Writing Slope Dilema

Wow! I'm looking forward to the finished product. When I saw the original condition I was thinking of re-purposed pen boxes. Nice job with the inner trays, as well as thanks for the step by step. :)

I thought it was time to update on progress.

The lid is just about finished I thought it would be good to show a before and after.

It was sad that I could not save the original veneer however I used pieces from the lid to repair the front as with many boxes the top and the front are different veneer to the rest of the box.

The top of the box was not flat so i have let the veneer follow those imperfections.

I have not repaired every missing piece of veneer I have tried very hard not to remove the character of the box so there may still be the odd chip and scratch.

The main body of the box is now sound and hopefully should be around for another 100 years or so.

Thanks for looking

Michael

I thought I had taken before shots of every part of this box it would appear not.

Well not good ones anyway.

This is the front left corner just needs a little more wax.

The camera shows every small detail to the mk1 eyeball the repair is almost invisable.

I am approaching the end of this restoration project.

One of the final stages is fitting the leather to the writing surfaces.

I made a cardboard template and used the template to cut the leather.

The leather only fits one way so I placed masking tape at points around the edges I then cut through the tape this meant I could reposition the leather first time when the glue was applied.

Here is my new project not a writing slope I know but it is a cutlery box no 2.

I have no plans to veneer this box it will be getting a new interior with as many trays as I can fit inside.

The shape of this box is a bit of a challange as the inner trays need to match the shape of the box.

So I decided to do the easy bit first the inside.

the inside of this box is going to be red velvet it is a very rich tactile cloth needs to be wrapped around card with minimal glue as the glue shows through very easily.

This is the base and it is now complete just the lid and trays to finish now I have a secret weapon to help with the angles more to follow.

Thanks for looking

Time for the top velvet is not very forgiving I had two attempts at the lid insert.

You also have to be very careful with the glue if you get glue on your fingers it is very easy to get it on the velvet then it is toast.

I thought you might like to see the pen tray under construction.

After some thought this box will hold ten large pens.

I had an unexpected early start today so I had a few hours of quiet time before everyone else woke up

This was the result as you can see from the earlier pictures I had marked out where each dowel was to be placed in pencil.

I used mitre fast to stick the first dowel in place making sure it was square then used a block of wood to ensure the other pieces were in line.

I think I will be staining this oak to match the colour of the outer box.

thanks for looking

I know this is the time of year for gifts and so for all of you who have watched this thread through the last few months.

here is the finished box in all its glory.

I have never used velvet and it does have its drawbacks tops and bottoms are very hard to hide so I have used satin ribbon to cover the transition at the edges.

The white paper roll is 170mm long and 18mm wide the maximum size of pen would be 240mm x 21mm larger diameter pens would still fit in the box they would just sit a little higher.

This box has no felt on the base and I am undecided.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread and to those who have watched

I would like to wish you all a Happy Christmas

Michael
