Can Someone Help Me Identify This Waterman Rollerball?

I have a Waterman rollerball that I bought and it was advertised as a Laureat. But I also own several other Laureat rollerball pens, one from the first generation and the others from the second generation, and this one doesn't quite match up with any of my Laureats. I was hoping you guys could help identify it. I think it was a model very similar to the Laureat but not quite the Laureat. There seems to be too many details that are just different. But maybe they are the same pen. I don't know. Thanks in advance for any help!

The left one in read is the unknown Waterman that resembles the one on the right which is the Waterman Laureat (the first generation).

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7213/7219954270_0da8ee17d5.jpg On this one I wanted to show that the clip is longer on the bottom one (the Laureat) than on the top one (the unknown). Also, the trimmings are flat on the laureat but protrude and are a bit round on the unknown.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7090/7219954166_9dfb6c50d1.jpg The grip section for the Laureat (on top) is ridged and can be removed. The grip section for the unknown is smooth and cannot be removed from the pen (you place the refills in from the back or bottom of the pen).

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5079/7219954038_c924f56abf.jpg Here both pens are posted on the tail ends. The laureat's rim comes close to the tail end of the pen while the unknown leaves a large gap (where a "step up" begins) between the cap and the body of the pen.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7071/7219953840_ebc23675ed.jpg Here the unknown (on top) is shown again to emphasize that it's very top of the cap has a crease in it while the top of the Laureat cap on the bottom is just a flat disk.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7223/7219953750_3f8fbc4cd9.jpg Finally, the tail ends of both pens. The laureat's on top is smaller than the unknown's on the bottom. And there is a large step up in this piece about halfway.

I no longer own any fountain pens... Now they own me.

I think the logo on the clip was used in the 70's. Pens from that era I have seen for sale had that form of 'W' logo on them.

Both are early models with the square clips.

The unknown one has Executive style rings.

Roller ball grips changed from plain (early) to convoluted (late) so I suspect you have a very very early RB.

I believe that it is a Laureat.

Yeah it does seem reasonable to say that the pen is from the 1970s when you actually hold the pen. It just feels less "precise" if that's even the right word. The logo I haven't seen on a Waterman before, so it is possible it is really from the 1970s. Do you happen to know the range of years the Laureat was around for?

Yeah the similarities seem overwhelming. I just cant find another one like it no matter where I look. then it occurred to me that I might be using the wrong name for it and that perhaps this pen is not a Laureat after all.

The earliest catalogue I have dates from around the 80's...I think because it is undated, but I am going on the known pens. It has the Exclusives which I am fairly sure were mid to late 80's and the Expert 1.

The Laureat shown in it is the first version with the square clip, the same as yours.

I think you can safely call it rare...but can still be found. But strangely this one has the later 'W' on its clip.

I do not know if you are still interested by this issue, which was also mine :hmm1: .

I have two rollerballs Waterman, one purchased in 1985/1986 (the number 103, see below) and a second (black) offered by a friend.

Until last fall, I had always thought that my two rollerballs were Laureat and one day André Mora told me "this is not a Laureat but Executive". He's the expert.

I found no information and a few days ago, I re-opened the catalog of the auction Artcurial - Pens Waterman - Collection Francine Gomez on 7 June 2010 and there Oh! Miracle.

I put the link to the Website of the Auction House: http://www.artcurial.com/fr/asp/fullCatalogue.asp?salelot=1876+++++100+&refno=10302260
