  1. 1. Would you use a fountain pen to defend yourself if assaulted?

Has anyone ever used or considered using a fountain pen as an option of self defense? After all, it does have a pointy nib on one side...

The pen I write with, is the pen I use to sign my name.

One time I thought I heard some noises in the next room while I was at my desk doing work. I had no weapons by me at the moment, so I creeped in there with the fountain pen intending to use it as a weapon in case it was someone that broke in. It turned out to just be my AC was acting up. But I wouldn't hesitate to use anything near me to defend myself. I can always replace a fountain pen, but can't quite replace my life that easily.

There was that scene from Casino where Joe Pesci effectively uses a pen (was it a fountain?) as a weapon against a guy who insulted Robert Deniro. You could do a lot of damage with a pointy nib. But if someone really had broken into my house, they're likely going to be better armed than me, so the fountain pen would be a desperate attempt to equalize the playing field.

I no longer own any fountain pens... Now they own me.

I'm honestly not sure how much damage it would do if you just randomly swing a fountain pen. However, if you caught something soft (like an eye or a weak point) it would do enough for you to get away (which would be the point). That being said, I'd use a Q-Tip if it were the only thing I had in my hand. :-)

Then there is the scene in Indiana Jones 3. Where Sean Connery squirts the nazi in the eyes with ink from his pen allowing them to knock him out. Not very realistic perhaps, but fun.

The pen is mightier than the sword after all. :)

Would help if I had my old style Rotring 600 to hand. I'd also be EXTRA angry with whoever it was if they compelled me to risk damaging it in order to defend myself ( ;) ) - which I most definitely would do. In fact, the 600 capped rather than uncapped is a formidable kubotan, as is terminal's tactical pen above.

roflmho.gifroflmho.gifAbsolutely I would, but I figure if I can't get my hands on my shotgun - there's likely a bigger problem at hand!

After all - http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa95/joenpb/Benelli%20Nova%2012%20Ga/8cb4.jpg is probably a bit more powerful than http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21odKUElFVL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

If I was assaulted, I would use whatever was handy to defend myself.

I imagine a FP would be very effective at the joints (elbows, knees)... Assuming that you would not want the person dead, or you would pick different areas to hit.

The thought that the nib of a fountain is sharp is one of the main reasons I don't get real showy with my pens at work. I work in a prison and I could see my supervisors not allowing me to take them in if they perceive my 149 nib as a weapon. I believe a ballpoint would make for a better stabbing weapon as a nib would just crush with too much pressure.

You'd probably be better off putting the cap or barrel in somebody's eye than the nib, anyway. A cheap brass chinese pen will do just as much damage as your MB, and damaging it would be a lot less traumatic...

The time it was take to take the leather pouch out f my pocket, open it, pull out a pen, unscrew the cap would take far too long. It either be beaten in this time or have the pouch/pen taken from me. I'd also wonder how accurately I could stab someone with the nib. It would be useless at going through clothing so I'd guess it would only be effect for a neck strike.

If the pen is going to get damaged in your attempt to defend yourself, you might as well either give it up and claim on insurance or find a more effective at of protecting yourself.

Of course I would, but I have trouble imagining a situation where a better defense option wasn't available. Nearly anything is better than a fountain pen.

uh well, yea, if that was the only thing handy...

I do own a chair, several lapidary samples (big rocks) and several knives, so if someone DID break in they had better just kill me first, because I would not stop assaulting them with anything at hand until they realized they had made a very big mistake!

I use "The Fountain Pen is an elegant weapon of a more civilized age" as a signature on my posts for a reason. If attacked I will definitely use my pen. Since we live in a society that is paranoid of guns what else can I use? I work at a university that forbids guns on campus. If allowed to carry I would definitely "stand my ground". The right to protect ones self is beyond any law. It is a right of birth.

I would not let myself be a victim. If I had a chance to incapacitate an attacker I would take it. A pen in the eye or some other vulnerable spot would suffice. I can't image the idea of just submitting to destruction by some force. It goes against nature.

+100 to those who posted the shotgun pics. Truly the weapon that won the west.
