Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

As a longtime professional woodworker who has taught my craft to many students I would like to take exception to "a special touch". Yes, there is a range of talent people bring to a craft, but desire, patience and perseverance can compensate a great deal for initial lack of skill. Don't discard all you've purchased but, perhaps, take additional instruction or just keep at it with a reasonable level of expectation that you can elevate as time goes on.

Well I do have about 50 wood blanks for penturning. Maybe I will just give it another try. Thanks for the encouragement. Recently moved to Tenn, so I will have to look around for a penturning class nearby. It took me three blanks to finally get the pen I posted on FPN. :)

Don't quit!!! Woodturning is a job which needs a great skill... And skill is something you acquire with time and practice...

This is my last work (but I'll made much more)...

That is a beautiful pen. How long was the wait for you? I am considering one.

I waited just a few days under four months. Once it arrived to CFP and I paid it was in my hands two days later. The custom nib grind and shipping was insanely fast... Once it was in shop.

I have been practicing with my new Sailor 1911. Wine list hopefully for Christmas. Have omitted the quantities available as there are still a few weeks to go!

Apologies for rather poor photo - using a tablet.

Happy Thanksgiving to all FPN friends celebrating it today.

Haaaa, that is really drool-worthy. I see he did his Spencerian grind from Nakaya's 'soft fine' nib. They are both great looking and I am sure they write as well too.

I am going to Japan in December and January for 6 weeks so I will try holding a few Nakaya's in my hand in a few shops there, then will decide if I will want to go with the custom grind by John or buy one over there.

I agree with EBUCKTHORN and would encourage you to, not dismiss the idea of pen making at this point.

There is a funny thing I learn about creating, it is always hard! As you master a skill, you push the envelop, use harder materials, more complex designs, so it never gets easy, And despite all that is incredibility rewarding. I love doing it and always will.

It is very hard to judge your own work right after you made it, because you just did battle with it, because it might look a little different than you expected, it is very difficult to be objective. Trust what others to tell you about it. With a little time the objectivity returns and you will be able to enjoy it. I always look at what I could do different if I were to do it again and what I like and wouldn't change.

critique is important for improvement, I ask a kids what they think, they will give you a honest answer.

I have a ritual, to get in the mood, I make a cup of tee, and clean up my shop, sort material and fix little things, Usually this leads me into s session, If not my shop still benefits.

Good luck

M
