Ink mixes that didn't work

A one to one mix makes a reasonable gray, but it flushed straight out of the cartridge and into the cap. One could call it a "free flowing" ink mix.

 

Upon further review...

 

I may have been hasty. The ink is very free flowing and I put it into a pocket pen that is quite quite wet writing and it rotated in my pants pocket so the nib was facing down. Ink flushed into the cap. But using it in a dryer pen works better.

 

But it does need some work on the mix to get it not to be nearly so wet.

In an attempt to get a good red I mixed:

 

Diamine Scarlet + Diamine Red Dragon => fine precipitate!

 

A fine precipitate formed which was really noticable the following morning in my tiny glass test mixing vial.

 

BTW this is the first time I have had any problems when mixing inks within the Diamine range.

Diamine answered last year my question by email, telling me all Diamine inks can be mixed among them (only not the special ones).

I personally would not mix any Noodler's inks. They smell so strongly chemical; I'm not surprised there is some reactive stuff going on in those bottles. Seems like 80% of this thread involve Noodler's inks, too.

Coming to this thread a bit late. So, my question is, what did Diamine consider to be "special" inks? Or did they say?

I simply assumed those special inks were their Registrars inks, and their Calligraphy, Indian ink. I will check my email archives, but most likely I will not find anything more. Anyway, people in Diamine is really kind, so we could ask again for the specification. Also, I would recommend always to make a test before a serious mixing attempt.

Cape Cod Cranberry and anything non baystate. You can see the chunks. I just had to try it (in a small container of course).

Wish I had read this one before I decided to add a few drops in trying to not throw away two very low sample inks in the wee hours of the morning recently. Does not mix with J. Herbin Rouge Opera, not good at all! Becomes a dense filmy, nasty looking brownish concoction which also stains everything it touches.

1:1 mix of Noodler's Baystate Blue and Sheaffer Skrip Blue: it began to clump within seconds.

Noodler's Hellfire (highlighter pink) with anything. The color is very light and ... well, highlighterish. I wanted to add a hint of blue to make it a purple highlighter. The addition completely knocked out the vividness, leaving a pale, washed out color. I am assuming that the addition of any ink to any of the highlighter colors will have the same effect.

Not sure what I was thinking (clearly I wasn't...). I mixed the two, left it for a week and came back with black precipitates in the ink.

Noodler's Black with Chesterfield Fire Opal (Diamine Orange)

1:1 ratio when mixed gave a color similar to Diamine Ancient Copper, but it kept separating.

This is interesting: I've been corresponding with Greg Minuskin about a Waterman that I sent him. He asked me what ink I was using and I described the mix of Diamine, Noodler's and J. Herbin inks I've created to mimic the discontinued Bungbox Eel.

 

Well, he replied with the email equivalent of the "Home Alone" kid and told me I should NEVER EVER use a non-factory ink, and sent me some horrific photos of melted feeds and disintegrated sacs, which should not be seen by sensitive people.

 

So, I'm in a quandary. I haven't seen clumping or filming in my mix, and my pens seem happy enough, but is this dangerous? Do most commercial inks not play well together? Does anyone have a substitute for Kabayaki of The Hamaneko Eel?

Sid, I know some mixes are toxic, and that's what this thread is for, but personally, I'm not giving up my mixes.

 

As for a KotHE replacement, I'd suggest asking for it in another thread, or create a CRV.

Noodler's Hellfire and Blue Ghost

following someone's thread on one of the forums for making the highlighter inks better behaved. i tried it and it very quickly turned into something not very unlike Jello.

i'll have to find that old thread and update it. i guess the OP didn't get that reaction. perhaps i could try it again to rule out contamination.

I mix a lot of Noodler's and love them. Midway Blue and North African Violet = beautiful water resistant blue. Let's not forget Noodler's Inkymyn Sapphire.

Amber, I found that both Midway Blue and Burma Road Brown tend to spread sideways a bit. Does mixing the MB with the NAV help with that?

 

As for mixing Noodler's inks, I haven't had any problems with blending standard Noodler's dye inks. Ottoman Azure was a major part of Faux Penman Sapphire #8b for a few years. I still have a bottle of it in the cupboard which is perfectly good (if but neglected since the rise of FPS #9). And Inkyman Sapphire seems to be a better performer in the pen than the 'pure' Liberty's Elysium.
