Not forgetting the diameter of the lock pin which will become the inside diameter of the key.

Those old locks are fascinating, Michael. The standard ward-lock is not too difficult to find keys for. At least, that's been my experience. I have a number of boxes and such, which use old ward-locks, and I find them pretty easily at flea-markets and such, for just a couple of dollars each. It's the more intricate security-locks that you have real problems with.

Hi everyone my next writing slope project has been put on hold.

I have been asked to convert an old cutlery box to store fountain pens and the to restore a writing slope to as near origional condition as possible.

First the cutlery box

The outside will be burr walnut veneer the inside will be oak and red faux suede.

Another adventure begins

Thanks for looking

Michael

Is the cutlery box solid wood or is it already veneered? The outside looks like quartersawn Oak, and if it's solid it'd be a shame to veneer over it. From photos it looks like sides are solid Oak and the top and bottom are veneered.

I thought that at first however closer inspection reveals it to be plywood and pine with a good paint job had the exterior been good quality I would have waxed it and left it alone.

Thanks

Michael

That's a really good faux-Oak paint job! But veneer would definetly be an improvement.

I watched my father in law use paint to produce a similar finish many years ago.

It was the edges that gae it away I champhered them before glueing the edge banding and I could see the laminations clearly.

I am interested in restoration and giving new purpose to things that no longer hadve any use.

This item was purchased long after the cutlery had gone and may well have been thrown away.

I took a lot of pictures before starting on this box this one shows the paint effect and at the top you can see the laminations of the plywood

Sorry Fuchsiaprincess I did not mean to give that impression the plywood is still there.

The veneer is stuck on top of the origional box, I have two pieces left to glue in place today I will take some pictures to show what I mean.

Thanks

Michael

I have been unwell today so nothing has gone to plan

Heres what I was trying to explain before,

Veneer is very thin 0.6 mm and very fragile especially at edges and corners.

To get around this I remove the point from the corners then glue thin pieces of hardwood 1 x 3 mm onto the corner.

I use the same carpet tile with a piece of wood behind it clamped down tight.

The corners are trimmed (really sharp knife) and sanded down nice and flat (hopefully) sometimes the sanding will open up the edge which will then need reglueing back down.

Sorry to hear that you are unwell, Michael. And thanks for the explanation regarding the plywood. If you didn't have to remove any plywood, how did you manage to get the veneer flushed with the cartouche?
