Show Me Your Ink Book!

Part of why I do my experiments is so that I have a record of my inks (I can magically pull it up on the computer if I need to) or I can look at my sheets. I can compare BSB to LE for myself.

Faithful Sidekick Cinnamin does hers differently, she has a bunch of index cards that are whole punched. She calls it her "inkdex" - below are some samples of punched cards.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Or use those Rolodex cards that are available at every overstock or thrift store. Here is a great explanation of how this lady has (re)created her own very beautiful rolodex card system:

Alright, I think I am sufficiently inspired!

Now I think I know what to do with that Clairefontaine Seyes paper I just bought...

I think some of you must be ISO 9000 certified! :P. All of your ink books (systems) are really something.

Do not let old pens lay around in a drawer, get them working and give them to a new fountain pen user.

I have a three part system:

I keep an ink book showing how the inks look in each pen:

I also have a binder of sample sheets for each ink. These are typically done using the same pen so that I can compare behavior, and I also use the pages for writing practice.

And finally, I keep a database with a list of all of the inks I have in bottles or sample vials. I use this for inventory control and to track behavior characteristics such as flow, shading, lubrication, ease of cleaning, and water resistance.

What type of notebook do you use in the first part of your system?

You are very thorough. It's a pleasure to see your handwriting.

Thanks for the compliment

The notebook is a Classic Clairefontaine Wirebound Notebook - the 148 x 210 mm size (6 x 8.25 inches).

geoduc...Thanks for responding. The notebook is a great idea. I don't have that many inks...yet.

But I want to get started in some organized fashion. Your approach is perfect.

Nope, but I used to be Microsoft certified.

I always have intentions of keeping a record of all my inks, but always fall short on delivery. Seeing this thread is motivation to start something.

  • 4 years later...

I know this is a verrrrrry old thread but I thought that maybe some of you might find this inspirational.

I want to show you how I set up my ink journal. I recently fell in love with fountain pens and inks and ordred around 50 ink samples from several brands and decided that I want to record each ink I tested. In the first place to be able to decide wich colors I want as a full size bottle and to compare them. And also just for the fun of it :-)

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h63/lalelu7/FP/IMG_6092_zpsquuq8sam.jpg

I have an index where I write a consecutive number of each ink (so I always know how many inks I have tested so far), the page number and make a little swab of the ink next to its name.

I have a Rhodia A5 webnotebook and dedicate one spread to each ink. I make a bigger ink swab on the top left of the page (so it's easier to compare colors when you flip through), write name and brand and then just some ramblings if I like the colour, how the ink flow is, what it reminds me of etc. I usually use two different nibs / dip pens to show some variety.

And at the end of the second page I leave some space fo swab similar inks/colors.

That's it. I don't do any tests like dry test or waterresistance because seriously I just don't care about these ;-) I'm writing because I ENJOY it, not because it's some kind of science to me (and I honestly never ever look at the dry test section of any ink reviews either ;-))

The last pages in the journal are dedicated to a small "currently inked" section. I don't write a date because I never re-ink all my pens at the same time. I just want to keep record of which ink is or has been in which pen.

I love this! I'm new to fountain pens also. I just started this year in January. I bought a Lamy Safari just to see what it would be like writing with a fountain pen, it's only been a couple months and I have 6 pens. I also bought a bunch of ink samples. Your ink journal is so pretty, I want one now! Thanks for the inspiration!

Just colour catalogue shown here. Have more through samples for certain inks and list of inked pens. Sorry, don't know why images are upside down...

I'm so glad you like my ink journal and feel inspired! Hope you have as much fun as I do creating and writing into yours if you decide to start one :-)

I ordered an Inky Fingers log book too. I am excited to receive it and hope that it will help keep me somewhat organized. My pen collection has grown to 7! I'm having fun.

In Matt's last video he said that his supplier is no longer producing the paper he needs for the notebooks, so what he has in inventory is the last of them until he can find another supplier.

Great to hear you were able to snatch one of these before they run out of stock! Hop you will show us your journal when you started it.
I have seen some of these premade ink logs but personally I wanted sometging more individual that also provided more space to write.
