Does anyone have a 5284 nib and 9284 nib that I may borrow and test out?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Amberlea, I'm not aware of a 5284 nib having been made. Did you mean a 2284 and 9284? If so, I think I can help you out.

I think I have a 2284, but I wanted to compare the 2284 with the 5284 and 9284...what's the difference? Surely the numbers mean something??

D - I'd love to take you up on the offer.

So, the 5xxx series are the same nibs but for the dipless pens not the fountain pens? That would make sense, Timothy, thank you.

What's the difference between a 2314 and a 9314? I just tried them side by side and they sure feel different when the write.

The 1xxx and 2xxx are untipped steel folded so that it looks like tipping material; the 9xxx are 'iridium' tipped. I have never had Dip-less 5xxx or 7xxx and I don't know if there is a similar distinction. Interestingly the tipped ones are not always smoother to use.

Kind regards

Timothy

Yes, we send a BLUE GHOST named INKY. He has been known to devour fruit and dots and even little yellow people. It's very disturbing. I keep a wanted poster of him in my avatar. Not to mention Karma (she can be a .....)

Oooh, shiny pretty pens on loan! Do I have 30 days yet? ...28. *does the I Have Almost 30 Days Here dance*

Maiden, Mother and Crone, I can't believe it's only been 4 weeks since I joined up! Though I and my big fat mouth are definitely waaaay past the post-count :lticaptd:

In the meantime, I'll raise my glass (of water; it's 10am) to a beautiful program and some very generous people who offer their time and their pens to strangers for free. Such a wondrous place this forum is!

And I'll be back in 2 days for your Esties :ninja:

Having reached my 30 days, I humbly ask to borrow the Blue SJ with the 9788 flex nib. If that's unavailable, I would love to borrow the Green LJ 9048 extra flexible fine. I vow to return any pen in the same condition I got it, and, should a pen come to harm under my care, to refund its owner the cost of repair or replacement. Even if either owner declines to lend me their pen, this is still an amazing concept and I am in awe of it. :notworthy1:

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi everyone--

I'm hoping soon to have the required number of posts and (I think) I have the required number of days to participate in this program.

Before that happens, I would like to ask for advice. The numbers and designations are foreign to me and I have a lot of reading to do regarding the characteristics of each nib.

I have a very light touch and enjoy more flexible, wet/"juicy" writers. To that end, are there any examples of Esterbrook pens that roughly resemble this description in this loaner program? (Edit: For the record, although I'm not an expert calligrapher, I've been dabbling in it since I was a pre-teen and know how delicate flexible nibs can be.)

Also, I may have missed it, but are there any requirements/limitations on the ink to be used with these pens in the program? I would suspect the owners would prefer borrowers to use tried and true innocuous inks (Skrip, Quink, Waterman, etc.).

Thank you in advance!

John

I was wondering if any pens with a 9555 nib are available? I am learning shorthand and would like to see if the "Gregg nib" is the best for for writing in Gregg.

Good evening everyone!

I'd like to ask if it might be possible for me to borrow the Green LJ 9048 extra flexible fine? This is my first time participating in the borrowing program and my first experience with an Esterbrook (aside from the dip pen nibs).

I do have experience with flexible nibs and promise to treat the pen correctly and return it in exactly the same condition in which it arrives. I have several different inks available to use and I suppose Sheaffer Skrip Blue is probably one of the best ones to use, especially in a pen on short term loan.

If it's not possible, I understand, but I would greatly enjoy the opportunity to try one of these great pens.

Thank you!

John

Of course, the Counselor is correct. It is Not a good thing to overdraw your pen kharma account. I think the 30 day/posting rule has helped. We haven't lost a single pen and we've only had 1 borrower stiff his loaner outter for the mailing fee. And that's for at least 50 loan outs.

I must profusely apologize to our newer Estieville borrower visitors.

This moving of the thread caught me. I didn't notice these newer requests for pens. I will work here at getting with the pen's owners.

Standby.

Miz Cow, I have contacted the owner for your pen backchannel, expect to hear from them shortly. If you don't in 2-3 days let me know please. In the meantime, please be sure and read post 1 of the Loaner Thread so you are aware how the program works.

John, I have contacted the owner (I think) for this pen. You should hear from him shortly In the meantime, please be sure and read the 1st post in this thread to familarize yourself with how the Loaner Program works. If you don't hear from your pens owner in the next 2-3 days left me know.

Supernib, the short answer is no, But.

I combed over the loaner list and there are no x555s. However, I think I may have a 1555. If you don't mind a bit of a wait, I will see if I do, get it all cleaned out and be sure it writes decently and screw that into my Loaner pen, a 3 rib Black Tranny that has a 2442 in it now. Let me know here if you'd like to do that.

Again, my apologies for missing these loan out requests. :(
