Never happened to any of mine. If you post photos, and be a bit more specific on what is happening, maybe we can help...

I will get the picture in as soon as possible. It's a memorable gift from an old friend of mine.

There you go. It doesn't look so obvious as it was taken by my Blackberry, but in actual fact, it's kind of obvious. Anything I can do to work it out?

I have good news and bad news...

Good news, I'm beginning to understand the problem. Bad news, you are not going to like it :happyberet:

Even though I'm sure it is a lovely pen, I'm not sure it was actually manufactured by montblanc. Which would in fact explain the yellowing as well.

If you would be so kind, please post a sideways photo of the clip, and wait for someone else to comment on it. While I have a reasonable success rate at detecting fakes based on photos, I sometimes overdo=it...

In any case, just for the reference. The pen shouldn't have a "lip" between the cap and the top; the yellowing star is worrying in itself; the clip seems to have been manufactured using a different process from the original. I don't think mine is that shinny, but this is much more subjective than the other factors.

Thanks for the extra photos. I'm now 100% sure that your pen is not original. I could spend some time trying to highlight the differences, but instead I'll leave you a picture of one of mine so you can compare yourself.

What happened was that the plastic used to make your pen isn't of the same quality standard of the original, and thus it is yellowing. I'm afraid there is nothing you can do about it. Unfortunately, it might also prove to be difficult to find a replacement, as replica pens tend not to be standardized enough for that...

Sorry for being the bringer of bad news...

P.S. - there was a problem with the image, I'll correct it and upload it again when possible. sorry for the inconvenience.

Sigh, but fairly expected. Appreciate so much for spending time on this. Will let my friend know of this as well. Thank you dear osnofian. =)

  • 2 weeks later...

I could be wrong, I am new to FP.

But I think the discolouring means that the star is the Montblanc Mother of Pearl star, it discolours over time/UV.

The cheaper resin snowcap stays white all the time.

So I would take the discolouring as a sign of preciousness.

If I am wrong, I stand corrected.

Unfortunately in this particular case you are not correct. I actually never heard this. I've never seen or heard of a Mother or Pearl star being yellowed, but I don't have many of those. It is fairly common to find discoloured/yellowed montblanc stars in the 50s celluloid meisterstucks, but there were no ballpoints at the time ;)
