Writing Slope Dilema

I was reading on another thread that Holly likes to travel with her pens and I was thinking how I could secure the pens.

If I was to put a piece of ribbon under each end of the tray inserts they could be tied in the middle but I am unsure wether this would be enough to hold the pens in place.

How about elastic bands/straps, like what people use for the waistbands of shorts and tracksuit-pants? You could buy that stuff at a sewing-supplies shop, cut it to the right length and stretch it to the correct tension. Then staple-gun it to the bottom of the pen-trays? You could use black or white elastic, depending on what would look best.

I'm talking about this stuff...

Hi Michael - I do indeed have a "traveling" case that holds about 14 pens; I use it when I go to my pen posse meetings. It is a cigar box that John (BamaPen) designed to my specifications for this purpose, and it works very well. I can't imagine I will need to carry more pens with me so, though I appreciate it, you really don't need to spend time trying to figure out how to secure pens in the Ryman's Box. (Though if you come up with something, please share - it might be of use for other storage boxes!)

(I will take the box to a pen posse meeting, but just as a "show and tell" to show everyone what a fine job you did, it won't have any pens in it while it is being transported.)

Your storage box is lovely, Shangas. Did you end up moving the tray lift up tab or did you leave it where it was for your "ghost hole" escape? :P

Velcro or Hook & Loop fasteners also come in strips you can cut to desired lengths....

The final bit of glitz has arrived for my pen-chest.

The gold plaque which will sit on the lid :)

Centering it and sticking it down could be tricky, so I won't attempt it on my own. But I will get it done, soon.

It has a single border around it, and a little flourish, and just "PEN COLLECTION" engraved on top.

Umm, wouldn't that just be a red flag to a bull, in the off chance that a robber breaks into your house :roflmho:

I looked around and found purpose-built pen trays at gopens.com and pandorapens.com. I think they both sell flocked poly-styrene trays in various colors. Personally I plan on picking up a Dvd tray the next time I make it out to Ikea since we have one close to home. Sales tax is cheaper than shipping. I don't have a beautiful box for my pens yet but a girl can dream. While I'm at Ikea Il'l see what they have in the way of wooden trays/boxes.

Possibly, but as I think most of us are aware, the majority of vintage/antique fountain pens aren't worth more than a couple of hundred bucks. And a lot of them, even less than that. Substantially so.

Besides. I keep the pen-chest locked. They'll either have to smash it, jemmy it, or pick the lock, first, and risk damaging the goods inside.

Unfortunately, Shangas, therein lies the problem.

Vintage pens are only valuable to us, and not worth much in a monetary sense. However, by virtue of you storing them so lovingly in a beautifully refurbished box, with a gold plaque, under lock-and-key, this makes them appear 'expensive' to people not in the know. Not only will your beautiful box be damaged, but most likely your pens as well. And when the robbers find out that they're worth diddly-squat, they're not gonna be very happy with you, and will probably simply chuck them into the garbage bin.

Just my paranoia raising its ugly head :ninja:

I'm not having a lock on my box at all.

I decided not to wait for my father to come back, and stuck down the plaque myself. Here it is:

Perfectly centered, and conveniently covering that pesky water-mark.

I've done so much damn work on that lid to no avail. I don't intend to start over again. It took me months just to get it that far. As far as I'm concerned, the job is done never to be touched again.

Hi everyone

I am planning on starting a new thread for my larger boxes that are not writing slopes and it needs a name I already have the little boxes thread so as you can tell catchy titles are not my strong point nor spelling for that matter.

So I am asking for your help I will be offering a prize for the title that I choose to use.

Thanks

Michael

why not simply go for bigger boxes by michael. I liked the Little boxes title, it made the thread very "findable", if that's a word... Good luck with this, I don't think I've posted to your threads before but I like to read and look at the beautiful pictures.

a fountain pen is physics in action... Proud member of the SuperPinks
