Any ideas for a desk pen holder?

I have a old glass vase that holds about ten pens and pencils on my desk. It's OK, but I'm concerned about them knocking about and getting scratched or scuffed. Just curious -- what do people use to keep and protect pens on their desks?

Thanks in advance.

There is another thread but I'll put mine here as well. I use a wooden test tube rack that I used to hold several pens upright and seperated.

I use a frog - the round glass piece that was used to hold flowers in the bottom of a vase - it has a number of holes that pens will set in. Some are bigger than others, there are clear ones, green ones, some different shapes. You can usually find them at most any antique shop. You have to make sure the bottom of the holes are smooth; some are fairly rough and will scratch pens.

I found an old ribbed glass jar at a yard sale for .50. It is pretty wide and short, so I put a glass frog I already had down in the jar and it holds ten pens perfectly on my desk. I like using glass frogs but I'm not too crazy about the look of them just sitting on the desk so this idea works good for me.

I use leather dice cups, like the ones you might use for a dice game. I like leather and they are softer than glass. I have three of them, probably paid a buck each at a yard sale.

I use a glass pen rest I found at an antiques fleaw market. At least I THINK it's a pen rest. Big thick glass rectangle, 3 slots going lengthwise on the top, all cutout in a nice round dish shape. Could be something else, but I doubt it. Think I paid $3 for it. I'll post pics later, as I'm at work right now. That is for the pen going with me in the AM, and my usualy writers. The rest sit in the silicone ice cube trays from Ikea that I posted about some time ago. They sit in the top drawer of my writing desk.

Update -- I stopped in the local Bed, Bath and Beyond and found a great selection of "toothbrush holders" in their bathroom section. They have glass, plastic metal, ceramic, wood, etc. Bought a nice wood one with four small sections for FPs and a larger section for pencils, etc.

Thanks to all for your help.

As promised, here's a picture of the glass holder I use. Is this thing really a pen holder? I think so...

My husband had a couple of foam inserts from cigar boxes--they're great (although unattractive) for holding pens on my desk, as the pens don't knock together. A leather version of that would be great.

Isn't sanity really a one-trick pony, anyway? I mean, all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy . . . ooh hoo hoo hoo! . . . the sky's the limit!

This was bought about 2 years ago from a guy on eBay. They were advertised as FLOATY pen holders. They work so well I bought 3 and had a 4th custom made.

Sorry, but I can not remember who the seller was.

Please visit my wife's website.

jd50ae,

Do you have any problems deciding which pen to use? :P

That is a serious pen holder!

I've rubber-banded together a number of small plastic vials I bought at an outdoor gear store (with the tops off, of course) -- they're about 2 inches tall and just wide enough for pens -- and I can add more as my collection grows! They keep the pens from rubbing against each other and are soft enough that they won't scratch the pens. Not the most elegant solution -- I suppose I could put them inside something more decorative -- but they work really well.

It's a little pricy, but Airline, I believe, sells a pen rest in the shape of the Indian diety Kali, which hol;ds four pens. Kinda creative, I thought, for one's faves. I"m still considering it. There's also a guy on the bay that sells a very cool pen cabinet that rotates. It holds 57 pens in 7 drawers and three vertical sections covered in plexi that hold six each. The best thing is it takes up about 9" square on a desk!!

I have one enroute now, because a friend told me how much she loves hers; I'll let you know how it is...

On the desk? I just let the pens sit there where I can grab them quick. I keep the area in front of my LCD monitor relatively clear and that is where they are.

Storage is another matter.

Two flower frogs...the big domed kind, a couple of smallish display cases and a big oak 7-drawer machinist tool case. Inks are on one shelf of a five foot book case. Nothing too pretensious...

I use a 10 pen wood carousel (has a mechanism like a lazy Susan in it). It holds 10 pens and takes up very little space. I bought it from Bill on PT who makes them (excellent work). When I get around to it, I plan on posting a photo or two . . . but it may be a while.
