What an absolutely fantastic collection of 'collections'! ...and that hobnail dialed PP is a beauty too! yikes.gif

Amazing - thanks so much for your eloquent writeup and wonderful photos as well.

Really appreciate your kind comments Mike. I naturally agree on the Patek. I love the contrast of the hobnailed dial against that cool ivory, porcelain face. Fits well with the MB 139 doesn't it!

Thanks for sharing this lovely collection. On the MB 149, 2010 (OF bespoke personalised nib) is this a nib you had tuned, hate the term ground, or was it a special order from new?

Ignore last post. Sorry.

My modern MB 149, with its bespoke and personalised ‘OF’ nib, makes for an invaluable companion for my MB daily (A5) organiser, where MB’s mystery black ink conspires with my MB diary and note paper to betray my daily activities. I am not a fan of engraved pens however; MBs personalisation of my 149’s nib is perfectly discreet. The fact that mine was only MB’s fourth such personalisation for a UK customer is the likely reason why, when writing with my modern 149, I am often found wearing a silly smug grin!

No problem Pen Nut. Thank you for your comments.

For what it is worth, I had the nib done by the good MB folk in Hamburg after the last FPN trip to MB Hamburg. Rocksyper, Evgeny and I all had our handwriting electronically analysed/assessed before placing our respective orders. For anyone interested, there are a few posts on FPN and the Net describing the process.

Whilst the service exists to get one to spend a considerable sum in addition to a brand new pen (typically a 149), I instead chose to have my existing modern MB 149’s nib turned to an ‘OF’ - the analysis suggested I rotated my hand whilst writing, sufficient to warrant considering an oblique. I took the bait  but actually, I think it a good idea to be given a steer as to what nib should suit one’s hand, and for that information to be stored centrally and relied upon for future purchases. However, it was the personalisation that I was most interested in. All I had to do was to send the pen off to Hamburg via the boutique in Manchester, together with a copy of the ‘certificate’ I was given in Hamburg, recommending an ‘OF’. Given that I had already met the wonderful MB ladies who would be dealing with my nib, I was confident of the outcome.

After some fatherless person decided to close our local boutique in Manchester, my pen was eventually delivered to the London, Old Bond Street boutique. Actually, I was treated superbly and my newly arrived nib caused quite a stir, those good people not having seen the service before.

As can be seen from my post, the personalisation works well and is so discreet as to remain unnoticed by anyone other than the most eagle-eyed MB enthusiast.

I was booked on that trip but due to other issues had to pull out at the last minute  looks like I missed out on a good one.

Oblique fine is my weapon of choice in nib size so that 149 you have must be an absolute dream :cloud9: Dare I say I have two Edsons (waterman one blue & gold and the other the diamond (black & silver) both with factory obf nibs and they wite superbly. All my MB's are either tuned to ci fine or OF.

your collection looks great

Oh and boutique wise up here I agree with you, following the closing of the Harvey Nics & Prestons Of Bolton boutiques we have nowt which is a sad loss and a good example of short sighted marketing. But hey what do I know ;)

Hi Pavoni

How did I miss this thread?

I have missed a lot here on FPN and missed some chats with you.

I am amazed with the photos of your collection, I have been waiting for ages.

While my pen buying was loosely 13x and 14x you have done incredibly well to remain true to your goals.

Your discipline and focus is to be admired, and you must have a very understanding and generous other half!!

We could make suggestions for future collections, but that would be cheeky!

Oh and that cheeky shot of the Patek is lovely :cloud9:

All the best with great respect

Those wartime pens are awesome. Great collection!

They are one of my favourite parts of the collection MiamiArchStudent, and the fact that they could only have come from that specific period in time, make them that much more interesting. Actually, I thought I had all the versions available but recently picked up a wartime edition of the MB 236 :D I suppose I will now have to hold out for the wartime versions of the MB 138 and MB 139....... :cloud9:

Thank you for taking the time to comment. Very much appreciated.

I, too, think the fact they are only from that period of time does make them much more interesting. I'd imagine the wartime models are much scarcer than the others from that era?

You are absolutely right, the wartime versions are scarce and seemingly not as often faked as some of the other MBs. However, I also believe that they typically pass by those collectors who aren't fully aware of MBs history, of which these are such an important part.

I actually like the look of the engraved/embossed rings so much so that I may start a collection of such pens from the other German fountain pen brands. However, first I have another project im mind........ ;)

Thank you very much Shrinknib. I really appreciate you dropping in and finding time to comment. You know that I had been promising to show my collection for ages, I just didn't think it would take so long  Now that I have pulled my finger out, everyone has been so kind in their comments. Just goes to show that FPNers like to see pictures of pens. We simply love looking at what other people have by way of collections; and some of us are interested in why!

As for a future collection :hmm1: well...watch this space ;)

I think that would be a great collection to start. I have always loved wartime Pelikans and Soenneckens. Perhaps, it is due to my deep interest in WWII history. I still always keep an eye out on eBay and elsewhere for a wartime Pelikan model.

  • 5 years later...

~ After reading pavoni's post listing current Montblanc pens in his collection it sparked a memory.

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/37727-how-many-mont-blanc-do-you-have/page-17 Post #327

Looking through archived posts I found this thread which had the information I sought.

There's an image of pavoni's Bespoke OF. I'd indirectly heard about it from a friend, but never found it as I looked in the wrong threads.

To my surprise, this thread also has comments from Pen Nut telling about his preference for Oblique Fine nibs.

It seems that like pavoni, Pen Nut also writes with OF nibs.

This is unexpected and thrilling to know as I have a special love for OF nibs.
