Inkwells!

Thank you Laura. :D

I am particularly fond of the one from the 50s. There is a certain naiveté, in the craft, I find very touching.

Maria, that one is so sweet! I agree! Just lovely! Where do you keep your inkwells, by the way? I'd like to amass more but my desk has no room to display them.

Been a while since I bought another inkwell. I picked this up at the market today. Antique brass. Possibly Indian-made. Two candleholders, central inkwell, and pen-tray. All one set.

The inkwell has a milk-glass liner inside. I set the whole thing out on my desk and put two candles in the candleholders.

Very pretty metalwork! Enjoy!

I am glad you like it Laura.

For the moment, I keep them in a wooden trunk, while I am looking for a wooden / glass piece of furniture (I have something in mind and could not find it, yet. I make them take turns, one a the time, on my desk.

@Shangas

Nice setting yu have there. Is the metal work hand made?

Some truly beautiful inkwells here. I have one attractive period style inkwell but my favourites by far, from a practical as well as attractive point of view are these little beauties. from Paperinkarts.com

They are airtight and heavy with tops which screw on firmly. They hold a perfect amount of ink and the necks are designed to take an nib in an oblique holder.

Here's what I have. The two at the front right are Levenger inkwells that I'm pretty sure were discontinued years ago. I also have a much larger and heavier Levenger inkwell that I acquired since this photograph was taken. It too has been discontinued, although I did see it pictured in the latest catalog that I just got from Levenger. It was, however, just a prop and not offered for sale. All three of these inkwells have O-rings to ensure a good seal, but the design of the cap and the hinge placement do not allow the O-rings to actually seat into the collar and there is in fact no actual seal. Ink placed in any of these inkwells does evaporate over time.

The two bottles at the front left really are bottles, not inkwells. They were made by Paul Terban, but he seems to have closed shop. I can't find any trace of him now. I have four of these, three with clear glass and one with cobalt glass. (The one that appears black is the cobalt glass one, it has black ink in it. The other one has Noodler's Glacier Blue.) These seal very nicely and the ink does not evaporate.

The two glass trays underneath came with the Levenger inkwells, one with each. They have two pen rest grooves, a square depression for the inkwell and a rectangular depression for paperclips and such.

I have a battered old inkwell in the shape of a frog. No liner, and his head sometimes falls off, but I like the way he holds my turned ballpoint.

Some lovely ink wells on this thread! I love the fancy ones, although I've always enjoyed the more simple glass variety in my home. I don't tend to use them, as the ink dries out without an adequate air-tight seal on them. I just use the ink bottles I buy (Parker Quink, Sheaffer Skrip, Omas, Pelikan) to keep the ink in for practical reasons. I also quite like the bottles if i'm honest.

However, on my desk I have my pen tidy! After all, if you have inkwells you need to have somewhere to put them, right?! The ink wells on it are purely decorative, but I keep most of my pen collection in the drawer (felt lined), and one pen in the top try for go-to use (if you're interested it's an unusual Platignum fountain pen (I think 1990s if I remember rightly) with brass barrel and enamel coating.

Wow, I love this! That's some beautiful workmanship.

Just a simple stoneware inkwell that I found in an antique store:

I put a small cork in it, and will be using it at living history events.

I have a few inkwells but don't actively collect them. This is one that I like. I know nothing of its age or history.

My grandparents had a general store that doubled as the town's post office. Over the course of many years the place was vacated and torn down. When that happened, I was given terminal pillaging rights. Part of the swag was a couple of inkwells and a dip pen that the USPS left behind. The inkwells are "self closing" Sengbusch models that lock themselves into a hole in the desktop. Their capacity is much to large for my use. I keep them as curiosities only. The dip pen was probably left behind because its nib was bent. It was easy to repair. The pen is a Sheaffer "FineLine" desk pen without a reservoir. The barrel has a breather hole in the side and no provision for a lever mechanism or a cartridge. The nib and feed unit screws into the barrel like an Esterbrook J. The nib is an F and will write nearly a whole page on a single dip.

I was thinking of the name of what you generously provided, Sengbusch. I have one of them purchased years ago from the 'Bay or somewhere I can not recall; never actually used it. Not sure why I purchased it, perhaps it was the history of its use, as you mentioned. I won't say it is a doorstop, let us just say it sits comfortably on the floor guarding other fountain pen accoutrements with extreme pride. :lticaptd:
