Beautiful Shading?

All those mentioned above shade very nicely! I also like the shading in Waterman South Sea Blue (sorry, don't know the new lame name for it) and Noodler's Shah's Rose shades nicely in my 1.1 italic. Noodler's Habanero is another great shading ink. Might have to load that up in my Divina, it's about time for an ink change. :)

Another Noodler's - Habanero.

+1 I am so in love with Habanero.

Here are two more from some recent reviews that made me go :puddle: for the shading.

Okay y'all have to stop this or I'm just going to have to start signing over paychecks or blood or something to Goulet. Every time you post another gorgeous ink I go order a sample. :puddle: Then I start thinking what pen to put it in and start looking at pens. It's madness!!! :gaah:

I know what you mean! I started out here with a bit over a year ago with only a bottle of Sheaffer skrip blue and now I'm not even sure how many bottles I have... (not many compared to some, but considering 7 bottles are on my desk at work and I still have at least as many at home...) and I STILL lust for more inks! After this post, I now need to try Diamine Meadow, Noodler's Lexington Gray and Golden Brown. Salix and Scabiosa are already on the ink-want list... Between the pens and the inks, I need more paychecks!

Same here. And I have a whole bunch of samples I haven't even opened yet, and two pens that have never been inked yet, and yesterday I was seriously considering a vintage Esterbrook in the wild that looked as if it was in pretty decent shape (and this with knowing pretty much *nothing* about either Esties or lever fillers in general....). :headsmack:

Yinz are all *such* a bad influence on me.

The Montblanc Carlo Collodi shades quite nicely I find. I haven't tried it with an italic nib yet, but when I do, I imagine it'll be even better.

My first ever bottles of Noodler's ink arrived (the two Black Swan inks) and they're quite nice at shading too.

Can I ask what shading is please? I think I have a vague idea, but I'm not at all sure :-)Should I post this separately?I hope you find something lovely samhandwich :)
it is when you draw a stroke, there is more than just one color. this is because the start of the stroke, the ink is thin, the lift off with the pen makes a pool of ink. just google an image of apache sunset.

oooh, I get it now! That IS wonderful, I can see why you'd actively seek it out. It sounds like it's more about a pen-ink combo rather than just a pen or just an ink, right? Possibly the paper too?

Right not I use mostly a Montblanc 145 with Herbin Bleu Nuit, and I don't see it really all that much. But I think I recall past pens/inks that did this. It looks immensely gratifying to be sure!

I'm not affiliated with ANY of the brands/retailers/shops/ebay sellers/whatever I mention or recommend. If that ever changes, I will let you know :)

Exactly! :) You may hear the word 'trifecta' which, in this context, means that pen (nib), paper and ink are all working in concert to produce a desired result. Certain combinations can be outstanding and, as such, another of the reasons many of us end up with more ink and paper than we could consume in a lifetime. (To avoid further self-incrimination, I won't mention the number of pens. :roflmho: )

To all who added photos to illustrate, thank you! Yes, I added to my ink wish list, but that's my fault, not yours. :) Some lovely handwriting, too. Thanks!

All the Best,

Gem

No cameras available, so I'll just second (or third, or fourth, or whatever) the Apache Sunset. I just got the sample from the Goulets and have it in my Levenger True Writer Medium. If shading's your objective, you can do no better. The ink's rather bright for my tastes, but the shading is stunning.

Here's another of my favorites, though the scan doesn't do it justice. In person, Noodler's Navy shades from a deep, slight green-tinged blue to almost black.

mhphoto, yes, thanks a lot for the awesome photos!

+1 for Diamine Meadow (is this available in North America yet? just got mine from pennexperten.se in Sweden)

J. Herbin Vert Olive also gives remarkable shading, but can be hard read (at least under shading conditions). mhphoto, if you happen to have some, it would be wonderful to see another sample...

Thanks! I'm afraid I don't have Vert Olive, but I do have Vert Réséda and it's a great shader (all the Herbin inks I've encountered have all had great shading characteristics.

I seem to actually get better shading from both of those inks on Clairefontaine papers (those are on Rhodia), even though the two papers are very similar. Bleu Pervenche reminds me of clear, clean water. :puddle:

Just flushed Meadow from Ink Drop. It did shade but it was a bit subtle from my wet medium nib. Very well behaved. DeA Rose and Eldeberries shaded nicely too.

This is very familiar. Worse when the color pen has to match the color ink.

In that I believe (with out proof) that a blotter will rob a shading ink of some of it's shading, I would only use Noodler's golden Brown on single sheet paper that one don't want to write on the back.

It is an ink needing a full sheet of blotting.

It takes a very, very long time to dry.

I had a spiral Oxford Optic notebook. (very, very good paper on the same level as Clairefontain Velvet,or it is said,Rhoda)

It took too long to dry to use the other side if one had a thought needing writing.

There was no show through, nor feathering on that paper.

The shading of the ink was pretty good. I need still to find the better nibs, in I had only a semi-flex M to use it in during my trip to the States.

Even if it's going now for twice the original price and it is a small bottle MB White Forest is Great.

It was only made two years, a couple of years ago.

I got two bottles for €13 and one still 'cheap' at €19.

I don't even have the basic fifty shading inks, much less the needed 100.
