Which inks have your favorite shading?

...preferably available from Goulet so I can order some samples.

Thanks!

Can I ask what shading is please? I think I have a vague idea, but I'm not at all sure :-)

Should I post this separately?

I hope you find something lovely samhandwich :)

I'm not affiliated with ANY of the brands/retailers/shops/ebay sellers/whatever I mention or recommend. If that ever changes, I will let you know :)

it is when you draw a stroke, there is more than just one color. this is because the start of the stroke, the ink is thin, the lift off with the pen makes a pool of ink. just google an image of apache sunset.

Noodler's Eel blue and Eel Gruene Cactus. I use broad nibs therefore shading is more pronounced.

Caran d'Ache Saffron and Amazon. J Herbin Éclat de Saphir, Lierre Sauvage and Poussière de Lune.

These are inks that I am familiar with, there are many others that have excellent shading.

Lots of inks will shade if the wetness, flow, and nib size match writing size and speed. I use very fine nibs and sometimes have trouble getting great shading, as many finer nibs are not juicy enough to leave the heavily saturated pool of ink behind. I think I really like Rohrer and Klinger Scabiosa in a Japanese medium nib, but cannot really get it to shade as well from a very fine nib.

IMHO the best is Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses. I also like Diamine Umber and Iroshizuku's Tsuki-yo

You can actually get nice subtle shading out of Diamine Jet Black. Utterly inappropriate name, but a great off-black ink so I'll live with it :D

+1 for Antietam, Salix, Scabiosa and PR Sepia. Noodler's Red Black, PR Copper Burst, Diamine Oxblood, Caran d'Ache Grand Canyon, Sailor Jentile Grenade and Apricot and R&K Solferino come to mind.
