Loose Leaf At Daiso

Recommended Posts

hello, all.

i went to Daiso store at the Serramonte shopping center in the SF Bay Area today and found these pack of 100 sheets of very friendly paper. it came in a A5 size.

as you can see from the pic, they come pre-drill -maybe for some kind of Japanese stationary binder of some sort. anyways, it did not fit my Franklin Covey, nor my DayRunner, so i cut their side and punched new holes in them to fit my junior binders.

no feathering, even with a flex nib.

no bleed thru -maybe just a little ghosting.

the best thing about it is the price: $1.50

i bought two packs for now. but "i'll be back" for more... :ninja:

I just went to their store in Chatswood Sydney and I bought 1 A4 notebook and immediately tried it in store... At which point I bought 10 more :roflmho:

They are truly amazing for the price you get them at. Fairly light weight but bleed resistant and doesnt feather!

I found that the cream coloured pages were much less FP friendly though.

I was about to start a thread extolling their amazingness, but I see I am too late :headsmack:

  • 3 weeks later...

There's a Dasio's down the road from where I work in Richmond/Abbotsford. I had never been there as it just looked like a standard $2 shop to me (which usually means poor quality everything). But upon seeing this thread I decided it was worth a look. So I went down on my lunch break today to see what they have in there paper wise, as the notebooks I use at work are just the cheap Staples one and bleed and feather like anything. I picked up 2 packs of A5 and 2 of the A4, at $2.80 how could I not. I have now brought it back to work and cracked it open to test.

First impressions of the paper is that it does feel a bit thin, but also very smooth. It's much smoother than the paper on the Staples pads, very similar in Smoothness to Clairfontaine but not as smooth as Rhodia.

The paper is an off white/cream/Ivory sort of colour, so not a bright white. Some might find this annoying, but I think it helps bring out the vibrant colours in many inks. I much prefer the Creamy/Ivory papers to bright white, so this is a definite plus for me.

The paper comes in different rulings. They seem to get Plain, Grid, lined 7mm (the one I got) and lined 8mm. Each of these different rulings have different colour text on the package (eg: 7mm is Blue text in all paper sizes and I think 8mm is Green), so it is easy to differentiate between the rulings on the shelf.

The paper also comes pre-holed. The hole spacing looks a little strange and not terribly standard, although there are 2 big holes which seem to line up with 2 hole binders. Dasio's also stocks plastic binders which will fit this paper, although they look a little cheap. If you aren't looking for something fancy they will be perfect though.

Now we get down to how the paper takes FP's and Ink. To test this I used a variety of pens and inks. I used the following Pens to test the paper:

Lamy Safari with M nib with J.Herbin Bleu Myosotis

Lamy Safari with M nib with J.Herbin Vert Reseda

Lamy Safari with M nib with J.Herbin Perle Noire

Lamy Studio with F 14ct Nib with J.Herbin 1670 Bleu Ocean

Lamy 2000 with F 14ct Nib with J.Herbin 1670 Rouge Hematite

Kaweco Classic Sport Rollerball with J.Herbin Eclat De Saphir cartridge

So, obviously I love J.Herbin inks. But these are all obviously pretty wet inks and the Lamy's are fair wet writers. So these should be a good test of what the paper is capable of. I laid down a line of text with each pen and then doing some shading. The text has come out crisp and clear with no signs of feathering. Dry time was reasonable. It wasn't lightning quick, but it didn't take too long either.

The nibs tend to glide over the paper. You can tell it is better quality paper than your standard pads, as the nibs are that much smoother when writing on it.

Now the important part, show through and bleeding. Bleeding did not occur at all. There was a bit of show through with the heavier parts I shaded (particularly with the Kaweco Roller Ball, as I did shade quite heavily hear and got a fair amount of ink down). But the Show through is minimal at best, and unless you are REALLY looking for it you wouldn't even notice it is there.

I am really impressed with this paper. It's very nice quality, takes pens and ink well, no bleed through and minimal show through, meaning it is perfect for writing double sided. The punched holes in it are a little strangely spaced, but that's not so much a big deal as you can buy a matching binder in store (or do as I will do and simply use some string through a few holes in order to make you own binding. Cheap, simple and effective!). For $2.80 it is a great buy and I do highly recommend this paper. Even if it is just for some quick notes at work, it is fantastic quality.

I am going to try this paper tonight with my Noodlers Ahabs and some Noodlers Air-Corp Blue-Green, Bad Green Gator, Dark matter, and Antietam. Those darker Noodlers inks seem to have more issues with Feathering and bleeding, so we will see how the paper holds up against them.

If anyone is interested in some pictures of the paper let me know and I will upload some.

OK, so I have arrived home and I have tried out 5 Noodlers inks. Most were well behaved on the paper, other than the Bad Green Gator. The Bad Green Gator has a tiny bit of feathering, but not enough to be worried about. The rest went on perfectly, although all had a fairly slow dry time. Looking at the reverse of the sheet, the only ink to have Misbehaved was the Bad Green Gator. There is a slight amount of bleed through with the Gator, but again it's hardly worth mentioning. The rest all went fine.

All up I am very happy with this paper. It is reasonably well behaved, although some inks still misbehave a bit. But, for $2.80 it provides OUTSTANDING value for money.

And here are the pics, for those who want to see.

Shows the back. I did have the flash on the camera on, so the See through is more pronounced than in person. In person you really can't see it!

I'm telling you! this Daiso stuff is amazing for the price! been trying out my new full flex nib on it. Dumping some caran d'ache storm onto the page and it barely bats an eye (apart from the spots where i really scribbled at it over and over again). One thing I kind of noticed is that my nibs sometimes have the tendency of grabbing up some fibres every now and then. It's not common and far from a problem though.
