Ballpoints reign supreme!

Also, on a side note, where's a good place to start with flex? I've been thinking of replacing my broken 2668 Esterbrook nib with a 2788 to start off with a tiny bit of flex.

(Waterman 12 1/2 BCHR ..... Sailor Jentle Sky High)

The problem with an image as a post is I can't reply to the one salient bit. It is the rarity, the scarcity, that increases the value, not the actual functionality of the nib. There are most certainly other pens/nibs that can do, writing-wise, what a Waterman Pink could do. Of course, that is a side issue from what their monetary value is on the open market. It is a collectible item, and as such, scarcity breeds higher values.

"When Men differ in Opinion, both Sides ought equally to have the Advantage of being heard by the Publick; and that when Truth and Error have fair Play, the former is always an overmatch for the latter."

~ Benjamin Franklin

I'd give my left...er.. acorn.

Anyway, it's not worth as much as this pen might go for...

As to the value on this pen, they were UN-common new, factory flex, and it's in awesome red ripple.... The colored bands also had a habit of vanishing, as they were made from casein. This one appears to be in tact.

It all ads up to big $$

Most writing done with flex nibs that I've seen looks bad due to inadequate training/skill, inconsistency. Even when it looks good, it's usually out of place and unnecessary in the usual work environment. And it takes more effort to get it to look good. I don't have any desire for really flexy nibs at this point.

Sorry but I felt the need to capture this for posterity. Is it a sign of the rebound of fountain pens???

I wondered what that thud I heard earlier was.....

It was Gclef fainting!'

If I remember a Pink was just slightly less flexy than an 'artists' nib, WatchArt may know IIRC he has a Waterman with an 'artists' nib.

That sure is a lot of money for any pen, but if it were my money I'd rather have that pen than a new MB 149, not that a 149 is a bad pen (it's a great pen!) it's a modern production line pen, and the Waterman is a example from the 'golden era' of fountain pens.

I hadn't thought of the pens I have purchased as being an investment in my financial future or how I will someday be able to afford that Swiss chalet I've had my eye on!

I heard that noise from Jersey too - but I don't think it was GClef fainting. On the other hand, he has been awfully quiet....perhaps contemplating the wisdom of his recent abandonment of flex fountain pens.

Breathe. Take one step at a time. Don't sweat the small stuff. You're not getting older, you are only moving through time. Be calm and positive.

You should've heard 2 thuds - 1 at $750, and another at $1,000.

Now, I'm REALLY trying to understand this guy.

The pen has been on my watch list since at least May, going back and forth on whether to make an offer or not. I had the same nib, but in a medium, and I thought this one looked more fine.

It was at $100 BIN for while, then yesterday, when it was re-listed for the umphteen time, he jacked the price to $150.

"I know! Since nobody bought it for $100, maybe somebody will buy it for $150!"?

The beauty of capitalism and the wonder of supply and demand! Perhaps this seller is engaging in an experiment in reverse psychology? Looks like a nice pen, though.

Are you sure it would be firm enough for you???

Dude, the gold medium Cadet "23" nib I had, was one of the softest ever. It didn't give a lot of variation, but it had a nice "cushiony" feel to it.

Unfortunately, it was a medium, so I gave it to someone as a gift.

He saw someone has been watching it since May and figured, with the holidays coming up, whoever it is will finally take the plunge...
