Hi Michael, not bad at all :) Better than I could do, that's for damn sure!

That teensy-tinsy widdle anvil is adorable! I think they're called 'jeweller's anvils', aren't they? They're for making jewellery and such...

Over the last couple of days I have been cutting veneer and gluing it in place

As you can see lots of clamps a piece of carpet tile against the veneer and then wood ontop the wood evens out the pressure the carpet tile protects the veneer from sharp edges.

Every section is now covered and overall i am pleased with the result

Today I have made the frames for the actual writing areas I measured the depth of the old rests and had wood cut to match 9mm this will make everything level when the veneer is added.

These frames cannot be the exact size of the hole or you would not be able to open them (found out the hard way)

I now need to make them slightly smaller and then cut the plywood

Thanks for looking

Michael

Oldschool ward-locks (the kind pictured there) are really easy to find keys for. So long as all you need is a key that fits the key-hole, almost anything will do. Easily replaced if keys are lost.

Ok update time I had a minor catastrophie this week I was having a really bad day and decided to glue the tray liners in place before sealing the wood. I dropped the brush onto the inside of the tray just a small amount of shellac sealer but it ruined the tray so I had to make a new one.

This picture shows the lower section with its writing slope frame in place with one board in place all of the wood you can see here will be covered.

the box and the oak frame will be covered in walnut veneer, the plywood will be covered in leather or cloth.

OK back to the job in hand.

this is a writing pannel with its first piece of veneer

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8024/7696420412_76d6ff7493_z.jpg

IMG_1640 by my0771, on Flickr

Hinges held in place drawn round and chiseled out I then glued the veneer on top left under pressure for 24 hrs so you have base wood, glue, veneer, cling film, carpet tile, wood, clamp. I dont know if that is the right way but it works for me.

I then trimmed the veneer with a razor knife test fitted hinge then marked the holes and pre drilled the holes.

I had another moment when one of the screws snapped in the hole after removing this I started using a steel screw in the hole first then the brass screw.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7120/7696431042_49428860b0_z.jpg

IMG_1652 by my0771, on Flickr

this is the finished hinge in place to the right in this picture you can see the plain wood this is where the material that joins the two writing pannels will be stuck

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8287/7696422246_4e0bf1a568_z.jpg

IMG_1641 by my0771, on Flickr

This slope had a small bolt which stops the upper pannel falling down when the box is closed it like everything else was missing.

I managed to find a chap who is reproducing these bolts and fitted it in order to do this I placed the bolt in its slot applied glue to the top of the bolt and positioned the veneer and left to dry.

2 hours later the veneer was lifted off with the bolt stuck to it cut around the bolt and soaked it to remove the glue.

the cling film is to stop anything else sticking to the veneer.

Thanks

Locks locks locks my little world has been full of locks lately I tried to obtain what I thought was the original but it was not possible.

So I have chosen one that is a little smaller but will do the job.

As you can see the key is small and quite fancy but it works ok.

Everything is comming together now and I have directed my research towards finishing

My first thoughts were wax then I got a book and discovered shellac sanding sealer.

This is two coats of shellac and two coats of wax.

Michael, this thread's amazing!!! I only found it today, and the project plus your story telling (not to mention the very good pictorial tale) is captivating. Especially as I've just got hold of a slope to start work on too. Granted, mine's not quite got so much woodwork as most of it is there. You've inspired me to start taking some pics of mine too...and from your trial and error (I feel for some of the little accidents and head-scracthing moments you've had!) I can really see what work and doesn't for when I hit an issue.

One question...if forum rules etc allow, would you be able to name which suppliers you found/used for parts such as locks, hinges and hardware etc. I'm currently hunting strap hinges and like myself, though I just need a key for my lock. I'm thinking that your T-hinge idea is a good one for stability though, so I might go that route.

Thanks,

J

Naming suppliers is ok by forum rules

Thanks for the kind words

I dont really have a list of suppliers as such Jennings I bought the hinges off the chap on ebay whose other hinges I posted on your thread.

Brass screws I buy in boxes of 200 from my timber merchants along with my finishing products.

I buy the veneer from one of two people on ebay

I will supply details on the locks when I am happy with the fit and function.

I dont mean to be cryptic just have a few problems to sort out first.

This was the object for today to reunite the two halves of the box even if it was only a temporary arrangement.

when I acquired this box the origional hinges had been replaced.

As had the lock and just about everything else.

The new lock and keep did not want to fit.

And as for the hinges they are a story on their own, Normally hinges are fitted flush to the wood so not knowing any different I fitted the two halves together and they fit fine.

I fitted the hinges flush and the box would not close I was advised by a friend that the hinges were not deep enough so deeper they went.

As you may have gathered this did not work.

At this point if I had a drawing board I would have gone back to it.

I removed both hinges and the box fitted together fine.

Trial and error has shown that the hinges must be surface mounted to allow the box to close

I am not happy with this and may try thinner hinges in an attempt to resolve the issue.

I have started the preperation for the finish the white spots you can see in the second picture are the sawdust from sanding.

Americann walnut has what the experts call open pores which need to be filled with a special filler which is on order.

I have decided to wax the oak pieces and am still undecided on wether to wax the outside of the box or french polish it.

I really need to get this finished as I now have two waiting and an idea to make a box from scratch.

Thanks for looking

Michael

I respect your work even more knowing you're feeling your way here and sourcing things from wherever you can spot them! It's refreshing to see a project done in this way, rather than an expert using well honed techniques and a part/materials store he's already got in his workshop...points noted about the hinges, as it looks like I might have a similar issue when I get to that stage myself.

Do you think the hinges you have there might have the "knuckle" section too centrally between the wings of the hinge, and maybe for slopes you need hinges that have the knuckles displaced out one side? I've only just thought of this, and I realise that doesn't make much sense...I mean this:

-o- (knuckles exactly equally between the open flaps of hinge)

_o_ (knuckle position is displaced to be out one side of the hinge)

I have no idea if hinges come in types like this...but it was just a thought.
