but from the pictures, beautiful. It invites the eye in to look for meaningful patterns. The asymmetry does not bother me.

Hi Ike

Thanks I am pleased that you like it is burr walnut.

Thanks mhguda when you see it in the flesh the joint is not quite right I think the leaves were mismatched and so the markings are slightly out.

I am not sure what to do with this box it needs another 5 or 6 hours to complete and if it is not right I will just throw it out then so I think it will sit on my desk for now.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Michael

Hi Michael,

The veneer looks just fine. Please don't throw the box away!

If you really don't like it, PiF it, your country only so the mailing costs don't spoil it for you. If the mailing costs weren't so crazy I'd ask for it! But, I think keep it a while on your desk and see if you don't come to like it...

  • 2 weeks later...

I was reading a thread on journal making the other day they were putting initials on o book cover and I thought that looks good, I wonder if I could do that.

Artistic I am not but I came up with this my initials are M Y by the way.

Which I then drew with a ruler and cut out with a craft knife I was left with what I call a negative and a positive piece

This is the positive with the cut out piece attached to card.

I think this will look good inside a lid on a box I would value your opinions

Thanks for looking

Very interesting! I certainly think that's a nice touch, I would say it makes your creations, which are already one-of-a-kind, even more personalised. Is the design just pressed into the leather? How permanent is it?

Thanks I marked out the design on card and cut it out carefully with a craft knife so I could use the waste piece.

I then stuck another piece of card to the back of the first piece.

I then stuck the piece I cut out onto the top piece of card next to the hole I cut it from.

I then spread glue over the card into all of the areas finally adding the suede which I pressed into place with a small paint brush.

It does not show well in the pictures but the image on the left is raised up and the one on the right is sunken.

As these are my initials they will not be appropriate for every box but they will be going on my own box (if I ever get round to making it).

I think there are lots of possibilities for this technique I will be making some more samples.

Thanks

Michael

I like the raised initials, and it would be nice both on the outside or on the inside of a box. It would be something to consider for your writing slopes...

Inside, I think. Such that when the slope is open it is in the left top corner? So it would be unobtrusive but you would still see it...

Michael, that I don't know but if it were my writing slope and you had restored it, I would want your initials on it. But that is hypothetical only, I won't be getting one of those, just imagine the shipping cost! and, I have No More Space in my house for something like that... But, I guess if it were a commissioned restoration you could ask when you take the work; otherwise, put your own initials. You do the work... and it is thusly identified. The nice thing is that your initials say MY...
