Nice one, BTL!

Alas the iconography has me baffled too!

Thanks, D.ick! I was hoping you'd chime in...with some answers!!! ;)

Hope all is well with you!

I first thought Imperial Russia, but the eagle would probably be double-headed, I think. Now, I'm thinking it's perhaps German? I'm so curious about this piece!

This is kind of weird, too. At the same place, I bought an antique Villeroy and Boch lidded sugar bowl, and upon examining the mark on the bottom of the piece, I see there's a person wearing a winged helmet of sorts. The piece was produced in the Mettlach factory in Germany.

  • 2 weeks later...

Today this arrived...I know nothing about it but took a fancy to it. It is 'The Williams's Ink Pot'. I thought from the pics I saw that it would be fairly small but it has turned out to be enormous and has swallowed a whole bottle of registrar's ink without blinking.

I would welcome any information from anyone who knows anything about them; where made, how old & etc.

I think this is a desk-inkholder, to be used with dip pens. These were used at the counter of banks etc, This way they did not need to tie a pen to a cord, and it was no use for the customer to accidentally take the pen... I have seen several types here on FPN over the years. I have a simple one myself made by Esterbrook. Nibholder has a 9668 nib. Ink capacity is small as compared to yours.

Thanks RMN,

I figured it looked like the sort of thing that might be found in a bank or similar, the only other one I can find reference to on the internet is red but otherwise identical (pic below) but there is no further information about the company 'Williams' such as where they were based. As far as I can gather the pots were made around the late 1890s. Anyway it is now providing sterling service on my desk for my dip pens.
